Leonardo Momento Zero Grande SBRE Brown Canadian Winter: A Limited-Edition Fountain Pen Worth Knowing About

A handmade Leonardo fountain pen with a custom winter-inspired material, ruthenium trim, 14k broad nib, and a limited run of 88 numbered pens.

Introduction

Every so often a fountain pen comes along with a story attached, and the Leonardo Momento Zero Grande SBRE Brown “Canadian Winter” is one of them. It is the second SBRE Brown collaboration pen made by Leonardo, handmade in Italy, and built around a custom resin created to capture a specific moment: a misty Canadian winter morning with the sun rising over snow.

The run is strictly limited. The first eight pens are engraved 1 through 8 out of 8, and the remaining pens are engraved 9 out of 88 up to 88 out of 88, for a total run of 88. At launch, only a handful of pens were in stock immediately, with the rest produced over roughly a month in the same material, by the same pen maker, with the same nib style.

Who This Pen Is For

This is a pen for fountain pen enthusiasts who appreciate handmade materials, limited editions, and larger-but-not-oversized pens. The Momento Zero Grande 2.0 is a bigger pen than a standard model, but it is not obscenely large, so it should fit most hands comfortably. It is also for writers who enjoy a broad, wet nib with character, and collectors who like the story behind a pen as much as the pen itself. If limited-edition numbering or collaborative design does not appeal to you, there are plenty of standard production Leonardos to consider instead.

Main Strengths

The material is the headline. The custom resin mixes brown, green, orange, and a mother-of-pearl quality that genuinely evokes a snowy, misty sunrise. Because it is handmade, every pen in the run looks slightly different, which is part of the charm. The depth of the material catches the light beautifully and resembles snow-capped mountains seen from a distance.

Trim is ruthenium throughout, a deliberate choice after gold, rhodium, and rose gold were considered and rejected for clashing with the material. You get the classic Leonardo clip with its little wheel, three rings on the cap, a fourth ring, a matching ruthenium piston turning knob, and a ruthenium-coated 14k broad nib. The section is made from the same material as the body, which keeps the pen visually continuous, and there is an ink window so you can see exactly how much ink remains in the piston reservoir, which holds roughly 1.5 ml.

Piston maintenance is thoughtfully handled. Two grooves on the turning knob allow the piston unit to be disassembled with the separately sold Leonardo wrench for greasing or thorough cleaning. The ebonite feed keeps up with ink flow very well, and the cap posts securely if you prefer writing posted.

The Material

Jonathan Brooks created the material, and Leonardo makes the pen, but the inspiration came from a photograph of a misty winter sunrise in Canada. The palette mixes snow, mist, and low sun into something soft and hazy, and the finished resin genuinely looks the part. The swirling pattern reads differently depending on the light, from deep brown to pale pearlescent highlights with green and orange accents running through.

Because the material is handmade, no two pens are identical. That is worth knowing before buying: the pen you receive will have its own pattern and swirl distribution, which most collectors consider a feature rather than a flaw.

Build and Design Details

On the back of the cap there is a blind engraving identifying Leonardo and the edition number. The SBRE Brown logo, a jumping fox with a music nib as its tail, appears on the cap. Threads on the section are smooth and comfortable to hold, with no sharp edges. The section tapers down and flares slightly, and the overall finish is what you would expect from a workshop with more than 45 years of pen-making experience.

How It Writes

The nib is a 14k broad with a ruthenium coating, paired with an ebonite feed. Out of the box, it wrote very pleasantly with a notably wet flow, certainly not a dry writer. Broad nibs like this sometimes carry a slight hint of stub character, with slightly narrower side strokes than downstrokes, and this one had the faintest tinge of that, though it is not dramatic.

The ruthenium coating extends onto the tipping, which creates a distinct type of feedback rather than the glassy smoothness of an uncoated nib. Think of it as closer to a Sailor-style feedback. It remains a very smooth and pleasant writer, and over time the coating on the tipping tends to wear, which typically shifts the writing feel and becomes smoother. Reverse writing is doable, moving from a broad to roughly an extra-fine line, and it is not scratchy in that mode. Nothing was tuned or adjusted before writing; this was straight out of the box.

Things to Consider Before Buying

A few practical points deserve attention before committing. The piston wrench is a separate purchase, not included, which is a small annoyance if you want full disassembly capability from day one. The edition numbering may divide opinion: the first eight pens are engraved 1 to 8, while the rest of the 88-pen run carries its number out of 88, so the engraving does not tell the whole production story on its own.

Price was listed as to be determined at launch, and availability is handled by a single seller, so stock levels may fluctuate. This run is Grandes only; there are no regular-size Momento Zero pens in this material.

Open presentation box with a fountain pen resting on soft lining

The presentation is generous: a large, thick box with a soft interior, a full-color booklet covering the brand’s history, a guarantee booklet, a pen medallion, and a bottle of Leonardo blue ink. An SBRE Brown ink was considered but could not be included this time.

Buying Advice

If the material speaks to you, move reasonably quickly when stock is open. Seven pens were available immediately at launch, with the remainder arriving over about a month. Because the run tops out at 88 pens and the material cannot be reproduced exactly, later availability is uncertain. Choose this pen for the material, the handmade character, and the wet 14k broad nib, not as a value play, since the custom material and limited run add cost by design.

Conclusion

The Leonardo Momento Zero Grande SBRE Brown “Canadian Winter” is a charming, well-built limited edition that captures a very specific winter scene in resin. With its ruthenium trim, ebonite feed, disassemblable piston, and characterful 14k broad nib, it rewards enthusiasts who value story, material, and writing feel. If you are drawn to handmade materials and collaborative editions, this one deserves a spot on your shortlist.
