Metabo HPT 36V MultiVolt 2 Gallon Air Compressor Review: Cordless Power for Trim Work

A compact, battery-capable 2 gallon compressor built around fast recovery and pneumatic nailers. Here is how it performs in real testing.

Introduction

Metabo HPT’s new 36V brushless 2 gallon air compressor brings MultiVolt flexibility to a compact jobsite package: run it off the battery, or plug in the AC adapter when outlet power is available. It is clearly optimized for size and recovery time with a pneumatic nailer, and that is exactly the use case where a small compressor either earns its keep or frustrates you.

Design and Build Quality

The compressor has a full roll cage all the way around it, which is one of the best design choices here. It protects the tank and internals when the unit gets knocked around on a jobsite, and the square form factor makes it easy to pack and carry. At a total weight of 27 lb, it is genuinely portable without being awkward to balance when you pick it up.

The battery sits in a dedicated space at the back, and there is a quick release on the side for swapping power. One thing to note: the battery bay is tight. The 4Ah MultiVolt pack takes up essentially the entire area around it, so there is little room for airflow, and the included cooling fan will run fairly often while the battery is inserted, especially since motor heat also builds in that area.

Specs and Controls

The headline numbers:

  • 135 PSI max
  • 1.6 CFM at 90 PSI
  • 2.3 CFM at 40 PSI
  • 2 gallon tank
  • 27 lb total weight

The front panel gives you gauges for everything, and the regulator knob is well thought out: pull it out to adjust, push it down to lock it in place. It is a single-outlet unit, so plan your hose setup accordingly.

Real-World Nail Testing

In testing, the compressor filled from completely empty to the 135 PSI shutoff in 1 minute 21 seconds, which is spot on for a compressor of this size running off a battery. Recovery, measured with a hose connected, came in at 19 seconds against a claimed 17 seconds. Not bad at all, and worth remembering that any connected hose effectively enlarges the tank, which slightly stretches both fill and recovery times.

Running a 16 gauge finish nailer on a short hose, the compressor fired approximately eight nails before needing to recover, followed by that 19 second recovery window. For trim work, that is barely noticeable in practice. Metabo HPT claims up to 1,000 nails per 4Ah MultiVolt battery, which makes cordless finish work entirely practical.

What It Can and Cannot Run

This is where expectations need to be managed. You must stay within 1.6 CFM at 90 PSI or 2.3 CFM at 40 PSI, and any tool you connect will list its own requirement. An airbrush is plausible; a paint sprayer is not realistic on a 2 gallon tank. Draining tests show the tank releases air quickly: from a full, switched-off unit, an air gun blew it down past 60 PSI in seconds and below 20 PSI shortly after. With high-draw tools the compressor would kick on and run constantly, so impact wrenches and similar tools are out of the question.

Where it does make sense: filling car tires, blowout work like cleaning computers in an office setting, and above all trim nailing. Just make sure to check the SCFM requirement of whatever tool you plan to connect before buying.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The regulator knob itself works excellently, but when the unit runs it vibrates a bit more than expected. It is not a functional problem, just a refinement miss. There is also minimal storage: no cord wrap beyond the lower cage area, and no compartments for fittings or accessories, though almost no compact competitor offers that either.

Noise is genuinely good for the category. Thick, effective rubber feet let the cage and internals settle, damping vibration and quieting things down considerably. It is not in the same class as quiet plug-in California Air Tools units, but it is quieter than most battery compressors on the market, and you can comfortably talk over it on a jobsite.

The choice to stop at 135 PSI rather than pushing to 200 PSI is a sensible one for an oil-free unit: higher fill pressures stretch the window above 90 PSI but also extend recovery time significantly.

Buying Advice

If your work revolves around trim nailers, this compressor is an easy recommendation. It is compact, well protected, quick to recover, and the MultiVolt battery option means you can work anywhere without hunting for an outlet. If you need to run sprayers or high-CFM tools, look at a larger tank instead.

Conclusion

Metabo HPT has put together one of the strongest designs in the compact compressor category: a square, roll-caged, 27 lb unit with fast recovery, good noise control, and real cordless flexibility. For finish carpentry and light inflation tasks, it is easy to carry, easy to use, and hard to fault.
