PenBBS 500 Fountain Pen Review: Beautiful Acrylic, Vacuum Fill, Honest Price
A Chinese-made fountain pen with gorgeous acrylic, a smooth writing feel, and a vacuum filling system, all at a surprisingly low price.
Introduction
The PenBBS 500 is a fountain pen from a Chinese brand with an unusual origin story. PenBBS grew out of a domestic fountain pen enthusiast forum in China, where the owner created an original pen simply because he wanted one. The response was strong enough that the design went into production, and the brand took off from there.
What makes PenBBS interesting is that its products keep evolving in response to feedback from the fountain pen community. Combined with low prices and genuinely well-designed acrylic finishes, that also means popular models can disappear from sale without warning. If a pen catches your eye, it is worth checking availability sooner rather than later.
First Impressions and Design
The 500 arrives in a simple black and red box with a magnetic lid, alongside a soft pen sleeve whose pattern varies by unit. Inside you also find multilingual instructions in Japanese, English, and Chinese. The pen itself is a translucent acrylic that looks genuinely beautiful in person.

My unit is one of five colors in the series, which at the time included Purple Cloud, South Show, Fairyland, Galaxy, and Tiny Happiness. Because the acrylic patterns vary from pen to pen, no two are identical, which gives the 500 a one-of-a-kind feel. The cap ring is engraved with the model name, and the clip has a distinctive, almost animal-like shape: fairly thick and pleasantly soft. The cap operates on a threaded mechanism that opens and closes smoothly, without any scratchy feeling in the acrylic. The grip section also carries an engraved ring, and the nib is available in EF, F, and M; my review unit is the F.
Specs are compact and light: 145mm in total length, 31g in weight, with a 14mm grip section. The balance sits toward the cap end, giving it a slightly high center of gravity.
Writing Experience
Out of the box, the 500 writes beautifully. The nib is on the softer side with a pleasant give, and ink flows generously from the very first stroke. It is not an overly wet, slippery feel, but the line is noticeably wetter than a typical F nib, which may divide opinion depending on your preference.

In terms of smoothness, it reminded me of the Pilot Custom 742, which is high praise at this price. Japanese text is very easy to write with this pen. Part of the comfort comes from the grip: it tapers from about 10mm at the base to 9mm near the nib, with a small step where your fingers naturally catch. It is genuinely comfortable to hold for longer writing sessions.
How the Vacuum Filler Works
Here is the most important practical detail: the PenBBS 500 does not accept ink cartridges, and converters do not fit either. It is a vacuum-style filler, so you draw ink directly from a bottle into the barrel itself.
The process is straightforward once you know the steps. Unscrew the blind cap at the rear of the barrel to expose the plunger, pull the plunger rod out, then close it again clockwise. Press the plunger all the way down, and as you release the pressure, the pen draws ink up into the barrel. Repeat this once or twice to fill fully, then screw the blind cap back down until it seats flush into the barrel.

Once you are used to it, filling takes seconds, and a full barrel of ink lasts a long time.
Things to Consider Before Buying
A couple of quirks are worth knowing about before you order. First, the clip. It is thick and protrudes noticeably, so sliding the pen into a pocket or case tends to leave marks. Angling the pen can help, but the clip is my least favorite part of an otherwise well-considered design.
Second, the cap cannot be posted on the back of the barrel. Forcing it produces an alarming amount of resistance, so it is best left unposted. That said, even without posting, the pen measures 112mm from nib to barrel end, so the balance remains comfortable for most hand sizes.

Buying Advice
The price is the part that seals the deal. At 4,620 yen including tax, a pen with this quality of acrylic finish, this writing feel, and a vacuum filling system is remarkable value. Domestic Japanese pens with acrylic this attractive cost considerably more, and even the growing field of affordable domestic vacuum fillers does not quite reach this combination of price and quality.
For anyone who has hesitated over Chinese-made fountain pens, the PenBBS 500 is a strong argument to reconsider. It is a thoughtfully designed pen from a brand that keeps iterating, and I am genuinely curious what it releases next.
Conclusion
The PenBBS 500 pairs a gorgeous, unique acrylic body with a smooth, softly sprung nib and a satisfying vacuum filling system, all for under 5,000 yen. The protruding clip and inability to post the cap are minor trade-offs, but they do little to diminish what is one of the best value propositions in fountain pens right now.
