New Balance FuelCell Race Day Lineup: SC Elite v4, SC Pacer v2, and SC Trainer v3
Three fast FuelCell shoes for 2024: a marathon leader, a lightweight racer, and a forgiving trainer with carbon fiber underfoot.
Introduction
For 2024, New Balance describes the FuelCell line as a rebirth of what the platform is meant to represent, and the result is a three-shoe family that covers race day and fast training. Across the line you will see shared design language, from midsole geometry to uppers, with purposeful faceted angles that are not purely cosmetic. Those facets let designers shave weight while keeping the structure the shoes need. Every FuelCell shoe in this 2024 lineup includes PEBA content in the midsole, and each model has a distinct job: a marathon leader, a stripped-down racer, and a forgiving carbon-plated trainer.
New Balance FuelCell SC Elite v4
The SC Elite v4 leads the FuelCell platform and carries the biggest updates. Designers shaved roughly 10% of the weight out of the predecessor by using faceted angles in the midsole geometry instead of a smooth surface, so the sculpted look serves a real function. The midsole is now 100% PEBA for higher energy return, and the shoe keeps the two-layer Energy Arc system, which uses a carbon fiber plate running through the midsole to create deflection and energy return on toe-off.

The carbon fiber plate itself is thinner than before and includes subtle ripples, which allowed New Balance to maintain the required stiffness while trimming weight for race day. The 4mm offset stays in place, with more PEBA foam placed under the forefoot to deliver the pop and roll into toe-off that runners notice when picking up the pace.

The upper brings back Phantom fit, a bonded material on the inside of the mesh that locks the foot down better. The idea is simple: if the midsole and plate are doing the work but your foot slides around, you lose the metabolic economy benefit the shoe is built to provide. The SC Elite v4 sits at a 40mm stack, is World Athletics legal, and is priced at $250 with availability from February 1st, making it a legitimate option for anyone targeting a world major.
New Balance FuelCell SC Pacer v2
The SC Pacer v2 is a complete overhaul from its predecessor, built around data from New Balance’s elite marathoners. It has one of the most unique stack heights in the category: 32.8mm at the heel and 24.8mm at the forefoot in a men’s 9.5. Those numbers were informed by American marathon record holder Emily Sisson’s data in the New Balance Sports Research Lab. Rather than starting at the standard sample size and grading down, New Balance started at her size, dialed in what was optimal for her biomechanics, and graded up.
The goal is a more proprioceptive feel underfoot for half marathon and full marathon racing, while keeping the 100% PEBA midsole and the same lightweight ribbon carbon fiber plate as the Elite. In a women’s 7.5 the shoe lands in the low 6-ounce range, and the single-layer mesh upper is deliberately bare bones, just enough to get you through a marathon comfortably fast, with the logo spray painted on to save weight.

New Balance calls this a race day shoe, pure and simple, a race car meant to go fast, though their athletes do use it for track reps and fast tempo work. Compared with the SC Elite v4, the Pacer is essentially the minimal version: lower to the ground, snappier, and slightly lighter, trading some cushioning for a more direct pop. It is priced at $200 with release planned for the back half of 2024.
New Balance FuelCell SC Trainer v3
The SC Trainer v2 was a huge success, striking a balance between a training shoe and the race day experience, and the v3 keeps that DNA while adopting the new geometric design language of the 2024 FuelCell line. The philosophy behind the Trainer is to deliver the race experience, with high rebound foam and a carbon fiber plate, in a safer, more forgiving setup, so a runner can finish a 20-mile run without feeling as beat up as after a marathon.

The two-layer midsole pairs with the carbon fiber plate, and the plate was curved to remove 29 grams on its own, keeping the same bounce in a lighter package. While the Elite and Pacer use 100% PEBA, the Trainer v3 midsole compound contains 20% PEBA, which still delivers the bounce and pop you want from a fast trainer. The upper focuses on comfort for daily training, with breathability and a plush collar and tongue, so you can settle into long miles and still pick up the pace when you want. The stack height is 40/34, which keeps it World Athletics legal, so racing a marathon in it is no problem. It is priced at $180 with release planned for the back half of 2024.
Which One Should You Buy?
If you want maximum cushioning and the full race day experience at a World Athletics legal 40mm stack, the SC Elite v4 is the leader of the platform at $250. If you are chasing a lower, snappier, lighter ride and prioritize ground feel over cushion, the SC Pacer v2 at $200 is the minimal race day option informed directly by elite marathon data. If you want that carbon-plated pop for daily training and long runs in a forgiving package, the SC Trainer v3 at $180 is the most versatile pick of the three.
Conclusion
The 2024 FuelCell lineup is clearly built with intent: shared faceted midsole geometry, PEBA foam in every model, and a clear hierarchy from the plush Trainer v3 to the minimal Pacer v2 to the race-ready Elite v4. Match the shoe to the job, race day, fast racing, or daily miles, and each one has a well-defined place in the rotation.
