Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro 3 First Run Review: A Marathon Race Shoe With More Roll
First impressions of the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro 3, a bouncy carbon-infused race shoe redesigned for longer distance racing.
Introduction
The Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro 3 is a performance racing shoe built for runners chasing faster times over long-distance events. Priced at £210 or $250, it weighs 222g (7.8oz) for men in a size 8 and has a 4mm heel-to-toe drop. This first run review covers the changes Mizuno has made, how the shoe feels out of the door, and who it is likely to suit.
What the Wave Rebellion Pro 3 Is Designed To Do
Mizuno positions this shoe firmly at runners targeting a sub-2:30 marathon. The latest version has been modified specifically for endurance events, with a wider landing platform and the brand’s soft, bouncy nitrogen-infused MUNZO ENERZY XP midsole foam. The combination of that foam, a smooth speed-assist geometry for optimal gait and efficiency, and a carbon-infused Wave plate delivers what Mizuno describes as a high level of energy return.
The shoe also features a breathable mesh upper and a G3 outsole designed to be lightweight while still providing good grip on road surfaces. Although the stack height is measured from heel to forefoot, there is a much thicker section of midsole foam in the middle of the shoe, which is central to how it rolls you forward.

Fit and Sizing
This is a race shoe, and it is designed to be as light as possible, which generally means a lean fit on the top of the foot. In a UK size 8, the fit is quite snug through the midsection, with fair space in the toe box but not much room elsewhere. On a first run it felt comfortable, but runners with wider feet, or those between sizes, may find it tight.
One quirk of the aggressive geometry is that the shoe pushes you forward as you run, so the foot slides further down the shoe than in most other models, bringing you closer to the toe section. There is not a lot of playroom there, so going up half a size to gain a little extra space in the forefoot is a sensible suggestion.
First Run Impressions
The first run was a fartlek interval session of around 11k, testing paces from about 5:30 min/km up to 4:15 min/km, roughly marathon pace. The new ENERZY XP midsole foam is noticeably bouncier and slightly denser than the previous version, compressing and giving energy back in a way you feel from the very first steps.

The biggest structural change is a much wider base. The previous model had a large cutout running the full length of the outsole; the Pro 3 removes that, keeping a section at the back only, and widens the front of the shoe for a broader platform to land on. The fulcrum area has also moved back, so the shoe tips you forward far more than version 2. At slower paces you get a pleasant bounce and roll, but at marathon pace the forward tilt is strong and it is genuinely hard to run slowly in this shoe. Without even trying, the paces were sitting well below normal easy-run speeds, and that geometry is the reason.
Stability: Still the Weak Point
The wider front section does make landings feel a little more stable up front, but the rear of the shoe is another story. Overall, this is not a stable shoe, and on anything other than completely flat roads it demands attention. Landing on the rear section feels wobbly, and despite Mizuno’s efforts to add stability, the shoe is a long way off what you would want if steadiness is your priority.
Who Should Buy It
The Wave Rebellion Pro 3 is aimed at elites and fast runners, not someone planning to jog a 3:30 marathon. If you are hitting faster paces and want a shoe that helps you maintain them across a half or full marathon, the aggressive rocker and bouncy foam work in your favour. The earlier versions were excellent for 5k and 10k but were awkward over longer distances, bouncing rather than rolling forward. This version tries to fix exactly that, and the wider base and livelier foam look like smart improvements.

If stability is what you want from a race shoe, look elsewhere. For runners chasing fast, long-distance times and willing to accept a demanding ride, this is a compelling option worth keeping on the shortlist for a spring marathon.
Conclusion
The Wave Rebellion Pro 3 changes the character of the line in a meaningful way. The wider landing platform, more rearward fulcrum, and softer, denser ENERZY XP foam make it more conducive to longer-distance racing, tipping you forward and keeping pace up without requiring you to force speed. It remains aggressive and unstable, so it will not suit everyone, but as an improvement over the previous version it is a clear step forward for runners targeting fast marathon efforts.
