Norda 002 vs Norda 001: Which Trail Shoe Should You Buy?
Two trail running shoes from Norda's dyneema-built lineup: a faster, lower-stacked race day option and a durable all-rounder that doubles as a lifestyle favorite.
Introduction
Norda, the boutique trail shoe maker out of Canada, has built its reputation on a simple philosophy: make a better shoe that lasts longer, so you buy less. The prices sit on the higher side of the market, but the materials are genuinely long-lasting, and the attention to detail is evident the moment you pick a pair up.
The lineup’s two headline shoes serve different purposes. The Norda 001 is the general trail and mileage shoe, comfortable enough to double as a lifestyle favorite. The Norda 002 is not its successor; it is a standalone shoe built for faster, race-day efforts, with lighter materials and a lower stack height. Here is how they compare.
Norda 002: The Fast, Low-Stack Race Day Option
The 002 is Norda’s answer to the high-stack trend. While much of the industry keeps raising stack heights, Norda deliberately went lower: 24 mm in the heel and 20 mm in the forefoot, in a lightweight racing-style package. In a size 10.5, the 002 weighs 9.9 oz (281 g), which is on the lighter side for a trail shoe with this much rubber coverage.

On the run, the shoe feels light, quick, and agile underfoot, with more ground feel than the 001. Downhill at speed, the foot still felt well protected thanks to the midsole. The fit is where things need care: the toe box ceiling is low, and testers initially felt the shoe ran small, sizing up to an 11 before finding that the interior packs down over time and restores room in the toe box. Norda’s own guidance is to go up a half size.
Norda 001: The All-Rounder That Grows on You
The 001 is the shoe that made Norda’s name. It is built more for general trail use and mileage, and it wears in beautifully: the upper molds to the foot over time, to the point one long-term wearer described it as feeling like a glove, similar to breaking in a leather jacket or a pair of hard denim. Early fit concerns faded as the shoe packed in, and it became a favorite for both running and everyday wear.
The heel collar padding has since been a known weak point on the 001, with less structure around the collar and heel counter than the newer model. Even so, if you are entering the Norda universe and only buying one pair, this remains the pick, and it has quietly become a fashion sneaker darling as well, spotted on celebrities and collectors alike.
The Dyneema Upper: Strong, Not Stretchy
Both shoes share the same upper material: dyneema, one of the strongest fabrics available. It is also completely non-stretchy and not especially breathable, so on hot days your feet will sweat.

The trade-off is durability and a fit that molds rather than stretches. Over time the upper conforms to the foot, and Norda has dialed in the fit on the 002 with more structure and padding around the heel collar, addressing the thinner padding of the first version. The dyneema laces are essentially indestructible, though the strength of the fibers means you need to tie them properly or they can work loose.
Midsole Feel: Vibram Where It Counts
The 002 uses a Vibram midsole, a genuinely pleasant surprise in a trail shoe. It is an EVA-based compound, but the formulation delivers a damping effect on landing while still retaining a bit of bounce at toe-off. Under the pressure of fast downhill running, the foot stayed protected despite the lower stack.
Some testers found the 24/20 mm platform slightly too low for all-day comfort and would reach for the 001 for anything longer, like a 50K. Others preferred exactly that: a stable, close-to-the-ground shoe that reduces the ankle-rolling risk of tall stack designs. The right choice here is largely a matter of preference.
Outsole and Traction
The 002’s outsole is identical to the 001’s, and that is good news. It carries roughly 4.5 mm lugs plus small protruding knobs of about 6-7 mm for extra traction, and it simply sticks to everything. Anyone who has worn this outsole across multiple shoes already knows how capable it is.

Design details are subtle but intentional. There is no giant logo screaming for attention; instead, a topographical elevation map of a favorite running area is embedded in the outsole and echoed along the side panel. The 002 also adds more substantial toe protection than the 001, a gusseted tongue, a reflective strip, and drops the pull tab in favor of a cleaner look.

Which One Should You Buy?
These are two tools in one kit, not two versions of the same idea. The 001 covers longer miles, easy pace, and doubles as a standout lifestyle shoe. The 002 is the race day option: lighter, quicker, lower to the ground, and best suited to fast, even technical, trail racing.
If you can only own one Norda, the 001 remains the favorite of most testers who have worn both. It is the more comfortable, more form-fitting, and more lovable shoe, and it is the easiest entry point into the brand. If you have already fallen for the 001 and want a dedicated fast-day companion, the 002 earns its place.

One practical note on sizing: expect the 002 to feel short and snug at first. Norda recommends going up a half size, but be aware the shoe packs down inside over time, so your regular size may end up working. Also worth knowing: Norda’s founders answer customer problems directly and work with buyers one on one, which is rare at any price point.
Conclusion
Norda’s lineup rewards riders, and runners, who value durability and design intent over trend-chasing specs. The 002 delivers a light, stable, low-stack race day experience with excellent traction and a dialed-in fit. The 001 remains the all-around pick for mileage, comfort, and everyday wear. Match the shoe to the job, and either one will outlast most of what is on the shelf.
