Fountain Pens
Pininfarina Novanta Limited Edition Fountain Pen Review: Sculptural Design Meets Everyday Writing
A sleek, curvy metal fountain pen with a magnetic cap, 14k gold nib, and a clever removable nib unit. Here is what works and what does not.
Introduction
Some fountain pens arrive with a familiar silhouette: a black cigar-shaped body with gold trim. The Pininfarina Novanta Limited Edition is not that pen. It is round, curvy, all metal, and unmistakably designed by a company known for automotive styling. It looks different, and after spending time with it, the design genuinely grows on you.
The regular Novanta retails for 322 euros, while this Limited Edition sits at 652 euros. The difference comes down to the limited production run and the 14 karat gold nib, though it is fair to question whether the nib alone justifies the premium. Either way, this is not a budget purchase, and it is worth understanding exactly what you get before committing.
Unboxing and Presentation
Pininfarina clearly put thought into the presentation. A cardboard outer sleeve slides off to reveal a heavy wooden-feeling box with a magnetic closure. The interior is lined with velvet, and the pen sits in a solid, fixed bed underneath a velvet slip. It feels luxurious without overdoing it.
Inside you also get two cartridges, a converter, and paperwork on textured paper that feels genuinely premium, including a printed quote about proportions. Everything is laid out cleanly, and the packaging matches the price point.

Design and Details
The Novanta is a beefy pen. It is both long and girthy, noticeably larger than something like a Pilot Metropolitan. The body is all metal, likely aluminum, with beautifully beveled edges on the finial and barrel. A distinctive groove runs along the body, a design cue Pininfarina uses often, and it gives the pen a sleek, modern look.
The most interesting element is the clip. The Pininfarina logo sits on a deep, reflective blue panel, and that same piece doubles as a spring-activated clip. It is an unusual, clever detail, though because it sits fairly low on the barrel, the pen sticks out of a pocket a bit more than most.

One thing to flag honestly: the ridge on top of the section, the area some describe as a battleship bridge, is slightly sharp. It never cut or hurt during use, but there is no way to position your fingers without feeling it. Writers with smaller or particularly large hands may notice it more. Ideally, try this pen in person before buying, since it is not a brand you will find in every brick-and-mortar store.
Filling System and Cleaning
The magnetic cap is a lot of fun to use. It snaps off and back on with a satisfying feel, and the cap itself has an interesting sculpted shape.
The standout engineering trick is the nib unit. The section end unscrews, and the entire nib assembly can be pulled out through the front of the pen and dipped directly into ink. Because the clip ring piece also unscrews, you avoid getting ink trapped behind the clip and in the nooks and crannies of the body. Ink can still collect behind the sharp ridge, but overall the design makes cleaning noticeably easier than a conventional pen. When everything is screwed back together, the clip and nib line up neatly, which is a satisfying detail.

The converter screws in, and the barrel also unscrews for traditional filling. It is slightly puzzling why the barrel needs to unscrew at all given the front-access design, but it adds flexibility without hurting anything.
Writing Performance
The Limited Edition ships with a 14k gold medium nib, engraved with the Pininfarina logo, 14k 585 gold content marks, and the medium designation, all machine engraved rather than laser engraved. The plastic feed resembles a JoWo design, and this unit carries the number 48048.
Writing is smooth. The nib sits on the finer end of the medium spectrum, though nib sizing varies between brands. The feed keeps up well without oversaturating, and the flow is well tuned: not too wet, not too dry, even with a slightly drier ink like Delft’s Blauw from Akkerman.

The nib is round, so do not expect dramatic line variation, and it is certainly not a flex nib. Still, you can coax out a modest amount of line variation to add character to your writing if you apply gentle pressure. Reverse writing is a weak point: the nib runs dry quickly and turns scratchy, so expect at most a word or two upside down.
Posting is possible, but the pen becomes long and somewhat unwieldy, and the sharp bit sits where your fingers land. Most writers will probably leave the cap off entirely, which is no loss given the comfortable unposted balance.
Things to Consider Before Buying
The price is the most obvious consideration. At 652 euros this is not an affordable pen, and while the gold nib and limited run give it some justification, the regular model at 322 euros offers the same core design for considerably less. If you like the look but not the premium trim, the standard version is the sensible alternative.
The second consideration is the ridge on the section. For some hands it is a non-issue; for others it will be a constant presence. Combined with limited retail availability, handling the pen before purchase is genuinely worthwhile.
On the plus side, the pen feels robust, has a strong gadget factor with the magnetic cap and removable nib unit, and looks genuinely innovative in a market full of same-shaped pens. It is fun, well thought through, and a surprisingly nice writer despite the unconventional looks.
Conclusion
The Pininfarina Novanta Limited Edition is a pen of contrasts. It costs a lot, and the premium over the regular model is hard to fully justify on paper. Yet the design originality, build quality, magnetic cap, and clever cleaning-friendly nib unit make it a genuinely interesting piece that grew from skepticism into appreciation over time.
If you value innovation and want a fountain pen that looks like nothing else on your desk, the Novanta delivers. If budget matters more, the regular version keeps the design at a friendlier price.
