Nike Pegasus 41 First Run Review: A Softer, Safer Update to a Daily Trainer Classic
Nike's Pegasus 41 swaps React for the new ReactX foam and adds stack height, but keeps the familiar Pegasus formula. Our first impressions from an easy hour on road and light trail.
Introduction
The Nike Pegasus 41 is the successor to the Pegasus 40, and it arrives as a bigger update than the last couple of generations. The headline change is an all-new midsole setup: Nike’s ReactX foam replaces the older React foam, while the familiar Air Zoom units remain in the heel and forefoot. Priced at £130 in the UK and $140 in the US, it weighs 291g (10.3oz) in a UK size 9 and keeps a 10mm drop.
After an easy hour on mixed road and light trail, our first impression is that this is very much a Pegasus: solid, comfortable and unremarkable in the way loyal fans expect.
What Changed: ReactX Foam and More Stack
ReactX first appeared in the Nike Infinity Run 4 and is designed to deliver more energy return with a lower carbon footprint than previous foam. The stack height has increased to a reported 37mm at the heel and 27mm at the forefoot, roughly 4mm more than the Pegasus 40, yet the weight stays essentially the same as the previous model.
The two Air Zoom units, one in the heel and one in the forefoot, still add a touch of firmness and pop to what is otherwise a fairly soft midsole. The waffle-tread outsole carries over from the Pegasus 40 with slightly reshaped lugs, and it has historically been excellent for both grip and durability.

Fit and Upper
Fit is very similar to the Pegasus 40: true to a normal running shoe size, with enough toe box room without excess, and a secure hold through the midfoot and heel. The engineered mesh upper has been tweaked to be more breathable and lighter, though it still feels a touch warm and padded over the top of the foot. The big padded tongue remains one of the more comfortable in the category.
One watch-out is the large, stiff internal heel counter, the kind that can irritate the Achilles tendon. There was slight irritation on the first run, though it settled afterward, so this needs a bit more testing.

First Run Impressions
On an easy hour mixing road and light trail, the Pegasus 41 delivered plenty of comfort. The ReactX midsole feels a little softer and squishier than the Pegasus 40’s foam, and it seems to have more pop than the all-ReactX midsole in the Infinity Run 4, but after one run it does not feel like a particularly versatile shoe. It handled light dry trails well, as Pegasus models typically do, thanks to that dependable outsole.
Notably, the shoe still has very little rocker geometry. It feels traditional through foot strike, slapping through for heel strikers rather than rolling smoothly, and other shoes with similar drops feel more controlled. The forefoot can also still feel slightly thin compared with some modern trainers. Overall this reads as a cruiser: a big cushioned daily trainer best kept mostly for easy runs, with a similar performance level to recent Pegasus generations.

How It Fits in the Market
The Pegasus 41 sticks closely to the blueprint that made the line popular. Nike still lacks the truly versatile lightweight all-rounder trainer that many brands now offer, whether plated or unplated. Compared with options like the New Balance Rebel v4 or Hoka Mach 6 as unplated all-rounders, the Pegasus 41 sits more firmly in the cushioned shoe category, though it offers a bit more comfort than the Hoka.
At this competitive price point, two shoes felt stronger from the very first run: the Adidas Nova Blast 4 (same price) and the Puma Velocity Nitro 3 (cheaper). Both feel no less comfortable and slightly more enjoyable to run in. Early days, but it is worth considering the alternatives before committing.

Conclusion
The Pegasus 41 is a comfortable, softly updated daily trainer that improves on the Pegasus 40 without dramatically changing the ride. Loyal Pegasus fans will likely be satisfied, but runners seeking a more versatile or more lively trainer have strong alternatives at or below this price. A fuller verdict will follow after faster-paced testing.
