Milwaukee M18 JS2000 Hot Shot Jump Starter Review
A jump starter built on Milwaukee's M18 battery platform with chemical resistance, override mode, and thousands of claimed jump cycles.
Introduction
The Milwaukee M18 JS2000 Hot Shot Jump Starter is designed to jump start 12V vehicles, and it takes an unusual approach: instead of a built-in battery pack, it runs on the M18 battery platform. That single design choice changes what this tool is and who it makes sense for.
Design and Build
The unit resembles the bottom of a giant battery pack, which is essentially what it is. The rubberized material on the lower body has chemical and oil resistance, so the grip section should not swell when exposed to oils, and the harder plastic on top uses a different composition from a standard battery housing. There is also a small protective shield on the body.
It weighs 3.1 kg, and the handle on top is spring-loaded, which can be mildly annoying when you set it down and it clings to your hand.

How It Works
The front panel carries a power button, a jump button, a light button, and a USB button. Pressing the jump button charges the internal capacitors, which takes roughly 70 seconds, and then a key button delivers the jump. When you connect the clamps to a battery, the display shows the live voltage.
Milwaukee claims up to 70 jump starts from a single 5Ah M18 battery. In practice, that figure only makes sense for small engines; a large diesel will draw far more per jump. The reviewer used it across about five jumps plus light testing before a single battery bar was depleted.

Safety Features
This thing assumes you might get things wrong, and it has the safeguards to match. Reverse the clamps and it beeps and flashes a warning light instead of charging, prompting you to swap the terminals. Touch the clamps together and it throws an E1 error code. On our test car, an E2 error also appeared after a successful start, worth checking in the manual if you see it.
The real trick is override mode. If a battery has dropped below about 1.2 volts, the device cannot detect it and refuses standard mode. Override forces up to 15 volts through the battery on a countdown timer with a constant warning beep. On a car that had been sitting for months with a reading of just 1.3 volts, the first override attempt failed to start the engine but pushed the battery above the cutoff. The second attempt started the car without trouble, using only around 12% of the stored charge.
Powering Your Devices
Beyond jump starting, the USB button activates a USB-C port that delivers 5 volts at up to 3 amps for charging your phone. It works independently of the jump system, so you can top up a device without powering the whole unit for a jump.

There is also a work light on top rated at 500 lumens. It is not super bright, but it offers four modes including an SOS flash, which makes it genuinely useful if you are stuck on the roadside changing a tire or working under the bonnet.
Specs and Capacity
The unit outputs 15 volts at a peak of up to 2,000 amps and is rated to operate between -20°C and 50°C, with indicators that tell you if the temperature is out of range. Milwaukee claims the internal capacitors should last 500,000 charge cycles, which points to a very long service life.
Buying Advice
Because it uses swappable M18 batteries rather than an internal pack, the logic is simple: one battery might give you 70 jumps on a small car, and swapping in another M18 battery could take you past 150. Even leaving a charged battery overnight only saw the stored charge drop to around 60%. You really only need one or two jumps to get out of a pinch.

Note that a very weak battery still drains fast. On the test car, the voltage plummeted back down within moments of shutting the engine off, and the alternator would need a long drive to recharge it. This tool gets you started and home, but it is not a replacement for a healthy battery, and it should not be used to power a car continuously.
Conclusion
The Milwaukee M18 JS2000 Hot Shot Jump Starter is a capable, safety-conscious jump starter with a smart battery platform, a useful override mode for deeply discharged batteries, and a bright enough work light for roadside emergencies. If you already own M18 batteries, it becomes even more compelling.
