Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 39 Review: A Daily Trainer Steps Into the Modern Era
The 39th Pegasus loses weight, gains comfort, and finally feels like a do-it-all daily trainer again. Here's what to know before buying.
Introduction
The Pegasus rarely sounds like an exciting shoe. It is Nike’s daily trainer, not a race-day super shoe, and it has been around for nearly four decades. Yet every new version still gets attention, and the Air Zoom Pegasus 39 earns it. This generation fixes the main complaints from the Pegasus 38, drops an ounce in weight, and turns the shoe into a genuine contender against lighter middleweight trainers that can cross into tempo territory.
What Makes the Pegasus 39 Different
The Pegasus 38 occupied an awkward space. It was comfortable, and the forefoot Air Zoom bag had nice pop as long as it did not burst, but it was not a shoe you could pick up the pace in, and it leaned toward the heavier side. The 39 changes that. It loses an ounce, feels more responsive on the foot, and stays out of the way of your running.

That makes it fair to compare against shoes like the Hoka Rincon or even the Hoka Mach, and it holds up well in that company. If the last version did not work for you, this is a good reason to try the Pegasus again.
Upper, Fit, and Lockdown
The new upper is more breathable, with a mesh that is almost translucent. The tongue is incorporated into a second layer of the upper, creating a sock-like, mule-style construction, with just the right amount of padding to protect the foot over the arch. Flywire has returned in full force, and lockdown is excellent.

This is a fairly narrow shoe, which some runners will love and others will not. The heel counter has gained a lot of padding, eliminating the heel lift that some people felt in recent Pegasus versions, and the pointy rear tab from before has been chopped off. Everything about the fit feels like a tried-and-true Nike classic.
Midsole and Ride Feel
The React foam midsole remains a solid cushioning system: stable and soft enough to give a nice ground feel on landing without being harsh, and dialed in nicely here. The shoe carries a 10mm drop, and there is now an Air Zoom unit in both the forefoot and the heel, the latter being new this year.
Compared with the previous version, comfort is better, the React feels softer, and the whole shoe is more flexible, rolling naturally with the foot so it feels like your foot is doing the work. The one nitpick: a millimeter or so more React under the toes would not hurt, though the forefoot Air Zoom bag fills out the ride there.
Outsole, Traction, and Durability
Traction is a genuine strength. The outsole pattern switched to a diamond design that you can really feel gripping the road, and it performs smoothly in pretty much any road condition, even doubling as a backup trail shoe if needed. New flex grooves change up the flexibility pattern as well.

Durability is equally impressive. The rubber should easily take the shoe to 400 miles or more, and React is one of the longer-lasting foams around. At the new $130 price, up from $120, it is still one of the better value buys in running given the versatility and longevity.
Buying Advice
This is not a speed shoe, and it does not pretend to be one. It can pick up to marathon pace for a couple of miles during a workout, but for dedicated fast days you would rather have a proper speed shoe. Where it shines is as a smooth, reliable workhorse for daily miles, with enough responsiveness to handle the occasional quicker session.
If you have narrow feet and want a dependable, long-lasting daily trainer, this is an easy recommendation. It sits comfortably among the top daily trainers in recent memory.
Conclusion
The Air Zoom Pegasus 39 is one of the strongest versions of this legendary shoe in years: lighter, more comfortable, more flexible, and more versatile than its predecessor. The main drawback is the styling, which some runners may find uninspired, and the narrow fit will not suit everyone. For daily training, though, this is a shoe that rarely lets you down.
