On Running Cloudmonster Hyper Lightspray: First Look at a Lighter, Better-Fitting Cloudmonster
Early miles in the Cloudmonster Hyper Lightspray reveal a lighter Lightspray upper, improved lockdown, and the same resilient Helion HF midsole ride.
Introduction
The Cloudmonster line has long been a favorite for runners who want a max-cushion daily trainer with genuine bounce. The new On Running Cloudmonster Hyper Lightspray takes that familiar formula and trims it down in one key area: the upper. Early miles suggest this is a lighter, better-fitting take on a shoe many runners already enjoyed.
What Makes the Lightspray Upper Different
The defining feature is the Lightspray upper itself. Rather than a traditional stitched and glued construction, the upper is jet-sprayed as TPU material directly onto a last, then attached straight to the midsole without glue. The result is an upper that weighs roughly an ounce and a half less than the traditional version.
That weight saving is noticeable, and the fit is dialed in. The upper has a way of sucking your foot down onto the midsole and holding it there, with strong lockdown through the midfoot and forefoot. Compared with the previous version, it is also easier to slide your foot into, which was a common complaint on older Lightspray designs.

Fit and Sizing
Sizing seems to follow one clear rule: stay with your regular size. A tester who dropped half a size down experienced some pressure over the top of the foot, while those who kept their usual size reported no issues at all. In the regular size, the lockdown was excellent with zero heel lift.

One fit note worth knowing: a small amount of space in the heel carried over from the standard Cloudmonster Hyper 3, but it did not translate into heel lift on the run.
Midsole and Ride
Underfoot, the midsole is essentially the same as the Hyper 3, with one minor change: there is no traditional insole inside the shoe. On has raised the platform by close to 2 mm of extra stack to even things out, so the ride feels continuous rather than hollow.
The foam blend pairs Helion HF foam on top with a denser EVA layer at the bottom. Compared with the previous version’s forefoot puck, this is a much better setup: resilient, bouncy, and stable thanks to the firmer EVA base.

Things to Consider Before Buying
This is still an early impression after limited miles, so a full verdict will come with more time in the shoe. A few things to weigh:
- The upper does change the feel slightly, and the initial pressure some testers felt over the top of the foot may loosen up with wear.
- The heel fit quirk from the Hyper 3 carries over, though it did not cause heel lift.
- If you loved the Hyper 3, this is effectively the same ride in a lighter, more locked-down package.
Buying Advice
If you are deciding between the regular Cloudmonster Hyper 3 and this Lightspray version, the choice comes down to whether you value the lighter upper and improved fit. The midsole ride is largely the same, so this upgrade is about weight and lockdown rather than a new underfoot feel. Runners who found previous versions hard to slide into will appreciate the easier entry.

Conclusion
Early miles in the Cloudmonster Hyper Lightspray point to a winning combination: a lighter shoe, a better-fitting upper, and the same bouncy, stable ride that made the Hyper 3 enjoyable. It is already shaping up as one of the most compelling On releases of the year, and it is well worth a look if max-cushion daily trainers are your thing.
