inov-8 X-Talon Ultra 260 First Run Review: A Serious Mud Machine
An aggressive 8mm-lugged trail running shoe tested over 10k of wet, boggy woodland trails. Here is how the X-Talon Ultra 260 performed on its first outing.
Introduction
Wet, muddy trails are where most trail running shoes get found out. The inov-8 X-Talon Ultra 260 is built for exactly those conditions, with an aggressively lugged outsole designed to tackle the toughest, wettest, muddiest trail running conditions imaginable. We took it out for its first run: a 10k loop through waterlogged woodland after weeks of heavy rain, mixing deep mud, rocky sections, roots and wet tarmac. Here is how it got on.
Who This Product Is For
The X-Talon Ultra 260 is a soft ground specialist. The outsole carries 8mm deep, aggressively shaped lugs with generous spacing between them, so mud clears rather than packs in. If your running takes you onto boggy fields, sodden forest paths and winter hills, this is the kind of shoe that fills you with confidence the moment you look at the sole.

Key figures: the shoe weighs 290 grams in a men’s UK 10, runs an 8mm offset, and retails in the UK for £125. It feels lighter in the hand than the scales suggest, which is always a good sign for a race-oriented soft ground shoe.
Main Strengths
Grip is the headline. The lug pattern is one of the most aggressive we have seen on a trail shoe in some time, and it clawed through deep mud without hesitation. The outsole is coated in inov-8’s sticky rubber, which delivered surprisingly consistent traction on wet tarmac and rocky trail too. Deep-lugged shoes often feel sketchy on hard surfaces, but that was not the case here. Only wet wooden boardwalks and bridges demanded extra care, and most shoes would struggle there anyway.
Comfort was the pleasant surprise. The upper uses ballistic nylon for durability and breathability, and although it feels stiff and harsh to the touch at first, on the run it proved comfortable straight out of the box. The heel cup and ankle collar are the softest and most plush we have felt in an inov-8 shoe, yet the heel still felt genuinely locked in. The newly designed thinner tongue allowed a tighter midfoot lockdown with no discomfort or lace pressure over 10k.

Other positives: a beefy toe bumper offers good protection from trail debris, the traditional lacing is secure, and the Power Flow Max midsole keeps you connected to the ground rather than isolating you on a slab of foam.
Things to Consider Before Buying
The midsole cushioning is shallow and firm. On rocky technical sections and hard tarmac, you feel the ground through the shoe. That is by design: this is a soft ground shoe built for connection and ground feel, not a plush long-distance cruiser. If you prefer generous underfoot cushioning or spend significant time on hard surfaces, look elsewhere or plan an insole swap.

Two smaller notes. The standard sock liner is fairly basic, and swapping in a bouncier aftermarket insole would add a bit of plushness for runners who like more underfoot comfort. And on sizing, inov-8 shoes tend to run a little short, so going up half a size or one full size from your usual is a sensible move.
Buying Advice
If your winter running is dominated by mud, the X-Talon Ultra 260 does exactly what it promises, and it is comfortable enough that you will not be counting down the miles. Buy it as a dedicated soft ground weapon, not an all-rounder. For longer runs, keep an eye on how that thin tongue and the upper settle in over more mileage, since our impressions here come from a single 10k outing and longer runs may still reveal more. Runners used to firmer, more connected shoes will likely love it as is; everyone else should budget for a plusher insole.

Conclusion
The inov-8 X-Talon Ultra 260 delivered a genuinely positive first run: brilliant grip in deep mud, confident traction on rock and wet tarmac, and the most comfortable inov-8 upper we have worn. Its firm, low-cushion midsole is a trade-off rather than a flaw, and it is exactly what a soft ground shoe should feel like. If mud is your playground, this one deserves a place on your shoe rack.
