On Cloudsurfer 6 First Run Review: Firm, Fast, and a Tricky Fit

The On Cloudsurfer 6 blends training shoe comfort with racing flat speed, but a firm ride and a snug toe box split opinion on first runs.

Introduction

The On Cloudsurfer 6 is the sixth generation of On’s do-almost-everything road shoe, positioned as a model that combines training shoe comfort with racing flat speed. On pitches it for everything from 5K to the marathon, covering both daily training and race day. We put in first runs at easy pace and with some faster intervals to see how that promise holds up out of the box.

Specs and Design at a Glance

The Cloudsurfer 6 costs 135 pounds or 149.99 US dollars and weighs 323 grams (11.4 ounces) for a men’s size 8, with a 6mm drop. On says the shoe pairs its Speedboard with a moderate level of firm midsole cushioning for a responsive ride, alongside CloudTec technology in the outsole.

The upper is a flexible engineered mesh that uses a good amount of recycled materials, with sensible ventilation for breathability. The most unusual design choice is a thick wraparound tongue that opens on the outer side of the shoe rather than sitting in a traditional layout.

Fit and Comfort Notes

Fit is the one area where our testers genuinely disagreed. One tester found the shoe true to size in a UK 8, feeling a little snug for the first couple of kilometers before easing up, and expected it to loosen further as the mesh breaks in.

The other tester, who normally runs in UK 8 across all On shoes, found the toe box distinctly tight, with a big toe pressing against the front on both sides, a sensation that persisted throughout the run. Their conclusion: go up half a size, which has not been necessary with other On models. Neither tester was fully convinced by the structured wraparound tongue, preferring something more traditional. Heel collar padding was comfortable.

How It Feels on the Run

On the run, the defining characteristic is firmness. One tester described a very hard feel straight out of the box, softening slightly once on foot, and a firm-but-cushioned ride that stayed comfortable over a five-mile run with no fit or comfort issues. At daily training pace they felt fine rather than impressive, though On shoes are known to soften after a few wears.

At faster paces the firmness works in the shoe’s favor. During interval efforts there was a clear sense of responsiveness, a feeling that you can run faster in them. That matches On’s positioning of the Cloudsurfer 6 as a tempo, fartlek, and racing shoe.

A second tester, running an easy 10K, found the same firmness less forgiving, calling the ride taxing on the legs at a comfortable pace, with the cushioning engaging more noticeably on flatter and downhill sections where the ride felt more enjoyable and bouncy.

What It Does Well and Where It Falls Short

The Cloudsurfer 6’s strongest card is versatility. It is comfortable enough for daily miles while offering enough responsiveness for faster training sessions. Our testers agreed it would work for faster training, and while neither would choose it over dedicated super shoes for a race, one noted it is certainly not a shoe you couldn’t race in.

The compromises are the firm ride, which testers who prefer softer cushioning found tough going even at easy paces, and the toe box fit, which may push some runners up half a size. It is also worth noting that On’s own lineup offers better cushioned alternatives at this price, and in some cases for less.

Should You Buy the Cloudsurfer 6?

If you want one shoe that handles tempo runs, fartlek sessions, and everyday mileage, and you like a firmer, more responsive feel underfoot, the Cloudsurfer 6 makes a solid case. Try it on before buying, and consider a half size up if you have wider feet or a sensitive big toe.

If maximum cushioning is your priority, On’s collection has softer options, and some alternatives at this price point deliver a plusher ride. As a first impression, the Cloudsurfer 6 lands as a capable, enjoyable shoe with room to improve as the midsole and upper break in.

Conclusion

The On Cloudsurfer 6 is a versatile trainer-racer hybrid with a responsive firm ride, a comfortable recycled mesh upper, and a fit that rewards trying before you buy. It may not win over runners who love soft cushioning, but for faster training days it shows real promise.
