BLUETTI Charger 2 Review: A 1200W DC-to-DC Charger for Van Life and Overlanding

The BLUETTI Charger 2 combines 800W alternator charging with 600W solar input for a 1200W total, but compatibility and price deserve a closer look.

Introduction

The BLUETTI Charger 2 is a DC-to-DC battery charger designed to be installed in a 12 or 24-volt vehicle with an alternator. It takes power from your vehicle’s starter battery, converts it to 48 volts, and uses it to directly charge a BLUETTI power station or compatible battery. This version also combines a 600-watt solar input with an 800-watt alternator input, allowing simultaneous charging from both sources to reach a 1200-watt maximum.

What Is the BLUETTI Charger 2?

The Charger 2 is a DC-to-DC battery charger meant to be installed on a 12 or 24-volt vehicle with an alternator. It takes the 12 or 24 volts from your vehicle starter battery and converts it to 48 volts for direct charging of a BLUETTI power station or most of their power stations.

This version combines a 600-watt solar input with an 800-watt alternator charger input so that you can charge with both alternator and solar simultaneously in order to reach that 1200-watt maximum. When you convert one voltage to another, there is always some loss. The Charger 2 does consume some power, and there are other losses as well.

Who This Product Is For

The Charger 2 is mostly designed to charge BLUETTI products, but it can charge any power station with a solar input rated anywhere from 12 to 56 volts. That covers most power stations from virtually every brand. A few models that require over 60 volts will not work with the Charger 2.

It is designed for more modern power stations that support either MC4 input or XT60. You can use an adapter from MC4 to 8mm if you want to charge something like a Jackery or an older BLUETTI that used a 7909 or 8mm barrel plug input.

The Charger 2 really shines when plugged into the battery port of select BLUETTI power stations, such as the new Apex 300, the AC200L, the AC200 Max, or batteries such as the B300K, B500K, B300, or B230. Additional cables for other BLUETTI products are planned for the near future.

Key Features and Design

The Charger 2 supports the BLUETTI app, and the app is essentially required for using the product. You can set it up with the app and then uninstall it if you prefer, letting the Charger 2 operate on its own. Once configured for your vehicle, there is not much else to do except for one feature called reverse charging.

Reverse charging lets you take power from your power station and put it back into your vehicle starter battery if you accidentally drain it. This is not a jump starter but more of a trickle charger. You might have to wait 20 minutes to a half hour to start your vehicle, but it is better than being stranded. The trickle charge is only about 100 watts or 8 amps.

If you need a 50-amp direct DC output, 12-volt car sockets, or USB outputs from the Charger 2, you can purchase the Hub D1 accessory that plugs directly into the Charger 2. This accessory expands the unit’s capabilities, but it is expensive. Most folks who need a 12-volt output will simply plug into their BLUETTI power station or the 12-volt car battery itself.

Performance Testing

During bench testing, the Charger 2 worked well with an AC200L using the direct battery connection. It immediately started charging when plugged in, pumping in around 643 watts with 724 watts coming from the battery. The silent charging feature reduces output to about 250 watts and shuts off the fans.

One notable issue is that the display does not show charging information. The numbers remain at zero, and the only indication that charging is happening is the time-to-full estimate. This seems like a bug that should be fixed, as it gives no clear feedback that power is flowing.

The fan noise is also worth noting. The spec sheet says 50 dB max, but testing from a meter away showed closer to 54 dB. The fan sounds like a hairdryer when running at full output.

The Charger 2 did not work with either of two B230 batteries during testing, even with the latest firmware on both the charger and the batteries. The batteries would detect in the app but would not take a charge from the Charger 2. This may be because the B230s were early release models, but there is no clear answer as to why they would not work.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The smart alternator cable is not included with the Charger 2. This cable senses positive power from your fuse box and forces the charger to stay on even when the alternator turns off to save fuel. Without it, the Charger 2 may stop charging while you are driving because it only senses the voltage from your battery.

This cable is not available or in stock until May or possibly June. People on forums have been making their own cables, which is not ideal for a product at this price point.

The Charger 2 typically sells for $349. A discount code can knock 5% off that price. BLUETTI also runs spring sales where the price drops to $331, and with the discount code, it could be around $315.

Buying Advice

The Charger 2 is a fast charger, and 1200 watts is no joke, but it is really only an 800-watt charger from the alternator itself. Anyone can buy a $50 solar controller, wire 600 watts of panels directly to their car battery, and get the same result as the extra solar feature on this unit. The solar charging capability is more of a convenience feature than a real necessity.

The price is a hard sell in 2026 because the market is full of alternator chargers. Competitors offer similar products for less, with some basic chargers available for under $150. The Charger 2 makes sense if you are already invested in the BLUETTI ecosystem, especially if you have their batteries or power stations with a battery port, and you drive frequently enough to justify the cost on a per-mile basis.

Conclusion

The BLUETTI Charger 2 is a capable DC-to-DC charger that delivers solid performance with compatible BLUETTI products and even works with third-party power stations through the solar port. It is a niche product, especially at its normal sale price, but it offers real value for dedicated BLUETTI users who spend significant time on the road. Just make sure the accessories you need are in stock before committing.
