Lamy Dialog CC Fountain Pen Review: A Premium Retractable That Earns Its Look

A matte dark blue, rose gold trimmed retractable fountain pen with a smooth gold broad nib, a solid retraction mechanism, and a smaller, more refined build than its predecessor.

Introduction

Retractable fountain pens occupy a small and interesting corner of the market, and the Lamy Dialog CC is one of the more intriguing entries in a while. This review looks at the dark blue version, a pen that manages to feel both modern and quietly elegant at the same time.

First Impressions and Design

The Dialog CC ships in a fairly large presentation box with paperwork, a small tool for unscrewing the front barrel section, and a Lamy cartridge sample. A leather sleeve is also included, and while it is a snug fit and the black color does little for the dark blue pen, it is a practical bonus for carrying the pen around.

Out of the box, the matte dark blue finish with a slight metallic sheen and rose gold trim genuinely stands out. The rear of the barrel features a shiny rose gold dome, and where a clip would normally sit there is a small plaque instead. Compared with previous premium Lamy colorways, this finish feels more cohesive and more interesting. It is not a large pen either, coming in at under six inches, which places it on the smaller side even next to entry-level pens.

Compared with the older Dialog 3, this new version feels like a clear step forward in both design and how it sits in hand. The stopping mechanism is also much improved: on the older model, retracting the nib could let the barrel unscrew, but here the stop feels solid and you know immediately when the nib is retracted.

Ink System and Maintenance

Unscrewing the barrel reveals a Lamy Z 27 converter that is screwed into place. You unscrew that converter to fill the pen, and the included tool lets you remove the front barrel section for a proper cleaning and drying afterwards.

Needing an extra part just to clean the pen is a small annoyance, but including the tool for full maintenance is a thoughtful touch. The overall feel of the internals, the unscrewing action, and the closing tension all feel more satisfying than on the older Dialog 3.

Writing Performance

The nib on this unit is a gold broad, and it delivers exactly the kind of writing experience a broad nib should. It is smooth, juicy, and a true broad rather than a medium-broad or an overly wide grind. It feels well tuned and well adjusted, with no over-polishing, and it performed consistently across different papers with no issues.

Comfort is another strong point. The pen is girthier than a typical pen, but the weight and balance make it easy to hold for long writing sessions. It simply works well for a relaxed, natural grip.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The price sits at 368 Canadian dollars, which is a real investment. That said, considering that Lamy 2000 special editions were selling in the 500 to 600 Canadian dollar range, the pricing does not feel unreasonable for a premium retractable. The included leather sleeve is divisive, and anyone who prefers a bottle of ink in the box may be slightly disappointed. The smaller overall size will also not suit writers who prefer oversized pens, though it is a direct answer to the much larger Dialog 3.

Who Should Consider Buying It

The Dialog CC makes the most sense for writers who want a retractable mechanism in a premium package that looks and feels a little different from the usual suspects. It is particularly appealing if you enjoy juicy gold broad nibs, value solid build quality and balance, or simply like the matte dark blue and rose gold look.

Conclusion

The Lamy Dialog CC is an easy pen to underestimate from afar and a hard one to put down in hand. With a killer colorway, a solid retraction mechanism, a beautiful gold broad nib, and thoughtful maintenance provisions, it is a genuinely compelling option for anyone shopping in the premium retractable fountain pen space.
