Nike Invincible 3 vs New Balance Fresh Foam More V4: Two Max Cushion Trainers, Two Very Different Rides

Two max cushion daily trainers with nearly identical weight but very different personalities. We compare fit, ride, stability and value to help you pick the right one.

Introduction

Max cushion daily trainers are built for one job: making easy miles feel better. Two of the most prominent options in this space, the Nike Invincible 3 and the New Balance Fresh Foam More V4, weigh almost exactly the same and aim at the same runner, yet they deliver completely different rides. One is bouncy and playful, the other is a smooth, stable cruiser. This comparison breaks down where each shoe shines so you can decide which personality suits your running.

At a Glance

The Nike Invincible 3 costs £169.95 or $180 and weighs 299 grams (10.5 oz) for men in a size 8, with a 9mm drop. The New Balance Fresh Foam More V4 costs £140 or $149.99 and weighs 298 grams (10.5 oz) for men in a size 8, with a 4mm drop.

The Invincible 3 carries updates across the shoe, including a wider midsole for stability, a taller foam stack for more cushioning, and a smaller heel clip for a better fit. It also features a durable Flyknit upper with breathability zones and a new lining under the heel for a slightly firmer, more stable ride. That updated design makes it slightly heavier than previous versions.

The More V4 adds even more Fresh Foam X midsole foam than its predecessor, making it higher and wider to improve stability. New Balance also updated the outsole with cushion zones and flex zones for a more natural feel, kept the rocker profile for smooth transitions, and used a plush engineered mesh upper. Generous rubber coverage protects the foam, and a reflective logo adds visibility at night.

Fit and Sizing

Both shoes run true to size. Testers found plenty of room in the toe box with no problems, and no one reported issues with the fit in the New Balance. The Nike is a little loose around the heel; one tester experienced no heel rub personally, but noted it could be a problem for some runners.

The Run Test

Despite weighing almost the same and targeting the same job, these two shoes have very different rides. The New Balance, with its lower drop, big rocker, Fresh Foam X midsole and foam side walls, is a roll-through cruiser. It is never exciting underfoot, but it is stable, protective on the legs, and you can tick off endless miles in exactly the same way. It does not deaden each step; it simply rolls you forward comfortably and efficiently.

The Invincible 3 is much softer and much bouncier, and at times genuinely fun. However, despite Nike’s updates, it is still not a stable shoe. One tester found it wobbly enough to be borderline unusable while coming back from a knee niggle, while loving it when feeling fresh. Another tester found it slightly more rigid and a little less enjoyable than the Invincible 1 and 2, though still noticeably softer than the More V4.

On the Zoom X foam itself: it bounces you up rather than propelling you forward. Unlike the Zoom X experience in racing shoes, the energy does not direct you onward; it simply keeps you popping up nicely, and your legs feel great at the end of a run. That makes the Invincible better suited to comfortable recovery runs and enjoyable daily miles than to maintaining a consistent pace over long efforts.

If you want a daily trainer that can handle some speedier work, the more responsive Nike midsole gives you more bounce. The More V4, meanwhile, delivers the same steady ride whatever pace you run. Its 4mm drop sounds low, but testers reported no calf aggravation at all.

Verdict: Which One Should You Buy?

For easy and long miles as part of a rotation, the More V4 is the more reliable pick. It is considerably cheaper, always good for its purpose, and dependable as a daily shoe: reliable, comfortable, nicely stable, and the kind of shoe many runners keep near the door as their go-to for standard 10Ks, recovery runs and slow miles.

If you are more of a one-shoe runner covering a few 5 to 10K runs a week and want maximum enjoyment, the Invincible 3 is the more interesting and bouncier option. The trade-off is that there will be times you would rather have a more solid platform underfoot, and if the Invincible is your only option it can feel squirrely and wobbly. If you love that soft, sinking, bouncy feeling, it can be a big winner.

Conclusion

Both shoes do max cushion well but for different runners. The New Balance Fresh Foam More V4 is the dependable, stable cruiser that protects your legs mile after mile at a lower price. The Nike Invincible 3 is the softer, bouncier, more playful ride, but its instability and higher price make it a pick for those who specifically enjoy that underfoot feel.
