New Balance FuelCell Elite V4 Review: A Carbon-Placed Racer Tested Over a Hilly Half Marathon
The FuelCell Elite V4 gets a redesigned PEBA-based FuelCell midsole and a featherlight Phantom Fit upper. We ran it over a challenging hilly half marathon to see how it performs.
Introduction
The New Balance FuelCell Elite V4 is the brand’s latest carbon-plated race day speed machine, and this generation has been rebuilt from the ground up: a completely redesigned FuelCell midsole made from PEBA foam, plus an ultralight bonded Phantom Fit upper. Essentially, it is a brand-new shoe rather than a mild refresh.
Rather than judging it in isolation, it was tested in the most appropriate environment possible: a full, very hilly half marathon straight out of the box, complete with steep climbs, long descents, wet and muddy back roads, and even a flooded stretch of tarmac. Here is how it performed.
Overview and Key Specs
As a carbon-plated race day shoe, the FuelCell Elite V4 is not aimed at the budget end of the market. In the UK it retails for £260, so it is positioned firmly in the premium super shoe category.

My pair in a UK 10 tipped the scales at 261 grams. That is not the lightest race day shoe available, but it is a good figure given how much soft cushioning sits in the midsole. The stack height comes in at 40 mm in the heel and 36 mm under the forefoot, keeping it just under the legal height limit for racing, with a 4 mm heel-to-toe drop.
Upper Design: Phantom Fit
The Phantom Fit upper is very similar to the one on the excellent FuelCell Rebel V4. It uses an almost transparent, extremely lightweight and highly breathable mesh fabric to keep weight to a minimum, with an internal orange midfoot band adding structure and substance to what would otherwise be a very soft upper.
One surprise is the standard, non-gusseted tongue, which is very thin with no padding at all. That raised questions about lace comfort across the top of the foot and overall lockdown. Around the ankle there is moderate padding on the collar and heel, paired with a low-slung heel cup design. In practice, this setup proved comfortable and very secure.
The Redesigned Midsole and Energy Arc
The biggest change sits underfoot. The FuelCell midsole is now made from PEBA foam, the cushioning of choice in most modern carbon-plated racers, including Nike’s very popular Vaporfly and Alphafly Next%. It is a material with a proven track record: extremely comfortable over distance and packed with energy return.

Inside that soft, bouncy foam sits a redesigned, thinner carbon plate. A strategically placed void in the midsole lets you see the carbon fiber plate through the outsole, and together the void and plate form New Balance’s Energy Arc technology. The theory is that the void increases the energy stored in the shoe, allowing more energy to be delivered back on toe-off. New Balance has also worked in efficient rocker geometry, plus blown rubber in the high-wear areas for grip and durability.
Real-World Testing at the Falmouth Half Marathon
To test a race day shoe properly, we took it racing: the Falmouth Half Marathon in Cornwall, one of the most challenging and scenic road half marathons in the UK, with plenty of steep ups and downs along the way.
The first four miles were hilly, averaging 7:25 per mile, and the shoe felt good straight out of the box. The midsole felt extremely bouncy the moment it was tried on at home, and that translated well onto the road. By 9 miles, pace had settled to 7:35 average, and the PEBA FuelCell midsole was still delivering a bouncy, high-energy, very comfortable ride, with the rocker geometry feeling efficient enough to keep pushing late in the race.

The race finished in around 1 hour 37 minutes, taken steady on the first half and pushed hard on the second. Legs felt strong the whole way around, including a sprint to the line, and the midsole and Energy Arc technology seemed to genuinely help take the impact off the muscle groups, which matters on a route with steep climbs and long, punishing descents.
Fit, Comfort, and How It Performed on the Run
The Elite V4 fits noticeably differently from the Rebel V4 despite the similar-looking Phantom Fit upper. As a race day shoe, it gives a more foot-hugging fit: less volume and width in the toe box and a shallower midfoot. That worked really well for a medium-width foot and locked down nicely. As always with New Balance, going up half a size is recommended, and the fit proved spot on. The breathable mesh upper also performed well in warm sunshine.
Grip was a standout. The route was muddy and greasy in places after heavy rain, including a long deep flooded puddle, and the blown rubber outsole handled everything with confidence, even on steep greasy descents.
There were two minor cautions. The deep stack of soft foam plus carbon plate initially felt slightly disconnected and unstable, which took a few miles to adjust to after time away from super shoes. And in the last couple of miles, a hot spot began to form on the heel of the right foot. It never became a blister, but it might have with two or three more miles. It is worth remembering this was a hilly half marathon in brand-new shoes, in a collar design that is essentially identical to the Rebel V4’s, which caused no issues at all on a 13-mile first run.

Buying Advice
If you are shopping for a go-faster carbon-plated shoe, the FuelCell Elite V4 deserves a close look. It sits comfortably alongside the excellent Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 and Nike’s Vaporfly Next%. Just be aware of two things: like most race day shoes, it comes up fairly narrow, so wider-footed runners should try before buying, and expect to pay a premium £260 in the UK.
Conclusion
The New Balance FuelCell Elite V4 is a successful, thorough redesign. The new PEBA-based FuelCell midsole is comfortable over 13.1 miles and returns impressive energy, the Energy Arc technology and rocker geometry help protect the legs on demanding terrain, and the Phantom Fit upper is light, breathable, and secure. With only minor niggles around the initial stability and a heel hot spot on race day, it is an easy shoe to recommend for runners chasing a genuine race day advantage.
