Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus Review: A Compact Whole Home Backup Power Station
The Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus packs a 5 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, a 7200 W split-phase inverter, and a surprisingly compact footprint. Here is how it performs under real load.
Introduction
Portable power stations have come a long way. What started as small camping generators has evolved into massive whole home backup systems capable of running major appliances for days. The Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus represents the current flagship of that evolution, packing a 5 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and a 7200 W pure sine wave inverter into a surprisingly compact, wheeled chassis.
This is the biggest and most capable unit Jackery has ever made, and it certainly feels like it. Weighing in at 135 lb and measuring 25 inches tall by 15.5 inches wide and 16.5 inches deep, it is designed to be rolled around rather than carried. The extra inch of depth accommodates the wheels that stick out at the back.
The question on everyone’s mind is whether this flagship lives up to the hype. After extensive testing, the answer is nuanced. There are genuine strengths here, from excellent RF shielding to a whisper quiet inverter, but there are also some notable weaknesses, particularly around idle power consumption and battery calibration. Let’s dig into the details.
Design and Build
The Explorer 5000 Plus has a typical modern Jackery display that offers input and output wattage, time to charge and discharge, battery percentage, and more than a dozen indicator icons. The unit includes both high and low temperature protection, so the battery should not be damaged in extreme conditions.

The compact form factor is a huge win. None of the competition offers something this small, portable, and powerful with a chunky 5 kWh battery built in. It can be easily wheeled around on its own, whereas competitors often require dollies, carts, or snap-on wheels, and some offer nothing at all for mobility.
The unit is also remarkably quiet. Even under high loads, the fans measure around 43 to 44 dB from a meter away, which is very quiet for the amount of power being drawn. It is not the quietest power station ever tested at this size, but it is definitely in the top three.
Outputs and Connectivity
The Explorer 5000 Plus has a massive 7200 W pure sine wave inverter with a big trick up its sleeve. It offers both 240 volt split phase and standard 120 volt outlets that work simultaneously, which is unlike much of the competition.
On the front, you get four 20 amp standard outlets split into two pairs. Each pair supports up to 3600 watts, with a maximum of 2400 watts per outlet. On the side, there is a 240 volt NEMA 14-30R four-prong twist lock receptacle and a 240 volt NEMA 14-50 that doubles as both a 50 amp RV hookup and a 50 amp appliance hookup. This means you can plug in an electric oven, electric dryer, or 240 volt well pump and power them easily. You can also charge an EV with a level two charger if you are inclined to do so.

It is important to understand how the inverter works. This is a split phase 240 volt inverter only. Unlike many other power stations that have separate 120 volt and 240 volt inverters, this unit only has a 240 volt inverter that is split into two 120 volt circuits. The two front outlets on one side are on one circuit, and the two on the other side are on the other circuit. When combined through the side receptacle, they deliver 240 volts. This is why the unit is designed to be paired with Jackery’s smart transfer switch.
For 12 volt outputs, there is a single cigarette lighter style socket good for running something like a 12 volt fridge. It supports up to 10 amps and is regulated at 13.2 volts. For USB, there is a pair of 100 W USB-C power delivery outputs and a pair of 18 W Quick Charge USB-A ports. During testing, both USB-C ports delivered around 96 watts each simultaneously.
Charging Flexibility
The Explorer 5000 Plus offers multiple ways to charge. From standard 120 volt grid power, it charges at 1800 watts, filling the built-in battery in about 3.5 hours. If you opt for the Jackery smart transfer switch, you can charge with 240 volt split phase at 4000 watts, topping up in only 1.7 hours. Note that the transfer switch is the only way to charge with 240 volts; there is no special adapter cable, and it is written right on the side: 120 volts only.
For solar, the unit has two MPPT solar controllers with three inputs. The low voltage solar inputs are a pair of standard Jackery proprietary 8 mm barrel plugs wired in parallel, supporting 16 to 60 volts at 10 to 12 amps each, or combined at 21 amps for a maximum of 1200 watts of solar. If you use two of Jackery’s new 500 watt portable panels plugged into the low PV ports, they will charge the unit in about 6.5 hours under ideal conditions.

For the first time in Jackery’s history, the unit offers standard built-in MC4 connectors for a high voltage solar input. This supports from 135 volts all the way up to 400 volts of solar, so you can plug in any basic solar panels without adapters. The catch is that you need enough solar panels in series to reach the minimum of 135 volts to start charging. At 135 volts, you can only send in 2000 watts at 15 amps. To reach the 4000 watt maximum, you want to stack panels to get around 200 volts, where the MPPT really kicks in. At that rate, solar charging takes just under 2 hours.
In testing, the low voltage input delivered around 1150 watts at 60 volts, close to the 1200 watt rating. The high voltage MC4 input delivered a solid 3000 watts at 206 volts in testing, limited only by the test charger. The unit does not officially support 12 volt charging from a vehicle, but testing showed it actually works at 100 watts through the low voltage PV input, which is ridiculously slow but possible.
Simultaneous charging from AC and solar works well. In testing, the unit accepted around 4100 watts combined, slightly above the rated 4000 watt maximum.
Real World Performance
The Explorer 5000 Plus was put through a battery of tests in the lab. For AC capacity, the 120 volt test scored 4450 watt hours for a solid 88% efficiency, while the 240 volt test scored a virtually identical 4440 watt hours. This result was not surprising, as the unit does not run two separate inverter circuits. The inverter only does 240 volt split phase, running the split legs all the time, exactly like the circuit breaker box in your home.

