Otto Hutt Design 06 Review: A German Fountain Pen with a Superb Steel Nib
A Bauhaus-inspired metal fountain pen from Germany with an exceptionally smooth steel nib, secure posting, and one significant carry quirk to weigh before buying.
Introduction
Otto Hutt is a German pen maker that has been around since 1920, and its current lineup follows a clear naming scheme: every pen is called a Design followed by a number. The Design 06 reviewed here is described by the brand as “a renowned original meets innovation,” and much of the range leans on Bauhaus-inspired styling. This one comes in lilac, a finish that reads almost off-white at first glance but reveals a soft purple tint the longer you look at it.
The pen is priced at 148 euros and 76 cents with the steel nib. If you want the 18 karat gold nib instead, available in the same extra fine through broad range, the upgrade adds 115 euros and 70 cents. After spending time with the steel version, we suspect most buyers will not miss the gold.
What’s in the Box
Packaging is more considered than most. You get a cardboard outer sleeve, then a remarkably sturdy inner box that is genuinely hard to compress. Inside, the pen sits in a small protective sleeve alongside a placeholder cartridge, a converter, a polishing cloth, a filling instruction booklet, and a warranty card.

The complete package is a small but telling detail. The polishing cloth in particular is a modest inclusion, but it shows real care has gone into how the pen arrives with its new owner. Everything you need to start writing is included from day one.
Design and Build
The Design 06 is an all-metal pen, and it shows. It has a solid, substantial feel in hand that immediately separates it from lighter resin pens at similar sizes. The shape brings to mind Waterman pens like the Hemisphere, though with more girth, which addresses the main complaint many larger-handed writers have with that thinner silhouette.
The top finial carries the Otto Hutt logo, and the cap tapers down nicely to meet a fairly girthy barrel that narrows to a refined point finished with a polished end cap. The clip is spring-loaded, a design we always appreciate because spring mechanisms tend to resist bending under normal use. The center band carries the Otto Hutt name with “Germany” on the reverse.
At 13.6 cm, the pen sits a little longer and slightly thicker than a Pilot Metropolitan, so it should feel familiar and comfortable for most writers.
How It Writes
The steel nib looks like a size 5, finished in two-tone, with a refined section that tapers down and flares out toward a plastic feed. This unit shipped with a cartridge of Otto Hutt’s own blue ink, though a converter is included for bottled ink.
The headline here is the nib quality. This is an exceptionally smooth steel nib, on the level of the best steel nibs from established German manufacturers. Even the relatively inexpensive nib option in the range writes this well, which is genuinely impressive. It is beautifully adjusted: neither too wet nor too dry, with a nice rich flow that never gushes. With very careful pressure you can even coax out a touch of line variation, though this is not a flex nib.

One limitation to note: the pen struggles with reverse writing, where the line fades in and out and dries out quickly. If fine-tuning your handwriting angles matters to you, keep that in mind. For everyday forward writing, though, the experience is delightful.
What We Like
The metal construction gives the pen a very solid feel in hand, and the secure posting adds even more heft for those who prefer a longer instrument. Posted, it forms a comfortable full-size pen with a pleasing weight balance, though be aware that posting does make it fairly top-heavy.
The spring-loaded clip deserves another mention. Operated the way it should be, it feels sturdy and well designed, and it should not bend out of shape with normal use. The overall design language, with its clean tapered lines, feels modern without being sterile.

And then there is the nib again. At this quality of steel, the gold upgrade feels unnecessary. The complete accessory package, from converter to cloth, rounds out a purchase that feels finished rather than stripped down.
Things to Consider Before Buying
The section is quite small. For writers with larger hands or thicker fingers, the grip area can feel narrow and relatively thin, even though the secure posting compensates somewhat. Your mileage will vary depending on hand size, but it is worth flagging.
The bigger issue is how the pen uncaps. It takes only half a turn, which means the lightest brush against the cap can pop it loose. Depending on how you carry pens, this matters a lot.

We would not pocket-carry this pen in trousers, and we would hesitate before sliding it into a dress shirt, where a loose cap could mean ink everywhere. If you use pen cases, this is largely a non-issue, and many owners will never encounter the problem. But if the cap worked loose inside a bag or case, it would not surprise us. This is the single most significant trade-off of the Design 06.
Buying Advice
The price question is subjective. At roughly 150 euros with a steel nib, some buyers will find it steep, while others will consider it fair for a metal pen with a nib this refined. Given how well it writes, we lean toward the latter.
If you carry pens in cases and want a solid, beautifully finished German pen with a superb smooth steel nib, the Design 06 in lilac is an easy recommendation. If you pocket-carry your pens, the half-turn cap is a real risk worth weighing carefully. And if you do decide to buy, it is worth checking for any available discounts before checkout, since a 10 percent saving softens the price nicely.
Conclusion
The Otto Hutt Design 06 delivers where it counts: solid metal construction, a genuinely exceptional steel nib, secure posting, and a thoughtful complete package. Its quirks are real but manageable, chiefly the small section and the ultra-loose half-turn cap. For case-carrying fountain pen users who value writing quality above all, this lilac Design 06 is a lovely pen to live with.
