Nitro Step-On Boots 2023: Profile and Cave Bring a New Boot Fit to the Step-On Family
Nitro joins the Step-On line for 2023 with two boots: the men's Profile Step-On and the women's Cave Step-On. Here's what they share, how they ride, and who they fit.
Introduction
For years, the Step-On system had very few options beyond the brand that created it. That changed when DC licensed the technology in fall 2020, and it changes again for the 2023 season: Nitro is joining the Step-On family with two boots, the men’s Profile Step-On and the women’s Cave Step-On. Both were tested on snow at Aspen Mountain in the original Step-On reflex binding, and both bring Nitro’s boot-building to a system that has earned a loyal following for its speed and responsiveness.
Shared Step-On Features
Both new Nitro boots use the same core Step-On components riders already know: the same heel lock in the back, the same toe cleats, and the same boot-to-binding sizing chart. For men’s sizes, a boot size 6 to 8 fits a small binding, 8.5 to 10.5 fits a medium, and 11 to 13 fits a large. For women, boot sizes 5 to 6 fit a small binding, 6.5 to 8.5 fit a medium, and 9 to 11 fit a large.

That shared foundation matters, because it means you are buying into a proven system rather than an unproven one. The boots click in the same way, hold the heel the same way, and respond the same way as other Step-On boots on the market.
Nitro Profile Step-On (Men’s)
The Profile Step-On is Nitro’s men’s entry and comes in an all-brown colorway as well as an all-black model. Both boots in the 2023 Step-On line use Nitro’s TLS twin lacing system, with two separate zones to tighten: a lower lace and an upper lace, letting you customize the fit across the foot and shin. There is also an internal lacing system with a plastic harness that distributes pressure evenly across the whole liner.
Inside, you get Nitro’s Cloud 9 heat moldable liner, and underfoot a sole with solid traction for icy parking lots and short hikes.

Nitro Cave Step-On (Women’s)
The Cave Step-On is the women’s boot in the line, offered in a black and gray colorway. It shares the same Step-On hardware, the same TLS twin lacing, the same heat moldable liner, and the same grippy sole as the Profile, in a fit shaped for women’s sizing and binding ranges.

For women who have wanted to try Step-On but never found a boot that suited their foot, this is the first Nitro option built for them.
How the Profile Step-On Rides
Tested at Aspen Mountain in the original Step-On reflex binding mounted on a Capita Ultra Fear board, stepping in was just as easy as in any other Step-On boot. The fit was comfortable, with noticeable arch support that helped the overall fit, plus good heel hold in the rear.
Flex-wise, the Profile sits on the softer side, roughly mid to soft. That might sound too soft on paper, but because Step-On is so responsive, it still felt solid on snow. Handling was great in deep and tight carves, it stayed composed at top speed, and it felt just as good while ollieing around. Even in leftover powder and tight tree turns, maneuvering was fine.

Which One Should You Buy?
The bigger story here is fit variety. When Step-On was limited to one boot maker, plenty of riders could not get a proper fit. With Burton, DC, and now Nitro in the family, there is a much better chance of finding a boot that matches your foot. These boots hit availability in fall 2022, and if you are a rider who values soft-to-mid flex, Nitro’s liner comfort, and quick entry, they belong on your shortlist. As always with snowboard boots, the name of the game is trying them on at your local shop to see what fits your foot best.
Conclusion
Nitro’s Profile and Cave Step-On boots bring a softer, comfortable flex and a new fit option to a proven system. If Step-On convenience appeals to you and past boots never quite fit right, Nitro’s entry is well worth a try-on session at your local shop.
