Nike Vomero 17 First Run Review: A Soft, Comfortable Cruiser for Easy Miles

The Nike Vomero 17 pairs ZoomX foam with Cushlon 3.0 in a plush daily trainer built for relaxed, long-distance miles.

Introduction

The Nike Vomero 17 arrives as a premium cushioning option aimed squarely at long, relaxed miles. It brings two notable changes over the Vomero 16: a redesigned midsole intended to deliver a softer, smoother ride, and a new upper that is lighter and more breathable. This shoe combines ZoomX foam with Cushlon 3.0, and it carries a 10 mm drop with 39.5 mm of stack at the heel and 30 mm at the forefoot. Weight comes in at 292 grams (10.3 ounces) in a UK men’s size 8.5, and the retail price is $160.

This first-impression review is based on roughly 10K of easy running, plus a few additional easy miles after that.

Who the Vomero 17 Is For

If you like maximum cushioning but found the Invincible 3 or the new InfinityR 4 simply too much shoe, too heavy, or too clunky, the Vomero 17 makes a strong case. That dual-foam setup still leans heavy, but it strips things back a bit, resulting in a shoe that works well for easy mileage without interrupting your stride.

It is also a good match for runners who prefer a structured upper. The engineered mesh uses multi and monofilament yarns that give the upper real structure while staying soft, comfortable, light, and breathable. There is generous padding in the heel collar and tongue, plenty of room in the toe box, and a well cradled, secure overall feel.

Main Strengths

The biggest change sits in the midsole. Nike removed the Zoom Air unit to simplify the platform, leaving ZoomX foam on top and Cushlon 3.0 underneath. The goal is a softer ride with smoother transitions, and in early running the shoe delivers exactly that: a soft landing platform with a bit of bounce and foam return, more bounce than spring, but enough kick when you pick up the pace.

Out on the road, the Waffle lugs held up nicely, including in wet conditions, and the decoupled outsole helps keep transitions rolling along. Step-in comfort was excellent straight out of the box: no rubbing, no hot spots, no slipping, with good lockdown and heel hold.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The first impression out of the box was a touch too soft and squishy, and it took a few miles at a better pace and form before the midsole started giving noticeably more back. If you want a firm, snappy ride, this may not be the shoe for it, at least not until more testing confirms how it behaves when running faster.

There is a lot of sink and softness here, so you need to genuinely enjoy that feeling of sinking in and then having the foam return underneath you. Overall weight is on the heavier side as well, which fits the cruiser character but won’t suit everyone.

Buying Advice

For fit, a UK 8.5 tester found it spot on: strong heel hold from the ample padding, good lockdown across the top, and enough toe box room and forefoot width. Going true to size is a sensible recommendation.

If most of your running is low and slow, recovery miles, or relaxed cruising where you just want to get out, protect your feet, and enjoy the run, the Vomero 17 fits that brief well. Think of it in the same company as something like the On Cloudmonster: a happy cruiser for easy mileage.

Conclusion

Early miles suggest the Vomero 17 will make a happy cruiser. It is a bit soft, but not excessively so, with just enough response to give a kick when needed, a big structured upper that holds the foot well, decent stability, and reliable Waffle grip even in wet conditions. For easy runs and recovery days, it ticks the box, and faster testing will show whether that springiness becomes something more energetic at speed.
