On Cloudmonster 3 First Run Review: A Classic On Daily Trainer
The Cloudmonster 3 sticks to On's traditional CloudTec formula with a firmer, snappy ride and a roomy fit. Here's what the first runs revealed.
Introduction
The On Cloudmonster 3 is a daily trainer from On and one of the more traditional shoes in the brand’s range, leaning heavily on the CloudTec cushioning that has defined the company since day one. Despite the name, this is not a maxed-out cushioning monster. It is a mid-level cushioning daily trainer with a classic On character: firmer than most of the market, snappy off the ground, and styled well enough to wear well beyond your runs.
It is also a fairly expensive shoe, priced at £180 in the UK and $190 in the US, so it is worth understanding exactly what you are getting before committing. We have logged the first runs to give you a clear early picture of the fit, the ride, and who this shoe genuinely suits.
Specs and Design
In a UK size 9, which is a US 9.5, the Cloudmonster 3 weighs 304 g or 10.7 oz. You get 35 mm of cushioning at the heel and 29 mm at the forefoot, for a 6 mm drop.
The design is classic On throughout. The upper is a simple, fuss-free knit with a bit of cushioning around the back and some internal structure to add stability at the heel. The midsole uses dual-density Helion foam topped with a triple layer of On’s CloudTec cushioning, the distinctive pods that have been part of the brand’s identity from the start. A compressed rubber outsole covers almost all of the pods, and it is a fairly thick layer of rubber, which points to good durability over the long term.
Who the On Cloudmonster 3 Is For
This is the shoe for runners who have always liked the traditional On feel and are craving it again. On’s range has diversified in recent years, with softer and bouncier designs like the Cloudsurfer and PEBA foam models such as the Cloudmonster 3 Hyper, but the Cloudmonster 3 keeps the classic podded formula that is increasingly rare in the lineup. It is also a genuinely good-looking shoe that works as a lifestyle option you can run in, which adds real value at this price.

If you expect a big, pillowy, max-cushion midsole, this is not the shoe for that. But if you want a firmish, naturally stable daily trainer with a distinctive character, it fits the brief.
Fit and Sizing
The fit is roomy, and true to size is the sensible recommendation. In a normal On size, there is a very roomy forefoot with plenty of length and good clearance for toes to splay. The upper holds the foot securely without feeling restrictive, with no slipping and a nice airy feel.
There are some quirks. The tongue is deeply padded but does not pull back when you step in, so the final push of your foot into the shoe feels a bit less natural than it should, and the laces can slip off the top of the low-cut tongue if you do not push it forward. The heel collar is medium to amply padded and comfortable, though not the most secure or held-in heel out there. Step-in comfort is genuinely good, and the first run produced no irritation or hot spots anywhere.
Main Strengths
The best things about the Cloudmonster 3 are its fit and its roll. Step-in comfort is excellent, the roomy interior makes it an easy shoe to live in, and the modified rocker is improved over the previous version, rolling through foot strike more nicely and helping you clip along at easy pace with real efficiency.
On tired legs, that rocker and firm, immediate response made easy miles feel surprisingly manageable. The shoe rewards a smooth, rolling stride rather than a sink-and-spring one, and the thick rubber outsole should hold up well over high mileage.

It also looks good. This is a shoe you can comfortably wear outside of training, which makes the high price easier to justify for some runners.
Things to Consider Before Buying
Weight is the biggest concern. At 304 g for the stack height on offer, it is heavy compared with rivals; similarly cushioned shoes can come in around 230 g with more responsive foams. The firm ride will also not suit everyone, and it leans towards being a little less comfortable than ideal for pure easy or recovery runs, even if it is fine for general daily training.

The extra layer of CloudTec elements did not make the shoe noticeably softer than past generations, and the CloudTec pods do not deliver much energy return compared with modern PEBA or TPU midsoles. The speedboard plate on top adds stiffness through the roll, so the shoe relies on its rocker for efficiency. None of this is fatal if you like a firm, snappy shoe, but buyers expecting plush cushioning will be disappointed.
Buying Advice
If you are a fan of the old Cloudmonster, you are getting a very similar experience here with a slightly better rocker, and that is likely the strongest reason to buy. If you want big pillowy cushioning, look elsewhere in On’s range, where softer, livelier options now exist.

The Cloudmonster 3 makes most sense as an everyday shoe for easy, efficient miles with a firm, immediate ride, worn by someone who values On’s classic feel and its lifestyle-friendly design. Long-run comfort and durability on hard pavement are still open questions that more testing will answer.
Conclusion
The Cloudmonster 3 is very much a classic On experience. It is well made, easy to fit, good-looking, and rolls along efficiently, but it is heavy for its stack height, firmer than the modern daily trainer norm, and short on energy return. Loyal fans of the podded On ride will be happy; everyone else should weigh the alternatives carefully before spending on this one.
