A deep dive into a high-end desktop build pairing the ASUS RTX 5090 Astral OC with the AMD Ryzen 9950X3D, and how it compares to the 9800X3D.
Introduction
For those who can navigate the current landscape of product availability, pricing, and the occasional scalper markup, there is a summit of supreme performance in the consumer desktop world. This build pairs the AMD Ryzen 9950X3D with the Nvidia RTX 5090 Astral from ASUS to create a machine capable of both gaming and video editing at the highest spec currently available. The goal is to see how this combination performs, and how it stacks up against the more budget-friendly Ryzen 9800X3D.
The Build at a Glance
The parts list for this build is substantial. The centerpiece is the Ryzen 9950X3D, a processor with 16 cores and 32 threads, a base clock of 4.3 GHz, and a boost clock up to 5.7 GHz. This doubles the core and thread count of the 9800X3D. The motherboard is the ROG Crosshair X870E Hero, a massive, monotone monolith that looks stealthy and classy with the lighting off. It is worth noting that an X670 motherboard would also work with this processor; an X870 is not a strict requirement.

Memory comes from Corsair, with a 96 GB DDR5 kit across two sticks running at 6000 CL30. The platform supports up to 192 GB, so there is room to expand later. Storage is handled by a handful of M.2 drives from Crucial, including a 2 TB Gen 5 system drive and a pair of 4 TB Gen 5 drives for editing and games. Powering everything is a ROG Strix 1200 W Platinum unit, chosen for the 5090’s known power appetite and to provide plenty of overhead.
The Graphics Card: ASUS RTX 5090 Astral OC
The ASUS RTX 5090 Astral OC is, without a doubt, the biggest and heaviest GPU seen in this build. It measures 358 mm or 14.1 inches in length and weighs almost 7 lb. The card’s housing itself measures 353 mm, which allows it to fit in cases with a 355 mm limit, just barely. The card demands a GPU support bracket, which is included in the box alongside a ruler, a challenge coin, and a right shift key cap that is a mini version of the GPU with movable fans.

This card retails for $3,360 US. It is an incredible piece of hardware, but it is a significant investment. The card also features a warning light near the power connector that indicates if something is off and needs to be reseated. When paired with ASUS GPU Tweak, the software shows a diagram of the 12-pin connector, displaying the current loads for each line.
The Processor: AMD Ryzen 9950X3D
The Ryzen 9950X3D has 16 cores, but only eight of them have the same 3D V-Cache as the 9800X3D. Traditionally, getting games to hook to the correct cores has been finicky, requiring BIOS tweaks, Windows reinstalls, or process lasso. In this build, none of that was necessary. The processor handled gaming without manual intervention, though a few games like Call of Duty, Far Cry 6, and Cyberpunk may need a manual tweak at lower resolutions and detail levels. At 4K ultra settings, there was no difference at all.

For gaming, there is no advantage to spending the extra money on the 9950X3D over the 9800X3D. The extra cores are there for productivity and rendering work. In Puget Bench, the 9950X3D scored 12,414 in Photoshop against 12,189 for the 9800X3D. In Premiere, the spread was larger at 17,413 versus 15,536. In Da Vinci Resolve, the scores were 14,514 versus 12,913. However, in a real-world render test of an 11-minute video project, the 9950X3D finished in 3 minutes and 54 seconds, while the 9800X3D finished in 3 minutes and 58 seconds, a negligible difference for many workflows.
The Case and Cooling
The case chosen for this build is the Antec Flux SE, a variant with solid sound-dampened side panels on both sides instead of a glass panel. It accommodates GPUs up to 408 mm, leaving plenty of room for a front radiator if needed. The case includes a 140 mm rear exhaust fan, a reverse 120 mm lower intake fan, and three 120 mm fans up front, plus a powered five-slot PWM fan hub. The build was run purely air-cooled, using a Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 5 air cooler and 140 mm Be Quiet Silent Wings Pro 4 fans.

Temperatures were impressive. After stress testing the CPU for 30 minutes, the max was 77.4 C with an average of 73.3 C. Stress testing the entire system for an hour saw the CPU hit a max of just under 88 C, and the GPU never broke 66 C. The build is manageable on air, but it is loud. At idle, the room is just over 40 dB. The machine spools up in two stages, reaching 48 dB and then about 53 dB in full load. As an editing machine, this is acceptable, but as a gaming machine, it is loud enough to make open-back headphones unusable. This build would be a great candidate for water cooling, not for temperatures, but for noise.
Overall Buying Advice
All in, this build would run about $6,600 plus tax. For the majority of people who are primarily gamers and content creators, the 9800X3D will serve just fine, especially when paired with a high-end GPU. The 9950X3D offers better performance in some productivity workloads, but the real-world difference is often small. As for the GPU, a 5070 Ti or RX 970 XT card is great for 1440p, the 5080 is solid for 4K, and the 90 series is for when money is not a concern or when you absolutely have to have the best of the best.
Conclusion
This build represents what peak performance currently looks like in a consumer desktop. The ASUS RTX 5090 Astral OC is a beast, and the Ryzen 9950X3D offers strong productivity performance without sacrificing gaming. The Antec Flux SE case is a solid choice, offering good airflow and plenty of room for large components. For those with the budget and the patience, this is a machine that can handle anything thrown at it.