The phantom load or parasitic drain test revealed a significant weakness. The unit used 515 watt hours over 6 hours, or a whopping 2600 watt hours over a 24 hour period. That works out to about 85 watts just to have the inverter turned on with nothing plugged in. If left on, it would completely kill the battery in under 2.5 days. This is a major concern for a home backup system. By comparison, the EcoFlow Delta Pro Ultra, which also has a 7200 watt 240 volt inverter, uses only 52 watts at idle. Jackery needs to work on that idle consumption.
The DC side fared much better. Running both the 12 volt and USB outputs at idle with nothing plugged in for 12 hours used zero power. Jackery has always had some of the best DC circuitry, with regulated circuitry that masters idle consumption.
Inverter capacity testing showed the unit can handle serious loads. On a single 120 volt circuit, it delivered 4800 watts before shutting off, right where it should be. For the full 7200 watt test, the unit ran at 9300 watts for close to 10 seconds before tripping, which is impressive. In a sustained 5 minute heat soak test at 7200 watts balanced across both circuits, the unit performed flawlessly, with fans staying quiet at around 43 to 44 dB.
The pure sine wave output was clean. Under load from the front outlets, there was a perfect 120 volt 60 Hz signal, and for 240 volts, 238 volts at 60 Hz. The inverter also passed the amplifier interference test with crystal clean output, and the AM radio interference test showed very little if any interference. The EMF test showed extremely low readings, some of the lowest ever seen, indicating excellent shielding.
The unit offers two UPS modes. Backup mode is the standard mode found in most power stations, using a relay to switch from wall power to battery power when the grid goes out. Online UPS mode runs off the battery all the time with zero millisecond switching. In testing, backup mode kept a desktop PC running through multiple power outages without issue. However, in online mode, the 240 volt outlets are completely disabled, and the four 120 volt outlets are limited to 3600 watts total, making it a 3600 watt inverter instead of 7200 watts.
The app is basic but functional, working on both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. There are two charging modes: fast and quiet. Quiet mode reduces the charge rate to 1400 watts and noise to around 42 to 43 dB. The main issue is that the Wi-Fi disconnects itself frequently, which is frustrating when trying to remotely monitor the unit.
Battery Expansion
The Explorer 5000 Plus supports battery expansion through a port on the side, allowing you to add up to 60 kilowatt hours of batteries, or 3 days of powering all loads in the average American home. Up to five 5 kWh expansion batteries can be chained to one unit. If you opt for the smart transfer switch, you can hook up a second Explorer 5000 Plus with another five batteries to reach that 60 kWh maximum.
The expansion batteries are very compact, simple, and easy to hook up. They use lithium iron phosphate chemistry, so they are safe. However, there are some design quirks. The included cable is only about a foot long, and the batteries do not stack with the main unit. They can only fit next to it, and they cannot be rolled around if connected. You literally have to disconnect all the batteries and carry them around separately to move to another location.
A more serious issue emerged during testing. When connecting an expansion battery with a different charge level, the main unit did not recalibrate its percentage display. The main screen showed 63% even though the expansion battery was at 30%. Even the app did not calculate the extra battery in its calculations. This is a significant problem for a whole home backup system, as you need to know the total power available across all batteries.
Buying Advice
The Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus is currently on sale for $3499, which works out to 69 cents per watt hour or 49 cents per watt. In the past, Jackery units typically launched at 80 cents to a dollar per watt hour, making this a solid deal for a flagship product.
Compared to the competition, the EcoFlow Delta Pro Ultra is $1150 more, and the Bluetti AC500 with 5500 watt hours of batteries and two inverters is $500 more. All three offer similar 5 year warranties, so it really comes down to features and form factor.
The Jackery has by far the smallest footprint in almost every dimension, and it is probably the lightest when you factor in the built-in battery. If you need your power to remain mobile, the Jackery is the easy winner. However, when you add a bunch of extra batteries, you lose that mobility because there is no way to wheel them all around together.
This is the best option if you need something really compact that can run all the major loads in your home, or power a remote cabin, boat, RV, or campsite. Just do not get it wet, as it has no waterproofing ability whatsoever, and the side outlets are not even covered.
Conclusion
The Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus is a mixed bag. On one hand, it is a fantastic product with a very quiet inverter, some of the best RF shielding ever seen, and a compact form factor that none of the competition matches. On the other hand, the inverter consumes an insane 85 watts at idle, the app is janky with frequent Wi-Fi disconnects, and the battery expansion system does not calibrate properly.
For those who need a compact, powerful, and mobile home backup solution, the Explorer 5000 Plus is a compelling option. The 7200 watt split phase inverter can handle major appliances, the solar charging flexibility with standard MC4 connectors is a huge win, and the whisper quiet operation is a genuine pleasure. Just be aware of the idle power draw and the battery calibration issue before committing to a full expansion setup.
