Puma Velocity Nitro 2 After 100 Miles: A No-Nonsense Daily Trainer That Holds Up

Six months and 100 miles in, the Puma Velocity Nitro 2 remains a consistent, durable workhorse daily trainer with almost no visible wear.

Introduction

Some shoes earn their keep by being exciting. The Puma Velocity Nitro 2 earns it by being dependable. After roughly 100 miles of running over six months, it is still doing exactly what it did on day one: serving as a no-nonsense workhorse daily trainer that disappears on foot and never complains.

This is a shoe bought and run in entirely independently, with no early access or outside influence on these impressions. What follows focuses on how the shoe has been used over those 100 miles, how the ride has changed (or has not), and how it is holding up in terms of wear and tear.

How It Has Been Used

From the start, this has been the everyday trainer, and that has not changed. The average run has been in the 8-to-10-mile range, which suits regular easy running, with some shorter efforts around 6 miles and some longer ones stretching into half-marathon distance. In other words, it has been used for the kind of running most people do most frequently.

That consistency of use matters for a long-term look like this one. A shoe that only gets rotated into short workouts ages very differently from one that absorbs easy mile after easy mile, and the Velocity Nitro 2 has taken the latter role without protest.

The Midsole and Ride Feel

The midsole pairs Puma’s Nitro foam as the top layer with an EVA foam layer underneath, and together they work really well. A useful comparison is the Puma Liberate, an all-Nitro shoe from the previous year. The Liberate felt squishy, responsive, and exciting, but that full-Nitro setup tended to bottom out a little on regular to longer easy runs, confining it to shorter, faster days.

The full-length EVA layer in the Velocity Nitro 2 insulates the Nitro foam from the road, so it does not bottom out. Add the thick PumaGrip outsole rubber and you get a ride that is slightly dampened in terms of raw foam feel, but delivers that classic workhorse character: almost borderline boring and consistent, with feet feeling great at the end of the run. You just put in your miles and the shoe does not complain for a second.

One genuinely unusual trait is how low-cut this shoe is. Along the sides of the ankles it feels really low, which is worth a look for anyone who gets rubbing on the sides of the ankles in other shoes.

Durability After 100 Miles

Like any good workhorse daily trainer, this shoe has shown remarkable consistency and durability. Aside from some discoloration from a fair number of trail runs, it shows almost no wear at all. The rubber outsole looks pretty much brand new, with nearly zero wear.

Part of that longevity comes from roughly 30 to 40 of those 100 miles landing on softer surfaces rather than straight blacktop or concrete, but the durability is still impressive. The PumaGrip outsole has also added versatility: plenty of running on dirt roads and light trails, and it handled it all perfectly fine. The one caveat is that the low-cut ankles can be a slight issue on some trails, depending on how technical they get.

The foam feels incredibly fresh at the 100-mile mark. It is normal for a shoe not to degrade dramatically between mile 1 and 100, but you can usually tell the difference between a fresh pair and a 100-mile pair. Here the ride feels like the exact same shoe, mile 1 to mile 100, which is genuinely remarkable.

Upper and Fit

The upper still feels great and still fits great after 100 miles, holding up exceptionally well for a daily trainer. There is arguably a little too much padding for a daily trainer, particularly in the padded tongue, and the puffy laces are not a favorite.

Beyond those minor gripes, the upper is comfortable and durable, and the low-cut ankle fit remains one of the shoe’s more distinctive features. As workhorse daily trainers go, there really are no meaningful weaknesses in this shoe.

Buying Advice

If you want a no-nonsense workhorse daily trainer with more rubber coverage on the outsole and extra durability, the Velocity Nitro 2 deserves a close look. It is a strong candidate for a personal top five among daily trainers of the year. Runners who mostly do easy miles, occasionally stray onto dirt or light trails, and value consistency over flash will get the most from it. Those chasing a lively, max-cushioned race-day feel should look elsewhere, but that is not what this shoe is trying to be.

Conclusion

After 100 miles and six months, the Puma Velocity Nitro 2 has proven itself a consistent, durable, quietly excellent daily trainer. The layered midsole protects the Nitro foam from bottoming out, the PumaGrip outsole barely shows wear, and the ride stays identical from the first mile to the hundredth. If your priority is a shoe that simply works, run after run, this one is easy to recommend.
