Narwhal Schuylkill Review: A Piston-Filled Fountain Pen That Punches Above Its Price
The Narwhal Schuylkill in Cichlid purple with rose gold trim is a piston-filled fountain pen with an ink window, a home-serviceable piston, and a smooth broad nib for around €50.
Introduction
The Narwhal Schuylkill sits in a sweet spot that few fountain pens reach: it is a piston filler with a visible ink window, a fully serviceable piston, and a genuinely pleasant nib, all for around €49.59. The version covered here is the Cichlid finish with rose gold trim and a broad stainless steel nib.
The name checks out. The Schuylkill is a river that runs through Philadelphia, and Cichlid is a purple fish, which explains the deep purplish finish on this pen.
Design and Finish
Narwhal does cool things with finishes, and Cichlid is no exception. It is a very pretty deep purple with fine shimmer that catches the light nicely, paired with polished rose gold trim throughout, including a rose gold clip that is nicely springy.
Size-wise, it is a touch longer and slightly girthier than a Pilot Metropolitan, so this is not a small pen. The barrel tapers down gently, and the section flares out slightly at the end, which makes for a very comfortable grip. The threads are not sharp when the pen is assembled, though stroking the threads in one particular direction can feel a little sharper, so just mind how you handle the section. The pen also posts, and because it is a big pen to begin with, posting is shallow but it becomes quite a large instrument.

One small caveat: there is no metal band around the cap. It always makes me a little nervous that a crack or stress fracture could develop over time, so it is probably wise not to overtighten the cap.
Ink Window and Piston Filler
The ink window is a highlight. It is visible with the pen capped, which means you never have to uncap it just to check how much ink you have. That is a genuinely useful touch that many pens at this price omit.
The piston turning knob sits at the end of the barrel with a rose gold ring around it, and the piston mechanism gives you a nice ink capacity. In use, the pen filled easily and the piston action works as expected.

The Included Wrench and Home Maintenance
This is the feature that sets the Schuylkill apart at this price. The box includes a small wrench that fits into a slot in the pen and lets you unscrew the piston so you can grease and service it yourself. On many pens at or far above this price point, you have to buy that tool separately.
The box itself is refreshingly simple. It is mostly cardboard with no plastic, so it can be recycled if you do not want to keep it. Inside there is a no-frills information pamphlet covering how to fill the pen, the wrench in its slot, and a simple protective sleeve. That is all you need, and it is honest packaging.

The Nib
The Schuylkill uses a #6 stainless steel nib available in fine, medium, broad, and stub. The nib has a small narwhal engraving with scroll work, and it pairs with a plastic feed. The nib may look a little small against the body, but that is just an impression created by the larger pen.
Writing performance with the broad nib is smooth and pleasant. It keeps up nicely with fast writing and offers a fairly moderate wetness, not a gusher. With a slightly drier ink, the output is impressive; if this were my pen, I might nudge the flow a touch wetter, but it is certainly not too dry. With no pressure at all, it writes quite nicely.

A bonus for certain writing styles: the nib performs very well in reverse. Upside-down writing is often scratchy on other pens, but the Schuylkill stays smooth and keeps going. For people who flip the pen over for math or fine work, that is a real selling point. As for line variation, this is not advertised as a flex nib, so any variation is at your own risk, though as a solid steel nib you may be able to squeeze out a little light variation.
Things to Consider Before Buying
The only real nitpick is the missing cap band, which is a durability worry rather than a functional flaw. Beyond that, there is very little to complain about. The purple Cichlid finish can read quite dark, so you may not fully appreciate the shimmer in dim light.
Buying Advice
For around €50, you get a piston filler, a visible ink window, home-serviceable maintenance with the included wrench, a comfortable grip, posting capability, and a smooth, pleasant nib. There are cheaper pens out there, but a piston-filled, user-serviceable, comfortable writer is not a combination you always get at this price. There are pens ten times this price that do not offer all of that. If you want a genuine piston filler without a big investment, this is an easy recommendation.
Conclusion
The Narwhal Schuylkill in Cichlid purple with rose gold trim is a lovely writer with a great size, a thoughtful ink window, and an unusual level of serviceability for its price. It is a pen that is easy to recommend and hard to find fault with.
