On Cloudmonster 2 vs Cloudmonster 3: Which Max-Cushion Trainer Fits You Better
Two very different versions of On's most cushioned daily trainer. Here is how the bouncy Cloudmonster 2 and the firmer, rockered Cloudmonster 3 compare for running and walking.
Introduction
The Cloudmonster has long been one of the most popular shoes in On’s lineup, both with runners and with people who spend their days walking or standing. This comparison looks at the Cloudmonster 2 and the Cloudmonster 3, and the headline is simple: despite the minor version bump, these are two very different shoes. Understanding where each one excels makes the choice much easier.
Specs and Midsole Feel
In a men’s size 10, the Cloudmonster 2 weighs about 10.6 oz (300 g) and the Cloudmonster 3 comes in at 302 g (10.7 oz), so weight is essentially a wash. Stack heights are also close: 39 mm heel / 33 mm forefoot with a 6 mm drop for version 2, and 40 mm heel / 34 mm forefoot with the same 6 mm drop for version 3. Both use On’s Helion foam and CloudTec, an EVA-based cushioning system.
The structural difference is in the clouds themselves: version 2 uses a dual-layer midsole while version 3 adds a triple layer, bringing more clouds and more holes. That does not make it lighter, and it does not make it softer. In practice, the Cloudmonster 3 is firmer, while the Cloudmonster 2 is the more responsive shoe.

Ride Character and Running Feel
The Cloudmonster 2 is firm but bouncy, with a snappy, responsive feel. Its dual foam construction keeps the forefoot a touch softer, which evens out the underfoot feel for heel strikers. It is the more versatile fast running ride of the two.
The Cloudmonster 3 delivers a rockered, rolling ride: a slightly softer heel, a firm forefoot, and very little bounce. Because the heel compresses more than the non-compressible forefoot pods, it feels dynamically lower drop than its numbers suggest. That can strain the calves for some runners and bothered the Achilles a little in testing, though it was manageable.

Neither shoe is a stability model, but the firmer midsole and more prominent sidewalls of the Cloudmonster 3 make it feel inherently a bit more supported, landing it somewhere in borderline stable-neutral territory. Both remain mostly neutral trainers.
Walking and All-Day Comfort
This is where the two versions diverge most clearly. The Cloudmonster 3 rolls beautifully, offers good cushioning without being mushy, and works well as a run-walk shoe and daily walker. Long clinic and teaching days felt good in it. The Cloudmonster 2, by contrast, feels a bit awkward for walking.

If your priority is easy miles, all-day standing, or long unhurried walks, version 3 is the stronger fit. If you want a shoe that can still handle quicker running, version 2 keeps that door open.
Upper and Fit
The Cloudmonster 2 has a notably wide fit with a thin tongue. Runners with average-width feet may need to crank the laces down for a secure fit, which can cause lace bite on the top of the foot. Runners with genuinely wide feet are more likely to appreciate the roominess without that issue. The padded heel collar is comfortable despite a fairly stiff heel counter.
The Cloudmonster 3 moves to a more normal-width fit with a stiffer, better-padded upper and a thicker tongue. The volume is still generous, but wide-footed runners should look at the available wide version. Neither version irritated a sensitive heel in testing.
Durability and Outsole Wear
At 50 miles in each pair, the Cloudmonster 2 showed noticeably more outsole wear, though its midsole broke in nicely and got bouncier. The Cloudmonster 3 is holding up well with less outsole wear and a consistent ride that has not changed for better or worse. With less compressible foam underfoot, its feel should stay stable for a long time.

Buying Advice
Choose the On Cloudmonster 2 if you want the bouncier, more responsive option for running, especially if you have wider feet. Choose the On Cloudmonster 3 if you want a firmer, rockered shoe that doubles as an excellent walker and run-walk trainer, or if you value a more secure, better-padded upper and stronger durability. If fast running is the goal, On’s Cloudmonster Hyper line handles that role better than either of these.
Conclusion
The Cloudmonster 2 and 3 are close on paper but very different in practice. Version 2 is the bouncy, responsive runner with a wide fit; version 3 is the firmer, rockered run-walk shoe with better upper comfort and durability. Matching the ride character to your running and walking habits is the key to picking the right one.
