Michelle Pashon Metamorphosis Review: A Luxury Fountain Pen Built Around Craft and History
The Metamorphosis marks the return of a luxury pen brand after two decades, pairing rhodium-plated sterling silver with black and white enamel and 24 natural diamonds.
Introduction
Some pens arrive quietly. The Michelle Pashon Metamorphosis does not. It is the first release from a relaunched luxury pen house, limited to 100 units, and it carries the kind of materials and backstory you rarely see at this level of the fountain pen world.
This is not a pen for everyone, and it is not priced to be. But if you have ever wanted a writing instrument that doubles as a collectible art object, the Metamorphosis deserves a closer look.
A Brand with a Complicated History
Michelle Pashon was founded in 1994 and named after Michel Perchin, the head workmaster in the house of Fabergé. Perchin was a craftsman of considerable skill, credited with creative innovation on more than half of the famous Fabergé eggs, including pieces like the Clover Leaf, Lilies of the Valley, and the Coronation egg.
In the 1990s the company produced a small number of luxury pens, the first of them fashioned after Fabergé eggs. The business was sold in the mid-2000s, and within roughly a year it disappeared from the market. Fast forward about 20 years, and Lisa Ericson, daughter of the original owner, has taken control of the brand and brought it back to life. The Metamorphosis is the first release from this revitalized company, and it celebrates that return to the marketplace.
Unboxing and Presentation
The Metamorphosis arrives in a rather large outer box bearing the company logo, which is taken from the Order of the Elephant, Denmark’s highest ranked order of chivalry. It is a fitting reference: Fabergé once hid a small elephant charm inside one of his eggs for a Danish-born Tsarina, an Easter egg in every sense.

Inside you get a polishing cloth, a certificate of authenticity with your limited edition number out of 100, and a wooden box with a push-button latch and felt lining. Beneath the pen, there are 12 blue-black cartridges included as well. The presentation is thorough and clearly designed to feel like an occasion.
Design, Materials, and Fit
The base of the pen is rhodium-plated sterling silver, so it should never need polishing and should stay glossy over time. Over that, black and white opaque enamels form an organic, almost ethereal pattern that suggests something in motion. The idea is a snapshot of evolution, a moment of transition captured in enamel.
Around the clip sits a band of green enamel with a guilloche pattern underneath, and the clip itself, along with the green section, holds a total of 24 natural diamonds, each 2mm wide and graded GH VVS. That is a colorless to near-colorless grade with only microscopic flaws, describing high-quality stones. In practice, the diamonds read as refined rather than gaudy, and the pop of green adds real character to an otherwise monochrome pen.

The band is stamped with the brand name, the limited edition number, and sterling silver hallmarks. The clip is thick and sturdy rather than flexible, so it is more about beauty than performance, and it can be awkward on thinner materials. One small quibble: on this particular example, the clip alignment is off by a millimeter or two relative to the band stamping. It does not affect performance, but on a luxury pen at this level, near-perfect should mean perfect.
The Nib and Writing Experience
The cap twists off in about two and a quarter rotations to reveal a number six, two-toned 18 karat gold Bock nib with a plastic feed. The stamping is genuinely attractive, featuring elephants and an interesting logo, the kind of detail nib enthusiasts notice and appreciate.

In use, the medium 18 karat gold nib is very pleasant. There is a fair amount of decent feedback, so it is not glassy smooth, but it is comfortable and responsive. You can coax a bit of line variation out of it, though pushing hard can cause railroading and a momentary restart hiccup. Ink flow sits on the medium side, the feed keeps up with fast writing, and reverse writing is a little sharp. One minor caveat: after sitting unused for a moment, the nib can exhibit a slight hard start, though once writing it performs consistently well.
Size, Weight, and Everyday Handling
This is a pen with real heft. Depending on the measurement, it lands somewhere in the 80-gram range, and the first thing most people say when handed one is that it is heavy. Importantly, it feels like a quality weight rather than weight for its own sake.

The section is rhodium-plated sterling silver and a bit on the slick side, flaring slightly before rising to metal threads. If you grip close to the end of the section, your fingers naturally settle into that swale, though some texture would have helped with grip. The pen can technically post, but it sits loosely and is not designed for it, which is sensible: you would not want metal constantly contacting that enamel. Compared side by side with oversized pens like a Montblanc 149 or Pelikan M1000, the Metamorphosis holds its own in presence.
Buying Advice
The Metamorphosis sells for $9,800 directly from the Michelle Pashon website, in a limited edition of 100 units. At that price, asking whether a pen is “worth it” misses the point: you are buying a piece of art and a statement, not just a writing tool. The enamel patterning is unique, the diamond work is tasteful rather than ostentatious, and the green guilloche accent is a genuinely nice design decision. For collectors who value craftsmanship, provenance, and rarity, this is a compelling return. For anyone expecting a flawless finish at this price, know that small details like clip alignment should be inspected on arrival.
Conclusion
The Michelle Pashon Metamorphosis is a bold first act for a revived brand. It combines precious materials, genuine craft history, and a distinctive design language into a pen that stands apart from anything else in its class. If your collecting taste runs toward art objects that also write beautifully, this limited edition deserves your attention while it lasts.
