On Cloudmonster Hyper Road Ultra Race Test: Secretly an Ultra Racer?
After 55 miles at the Comrades Marathon, the Cloudmonster Hyper proved far better at long, steady road ultras than it ever did as a daily super trainer.
Introduction
The On Cloudmonster Hyper didn’t exactly win us over as a daily super trainer. It was criticized for its price and for failing to deliver the punchy performance you’d expect from a shoe in that category. But there was always a hunch that it might have a second life: as a long, steady road ultra shoe.
That hunch got a proper test at the Comrades Marathon, a roughly 55-mile road ultra with a long climb out of the start, big descents, and long stretches of unforgiving freeway asphalt. After around 8 hours and 50 minutes of moving, mostly at a 9 to 10 minute mile pace, the Cloudmonster Hyper turned out to be exactly the kind of shoe this distance rewards.
Why the Cloudmonster Hyper Was an Odd Choice
On paper, a max-cushioned super trainer at this price shouldn’t be the obvious pick for a 55-mile day. Plenty of runners would reach for alternatives such as the Novablast 4, Superblast, or Endorphin Speed 4, shoes that also handle long road distances and generally cost less.

Yet the race is the real test, and the Comrades Marathon is a brutal one. It demands intelligent pacing, big climbing, steep descents, and hours of consistent footfall on hard tarmac. That combination exposes any weakness in a shoe quickly.
Cushioning That Tames the Road Without Feeling Sinky
The first thing that worked was sheer cushioned comfort and road protection without excessive weight. This is a comparatively light shoe for its general heft, and that mattered most in the final hours of the race. When landing with good form, the heel wedge offered some energy return, but in a controlled way that some other max-cushion shoes don’t manage.

Even when fatigue set in and form degraded to heel-heavy landings, the regular CloudTec elements provided enough protection to keep feet comfortable. The cushioning strikes a balance: it tames the road without feeling soft and sinky at slower paces.
Surprisingly, the final four miles were the fastest of the race. Pushing up to around 8 minute miles, the shoe still had just enough pop to offer gears when it mattered.
A High-Volume Toe Box That Prevents Toe Bashing
The second standout was the spacious, high-volume toe box. On steep descents, the length clearance across the top of the toe box meant absolutely no toe bashing, and there was not a single sign of black toenails after the race.

That’s a bigger deal than it sounds. Toe bashing is a common problem in ultras, especially in shoes with a more compact or tighter fit. Here, the extra room removed one of the usual sources of late-race misery entirely.
Race Test Verdict
As a daily trainer, it’s still hard to justify the price. But for a day-long ultra on the road, the shoe gave everything that was asked of it. The best shoe is the one you forget you’re wearing, and that’s exactly what happened over this race: comfort, energy, and protection in the right balance, mile after mile.
It wasn’t labored on the ups, it wasn’t toe bashing on the downs, and with the finish line and a back-to-back medal in sight, it had just enough spring to push on and break nine hours. The strongest endorsement available: it’s now a serious candidate for a future 100-mile road ultra, a race it wasn’t even on the radar for a few months ago.

Conclusion
The Cloudmonster Hyper may have missed as a daily super trainer, but as a long, steady road ultra shoe it found its true calling. If you’re moving at ultra paces and want cushioned comfort, protection, and a forgiving fit over very long distances, it deserves a spot on your short list, even if the price still stings for everyday use.
