Norda 005 vs La Sportiva Prodigio Pro: Two Trail Running Shoes With Very Different Personalities

A lightweight, fun-loving speed shoe goes up against a more protective and versatile trail racer. Here is how they compare and which one makes more sense for you.

Introduction

Not all trail shoes are trying to do the same job. Some are built to feel light, quick, and almost effortless, while others trade a bit of that agility for protection and confidence on rougher ground. The Norda 005 and the La Sportiva Prodigio Pro are a great example of that split. One feels like an ATV that can roll over nearly anything; the other is more like a lightweight enduro bike: agile, fast, and ready for a wide variety of terrain.

We spent time running in both to see where each one shines, where each one asks for compromise, and which one we would pick if we could only choose a single shoe.

Norda 005: The Lightweight Trail Speedster

The Norda 005 is the kind of shoe that immediately impresses. It is lightweight, simple, and the foam feels close to perfect underfoot. The outsole works in harmony with that ride, with roughly three and a half millimeter lugs that keep it more in gravel-shoe territory than aggressive trail territory. It rolls smoothly through your stride, has a slight rocker, and leans more toward the road side of running than the rugged trail side.

The smoother the trail, the better this shoe behaves. It is at its best on light to moderate trails, ideally over shorter distances. That said, it has clearly handled extremes: runners have taken it through events like Western States and the JFK 50 Miler, with at least one top finisher wearing it the whole way. For most people, though, about four hours of running is roughly the comfortable ceiling in this shoe.

For how light it is, the 005 delivers a surprising amount of character. It has been described as the pound-for-pound best trail shoe ever made, and it is genuinely one of the most fun shoes to run in. Very few trail shoes bring that kind of fun factor. If you love picking up the pace and feeling light and nimble out on the trails, this shoe makes that easy.

La Sportiva Prodigio Pro: The All-Terrain Confidence Builder

The Prodigio Pro is a completely different animal. It feels much closer to a traditional trail running shoe in build and intent. It is designed to go over terrain: rocks, sticks, roots, and technical ground without hesitation. When running in it, the sensation is that you can simply mow over whatever the trail puts in front of you.

Part of that comes from a considerably higher stack than the 005, paired with a slightly firmer TPU midsole. There is real bounce here too. Between the more aggressive lugs and the spring in the foam, coming off the toe in this shoe can feel like you are bounding forward. It squishes and rebounds with a resilience that gives it a genuine race-day feel, even with more protection underfoot.

The upper is a highlight. It wraps like a wetsuit for your foot, sucking into the platform and keeping you centered even though this shoe sits higher. On more technical trails, that translates directly into confidence, which is rare among high-stack shoes. Very few shoes combine this stack, this energy return, and this runnable feel across such a variety of terrain.

In terms of distance, this is the more ambitious shoe. It is being used for Leadville, a 100-mile race, but optimally it sits in the 50 to 100K range for most runners. It blends the performance of a lighter race-day shoe with the comfort of a higher-stack design.

Fit and Feel: Roomy vs Locked-In

The two shoes differ noticeably in fit. The Norda 005 has a much more generous fit, including in the toe box, with less snugness overall. That lighter upper comes with a trade-off: there is more play and sliding, especially on downhills.

La Sportiva traditionally runs snug, and even though the Prodigio line was designed to be broader, it still feels more secure. Narrower feet will feel that lockdown immediately, but even testers with slightly wider feet reported solid lockdown, with one going up a half size from normal and still finding the fit comfortable.

The weight difference tells a similar story. The Prodigio Pro comes in at roughly 10.4 ounces in a size 10.5, about an ounce and a half, or around 40 grams, heavier than the 005. That is not a huge penalty for the fit, cushioning, and protection you gain.

Price and Value

Price is where the decision gets harder. The Norda 005 launched at $195 and has since increased to $225. It was, alongside perhaps Salomon, the only race-day trail shoe under $200, so the new price is arguably more in line with the rest of the field.

The Prodigio Pro costs $325, which is $100 more. Both are a lot of money, and together they would exceed $500. If value is part of your equation, that $100 difference matters. For a regular consumer, that money could go toward a pack or other gear instead.

Which One Should You Buy?

If you run in the mountains on moderate to technical trails, the Prodigio Pro is the more versatile pick. The fit, the underfoot protection, and the grip are all there in one package, which is rare in a race-day shoe. It also handles road-to-trail transitions comfortably, so if you already have a road shoe you love and want one trail shoe to complement it, this is the one.

Runner crossing technical rocky trail terrain with rocks and roots

If your running leans toward road-to-trail, smoother routes, and faster days where fun and lightness matter most, the 005 is hard to beat. It is arguably exactly what it was made for. It would also have been a great match for runnable coastal routes like the Marin Headlands. On East Coast-style trails full of rocks and roots, though, the Prodigio Pro handles that terrain considerably better.

Taking the emotions out of it, the Prodigio Pro wins this particular battle: more versatile, more protective, and better suited to a wider range of trails, while still feeling quick. But if pure fun and lightness are what draw you to the trails, the 005 is the shoe you will reach for just because it feels great.

Conclusion

Both shoes are excellent in their own right. The Norda 005 is the lightweight, fun, fast option that rewards smooth trails and shorter to moderate efforts. The La Sportiva Prodigio Pro trades a little weight for a locked-in fit, more cushioning, aggressive grip, and the versatility to handle almost any trail. If you have to choose one, the Prodigio Pro is the safer all-around investment, but the 005 remains the most enjoyable pure-speed trail shoe in this comparison.
