Nike Alphafly 3 After 100 Miles: A Marathon Super Shoe That Grows on You
After 100 miles of testing, the Nike Alphafly 3 proves to be a comfortable, leg-saving marathon shoe with a few real trade-offs to know before buying.
Introduction
The Nike Alphafly 3 is Nike’s flagship marathon racing shoe, and after 100 miles in a pair bought with our own money, our first impression has completely changed. The early runs were underwhelming, even problematic, but over time the shoe settled into being one of the most enjoyable, leg-saving super shoes we have used. It scores 10.9 out of 12 overall after 100 miles, which translates to roughly 90 percent. The question is not whether it is good, but whether it is worth the money for you.
Who This Product Is For
This is a shoe built first and foremost for marathon effort. If you are entering marathon training or running a marathon and have enjoyed previous Alphafly versions, this one is likely to click with you. It works across a surprisingly wide range of effort levels in training, from easy and recovery runs through to marathon-pace sessions, where the ride feels almost effortless. It is less compelling at 5K pace and is not our first choice for 10K or half marathon racing, where lower, firmer shoes offer a better balance.
Main Strengths
Midsole: The Star of the Shoe
The midsole is where the Alphafly 3 earns its keep. The foam feels slightly more rubbery and less dense than the previous version, with a touch less of it in the forefoot, so the air pods feel a little more engaged. The heel is wonderfully forgiving; you can sink into it like a sofa when you want to. At marathon effort it is exceptional: the power required to hold marathon-pace work felt low, and heart rate stayed in check. Easy and recovery miles are genuinely comfortable too, cradling the foot after hard races and getting the legs moving again. After about 15 to 20 miles the structure beds in and the ride keeps improving, and the early arch pain completely disappeared over longer efforts. It is the most stable, enjoyable and exciting Alphafly release so far. It earns 2.8 out of 3.

Upper: Comfortable but High Maintenance
The mesh upper is exceptionally comfortable and containing, with very few fit issues across long sessions up to 16 to 18 miles and no heel slip. It does need care, though. The mesh stains easily, especially around the toe box reinforcement, and it will never look as fresh as it did out of the box. The knit-like area at the heel snags easily, so use only a very soft bristle brush. Getting the shoe on is a bit of a chore; you really need the heel tab to shoehorn your foot in. Scores 2.8 out of 3.

Outsole and Durability
The outsole is the fly in the ointment. Rubber under the forefoot air pods has worn down considerably after 100 miles, and some black rubber in the heel wore quickly, though the heel rubber itself held up well. On the plus side, the rubber has protected the foam very well in wet weather, with no tearing or disintegration, and plenty of life remains. Expect the ZoomX foam to crease with use; that is normal for this material. A small foam tear was easily fixed with shoe glue. Keep these to concrete and tarmac only, as trails with gravel and stones will destroy them quickly. Scores 2.7 out of 3.
Things to Consider Before Buying
Fit and Sizing
Go true to size; most people will be fine with their standard Nike size. We tested a half size up because we fall between sizes, and both worked, with sizing dependent partly on sock choice. The stretchy stitched-in tongue can bunch slightly in the first eyelets, an issue absent in the half-size-down pair. Wider feet may spill over the edge onto the midsole, but for narrow or normal width feet the fit should be good. Lacing pressure is minimal and comfortable even on top of the foot.

Price and Value
At £285 in the UK, this is an expensive shoe, and the outsole wears quickly enough that you should buy ready for deterioration. The value score of 2.6 out of 3 reflects the fun and enjoyment the shoe delivered, including a couple of personal bests at 10K and half marathon distances and a genuine boost to running motivation, rather than its early wear. It is also lighter and more forgiving than the previous version, back closer to the essence of the original with added comfort.

Buying Advice
If you want one shoe for marathon racing and marathon training, the Alphafly 3 is a strong pick and arguably the best Alphafly yet. Do not buy it expecting it to stay pristine, do not take it off-road, and be prepared to use it as a tool rather than a display piece. If your racing focus is 5K to half marathon, there are better-suited options with more ground feel and less bulk.
Conclusion
After 100 miles, the Nike Alphafly 3 has gone from doubtful first impression to firm favourite: supremely comfortable, leg-saving at any effort level, and reliably fast at marathon pace. The trade-offs are a high price, quick outsole wear, and a stain-prone upper that needs gentle care. If those are acceptable, it is an easy recommendation for marathon-focused runners.
