Introduction

Montblanc has long been known for its themed pens, and the Writers Edition series sits at the heart of that tradition. Each release is built around a specific literary figure, and the Homage to the Brothers Grimm is one of the most symbolically rich examples to date. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were 19th-century German authors and lexicographers, best known for collecting and publishing European folktales such as Snow White, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, and Sleeping Beauty. Their work was driven by the conviction that a national identity for Germany could be found within popular culture and everyday people.

This pen is a limited edition, and once the initial run sells out, it will not be reproduced in this form. Montblanc destroys the manufacturing tools developed for each Writers Edition and Great Characters pen after the initial production run, making reproduction effectively impossible. If the design speaks to you, it is worth acting before stock disappears.

Packaging and First Impressions

The pen arrives in packaging that resembles a hardcover book, complete with printed page edges on the sides and a dust jacket. The box slides out to reveal the pen, a user guide, and a manual. Montblanc puts genuine effort into the presentation for these special editions, and it makes the purchase feel genuinely special rather than like a standard pen dropped into a generic box.

Design and Symbolism

There is a lot going on with this pen, and nearly every element carries meaning. The overall shape resembles a wooden walking stick, a tribute to the wandering storytellers who traveled from village to village telling their tales. The cap and barrel are made from black precious resin, with the majority of the trim in ruthenium, which creates a darker, more sinister and enchanted mood fitting for fairy tale forests.

The cap top carries the traditional white star logo and resembles a bulbous handle at the top of that walking stick. One side shows the company name, while the other displays the limited edition number and serial number. Around the top of the clip, the words “Göttingen Seven” and the years 1838 to 1971 appear. These reference two separate things: the Göttingen Seven, a group of liberal professors at the University of Göttingen who protested the annulment of the German Constitution by King Ernest Augustus and were ultimately dismissed, with three of them, including Jacob Grimm, exiled from the Kingdom of Hanover; and the German Dictionary, the monumental lexicographic project the brothers began in 1838 to explain every German word used in the previous 250 years. They only got as far as the letter F, and the final volume was published in 1971, completed by many contributors.

The clip itself is platinum coated and shaped like a gnarled root, referencing how the brothers traced the roots of language back to its origins. If you twist the pen just right, the clip reveals the silhouettes of both Brothers Grimm, a genuinely unique feature. The wave-like pattern on the cap and barrel is inspired by the long flowing hair of Rapunzel, who is also represented with a large letter R on the cap. Jacob Grimm’s signature appears on the cap, while Wilhelm Grimm’s signature is on the barrel. At the end of the cap, a ruthenium band carries the German phrase “Es war einmal,” which translates to “Once Upon a Time.”

The barrel is fairly straight, and at the end sits an elongated piston knob shaped like a spindle, a nod to several Grimm tales. Around the base of the knob is an engraving referencing the twelfth fairy tale in the original 1812 release of Children’s and Household Tales, which was Rapunzel.

Nib and Writing Performance

The cap twists off with one and a half rotations to reveal an 18k rhodium-coated gold nib. Montblanc does an excellent job with unique stampings across this series, and this one features burning flames, echoing the tradition of stories told around a fire as well as the role flames play in many folktales. The nib is available in extra fine, fine, medium, broad, and double broad, plus oblique medium, oblique broad, and oblique double broad.

The section is ruthenium-coated metal and begins with a slight flare, angling up only slightly before reaching the cap threads and a small step up to the barrel. Despite being metal, the section does not feel slick thanks to that reduced angle. The section is not overly long, so a grip may spill over onto the threads, but they are neither sharp nor uncomfortable. The pen is long enough to use unposted, which is fortunate because it is not designed to post.

It is a piston filler with a decent ink capacity, and the piston mechanism operates smoothly. On the medium nib tested, ink flow is rather generous, and the feed keeps up very well even during fast writing. A bit of flex is available if you push the nib. Reverse writing is a little scratchy but still gets the job done. Overall, this is an outstanding nib, and Montblanc has a strong reputation for nibs on their Writers Editions.

Size, Measurements, and Comparisons

Side-by-side comparisons show the pen alongside the Montblanc Alfred Hitchcock, the Montblanc 149, the Montblanc 146, and the Montblanc StarWalker, as well as non-Montblanc pens such as the Pilot Custom 845, the Pelikan M1000, and the Platinum Izumo. It sits comfortably in that size range, long enough for unposted use.

For the writing sample, a medium nib was paired with a limited edition Montblanc ink in a bluish-green shade, noticeably bluer than some competing petrol-toned inks from other brands. The nib performed beautifully across the sample, with the feed keeping pace throughout.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The pen is not designed to post, so if you prefer posting your cap while writing, this is not the pen for you. The section is short enough that your grip may rest on the threads, though they are comfortable. At a retail price of around $1,350 depending on the euro to dollar exchange rate, this is a significant investment that makes most sense for collectors and enthusiasts.

Buying Advice

If you are a fan of fairy tales or the Brothers Grimm, this is a very attractive offering. The build quality is high, and the abundance of symbolism and meaning built into every element makes it genuinely rewarding to study. Because it is a limited edition and will not be reproduced once sold out, waiting carries real risk if this design resonates with you.

Conclusion

The Montblanc Writers Edition Homage to the Brothers Grimm is a beautifully executed pen with an outstanding nib, a smooth piston filler, and one of the most thoughtful symbolic designs in the Writers Edition series. It rewards close inspection at every angle, from the hidden silhouettes in the clip to the spindle-shaped piston knob. For collectors who value meaning as much as performance, it is easy to recommend.
