Li-Ning Feidian 3 Ultra Racing Review: A High-Stack Racer With a Distinct Feel

A first look at the Li-Ning Feidian 3 Ultra Racing, a Pebax-based foam racer with a carbon plate and a cushioned, high-stack ride that surprises more than it shouts.

Introduction

Li-Ning is a Chinese sportswear manufacturer that seems to be at the top of its game right now, with Chinese runners posting strong race times and athletes from Ethiopia and Western African countries winning races in its shoes. The Feidian 3 Ultra Racing is the brand’s top-tier racing shoe, and this was a first hands-on with it.

The naming is a little hard to parse, and nearly everything on the shoe is branded under what Li-Ning calls “Boom Technology.” Still, the fundamentals are interesting: a big stack of Pebax-based Boom foam, a carbon plate with an unusual curved forefoot, and a weight of around 8.15 oz (237 g) in a men’s size 10.5, which puts it in the same territory as the Nike Alphafly.

Midsole and Plate: All About That Boom Foam

The headline feature is the thick Boom foam midsole, which Li-Ning describes as Pebax-based. Inside sits a carbon fiber plate, and the most distinctive detail is the bubble-like forefoot geometry that curves and scoops upward under the toes, a design cue that invites comparison to the Alphafly.

Walking around in the shoe, the exaggerated pop under the toe is very noticeable. During the run, it was less pronounced than expected. Instead, the ride leaned closer to the Adidas Prime X: high stacked, highly cushioned, and plush, even though this shoe is not as tall as the Prime X. The foam feels light and responsive, and the overall experience is one of comfort rather than aggressive toe-off snap.

Upper: A Surprise Fit

The upper uses what the brand calls Boom Fiber, a spun plastic-based material with a little stretch but not too much. The tongue design felt odd at first and raised doubts during lacing, but the fit turned out to be a genuine surprise. Comfort was so unremarkable in the best way that it only came up when consciously thinking about it late in the run.

One caveat worth flagging: the platform is slim. The forefoot is narrow, the throat is not wide, and the heel is modest. If you like a big, wide base underfoot, this is probably not your shoe. For runners who prefer a sleek, snug racer cut close to the foot, it is a strong match. Grip from the rubber outsole also felt good during the first runs.

Things to Consider Before Buying

Aesthetically, the upper’s knit-like design divides opinion, reading a bit like a sweater, and some may prefer the styling of Li-Ning’s other models. The bigger practical question is the ride character: the hoped-for toe-off pop did not fully materialize, so this shoe rewards runners who prioritize cushioning over snap.

Availability is also a consideration. Li-Ning is not stocked everywhere, so sourcing may mean going through online marketplaces or import channels. Pricing is on the expensive end, with this model thought to be close to $300.

Buying Advice

Although it could serve as a race-day shoe, one tester preferred to reserve it for faster training sessions and would pick one of Li-Ning’s lighter, more traditional models for racing. If you want a highly cushioned, high-stack racer with a unique, comfortable feel and you are not chasing maximum propulsive pop, the Feidian 3 Ultra Racing is worth a look. If you want a wide, stable platform or a snappier toe-off, look elsewhere.

Conclusion

The Li-Ning Feidian 3 Ultra Racing is an intriguing first impression from a brand clearly competing at the top level: excellent comfort, a sleek fit, light and responsive Pebax-based foam, and an unusual carbon plate design. It is not the Alpha-fly-style pop machine its forefoot suggests, and it is expensive and harder to find, but for runners who enjoy a plush, high-stack ride in a sleek racer, it is a compelling option.
