Introduction

The Montegrappa Elmo Raspberry Ripple is a limited edition version of the Elmo, the entry-level pen in Montegrappa’s lineup. This particular model is exclusive to the retailer Limited Pens Korea, which has built a reputation for working with manufacturers and resin makers to create offerings that cannot be found anywhere else.

This edition is made from resin produced by Tim Crow of the Turnt Pen Company, a resin maker who supplies rod stock to other manufacturers as well as creating materials for his own pens. It is a limited edition of 100 non-numbered units, and it retails for $199, which is essentially the standard price for most other Elmo models. Getting a limited edition for the same price as a standard release is a genuinely appealing detail.

What’s in the Box

The pen arrives in the standard large Montegrappa box. The sleeve slides off to reveal a box with a flap-style opening, and inside you get the pen itself, a use and care guide, and a couple of standard international cartridges. A converter is included as well, one with a metal housing and metal inner thread portion.

One practical note: while the pen is a cartridge-converter model, eyedropper conversion is not recommended, so plan on cartridges or the included converter.

Design and Build Quality

The Raspberry Ripple resin is a red and white creamy swirl, with the colors ribboned through the material in a way that echoes the ripple ice cream the name references. In person it reads slightly more pink than a true raspberry red, likely because the red mixed with the pearlescent white lightens the overall hue. It still looks attractive, and the material has a subtle chatoyance to it.

Fountain pen cap and clip detail in soft natural light

The cap is rounded at the top and carries the standard Montegrappa clip, which is slightly bowed and features a wheel. Wheeled clips generally make a clip easier to use, and the design looks good, but the clip on this pen is very stiff. Even on thin materials it takes real effort to attach, and it could barely be fitted to a shirt pocket. Worth noting: other Montegrappa pens tested alongside it have similarly stiff clips, so this appears to be a brand-wide trait rather than a defect of this specific unit. The cap is engraved with the Montegrappa name, filled with what appears to be silver paint, which helps the lettering stand out and hides the tool marks typical of resin engraving.

The transition from cap to barrel is very smooth. The barrel straightens out for about an inch before tapering down evenly to a rounded end. The section is slightly concave with wide, widely spaced threads and a medium step up to the barrel. Neither the threads nor the step interferes with grip, and the section is comfortable even though it is not overly long. Overall construction feels solid and well made; the pen does not feel cheap in the hand.

Everyday Use

The Elmo is a medium-sized pen, neither overly large nor small. It is long enough to use unposted comfortably. The cap does post securely, but not deeply, so it adds noticeable length. The cap is very light, so it does not back-weight the pen or throw off the balance. However, the inside edge of the cap can feel a bit sharp against the palm if it touches during writing, so using it unposted is the more comfortable choice.

Filling is by standard international cartridges or the included converter. Two cartridges come in the box, and the metal-reinforced converter feels sturdy. The cap twists off in just under two rotations.

Nib and Writing Performance

Under the cap sits a stainless steel number six nib, available in extra fine, fine, medium, broad, and stub. The octagonal nib imprint is a Montegrappa signature that looks sharp and distinctive.

The medium nib on this example is fairly smooth with just a touch of what could be called good feedback, and it is very pleasant to use. Ink flow is decent, the feed keeps up fine during fast writing, and reverse writing works well, though it is a little sharp. For a stainless steel nib at this price point, the writing experience is thoroughly respectable.

Size, Measurements and Writing Sample

Next to pens like the TWSBI Vac 700, the Lamy AlStar, and the Pilot Metropolitan, the Elmo sits comfortably in the medium size range. Against other Montegrappa models such as the Chrysiocola and the Mia Adriatic Sea, it reads as the more compact, entry-level option in the family.

Handwriting sample with deep red shimmering ink on white paper

In testing, the medium nib paired nicely with Ferris Wheel Press Wondrous Winterberry, a deep red shimmering ink with gold shimmer that suits the pen’s character. The ink performs well, though the small 38 ml Ferris Wheel Press bottles have a very narrow neck that makes it hard to fit larger pens and feels easy to tip over. Diamine Firestorm Red and Leonardo Red Passion are good brighter red alternatives if you want to pair a matching ink with this pen.

Buying Advice

At $199, the Raspberry Ripple costs the same as most standard Elmo models while offering an exclusive, limited material that only 100 buyers will own. If you like the resin, it is an easy recommendation over a standard Elmo. Just be aware of the stiff clip and the slightly sharp posted cap edge, and decide whether you plan to write unposted. The sibling Inception edition in blue is also available if red and white is not your palette.

Conclusion

The Montegrappa Elmo Raspberry Ripple is a well-constructed, comfortable writer with a charming material and a pleasant stainless steel nib. The stiff clip is the main annoyance, but for fans of Montegrappa or of distinctive resins, this limited edition delivers a lot of personality at the brand’s standard entry price.
