Inov-8 MudTalon Speed Review: A Fast Soft-Ground Trail Shoe With Real Comfort
The Inov-8 MudTalon Speed combines aggressive 8 mm lugs, a lightweight build, and more midsole comfort than the brand's classic racers. Here's how it performed over 30 miles of muddy forest testing.
Introduction
The Inov-8 MudTalon Speed is a new soft-ground running shoe built for exactly the conditions its name suggests: deep mud, wet grass, and sloppy winter trails. It pairs long, aggressive lugs with a genuinely lightweight design, aiming to be both speedy and grippy in equal measure.
Over roughly 30 miles of testing in a muddy North London forest, including a hilly five-mile cross country race, the shoe proved to be one of the most balanced soft-ground options the brand has produced. It keeps the nimble, racy feel of the classic X-Talon range while adding a little more cushion and protection underfoot, which makes a noticeable difference on longer runs and the day after a hard race.
Who This Product Is For
This is a shoe for runners who spend most of their off-road time on soft ground. If your routes are dominated by mud, grass, and mixed forest trails, and you want something fast enough to race in but comfortable enough to train in, the MudTalon Speed hits a sweet spot. It also suits cross country runners who find spikes or ultralight racers too punishing over longer distances, and anyone who found Inov-8’s traditional fits too narrow.
It is less ideal if you want an all-terrain shoe for mostly hard-packed trails or rocky ground. More versatile trail shoes will offer far more cushioning and general protection for that kind of use.
Design and Key Specifications
At £130 in the UK and $140 in the US, the MudTalon Speed weighs 257g (9oz), which is very light given the amount of outsole rubber on board. Stack height is 26 mm at the heel and 22 mm at the forefoot for a 4 mm drop, with midsole heights of 11 mm at the heel and 7 mm at the forefoot.
The upper is a lightweight ripstop material designed primarily for drainage, so it avoids soaking up water on wet, muddy runs. A toe guard runs around the front of the shoe to protect against accidental knocks from rocks and roots, and the toe box is foot-shaped. Flex grooves around the front of the shoe increase flexibility at toe-off and help preserve a natural ground feel.

Main Strengths
The headline strength is grip. Sticky Grip rubber with 8 mm lugs arranged in a multi-directional pattern gives excellent purchase climbing uphill and when braking back on your heels on descents, where the lugs change direction to dig in. The studs are widely spaced so mud sheds quickly, and the rubber compound is designed to cling to wet rock. In testing, an icy frozen grass descent and a greasy uphill mud climb both went by without slipping, and the shoe cleared heavy clay mud within a couple of strides.
The second strength is comfort for a soft-ground racer. The Powerflow Pro midsole is paired with a 6 mm TPU-beaded Boomerang sockliner that adds softness and bounce, giving noticeably more midsole comfort than Inov-8’s older lightweight soft-ground shoes. That extra protection made easy runs far more pleasant than in the X-Talon 210 and left legs feeling noticeably better the next day after racing. A flexible meta-shank rock plate adds a little protection without killing ground feel or flexibility.

Fit is also excellent. There are two width options, Precision Fit and a wider fit, a first for Inov-8, both referring to toe box width. On a narrow foot, the Precision Fit delivered a tight, dialed-in hold around the midfoot, while the more open back design made the shoe easier to get on and off, an issue with some past Inov-8 models. There was enough toe room for downhill running without cramping, yet the shoe still felt racy over short race distances and comfortable enough for long runs.
Grip on Mud, Grass, and Wet Rock
On its home turf, the MudTalon Speed is outstanding. In a hilly five-mile cross country race over grass, mud, and frozen ground, grip stayed confidence-inspiring on fast descents over icy grass and, crucially, on a steep muddy climb where purchase is everything. The shoe never felt like it was spinning or sliding on each step.
Mud shedding is genuinely good too. Rather than carrying half the course around on the outsole, the widely spaced lugs cleared heavy clay mud quickly, so the aggressive grip remained available for the next muddy patch. Drainage follows the same story: step in a deep puddle and the ripstop upper clears water fast, with only a little squelch from the insole briefly noticeable. Nothing like the prolonged soggy feeling some shoes give after a dunking.
Handling Harder Ground
The surprise of the testing period was how well the shoe coped with short spells on harder surfaces. Despite the 8 mm lugs, expectations of a skittery, uncomfortable ride on tarmac and rock were largely wrong. The Sticky Grip rubber holds reasonably well on wet pavement, and the shoe stays comfortable enough over short road sections linking forest trails.

For long stretches of rocky or gravelly ground it will never be the most comfortable option, and there are better shoes for that job. But for mixed-terrain races with occasional tarmac or harder trail sections, it copes well while still delivering that aggressive bite the moment the ground turns soft again.
Things to Consider Before Buying
The MudTalon Speed remains a firm, grounded shoe. Even with the added cushioning, it is not a big, plush cruiser, and it offers limited protection from the trail underneath. Runners wanting a general versatile trail shoe with more midsole comfort would be better served elsewhere.
It is also not the absolute lightest option for pure cross country racing. Spikes or something like the X-Talon 210 will give a marginal edge in an all-out short race over grass, and the MudTalon Speed is not a graphene-enhanced outsole like some recent Inov-8 shoes. Finally, despite the extra versatility, this is still a fairly specialised shoe: it can handle some hard ground, but it is best when most of your running is on soft stuff.
Buying Advice
For a fast, soft-ground-focused shoe that can do both racing and training, the MudTalon Speed is excellent. It suits cross country racing, especially longer events where a little protection goes a long way, plus winter training runs on muddy forest trails and fell runs on soft terrain.

If your running is mostly hard ground or mixed all-terrain use, look at more versatile options instead. But if mud and soft grass define your winter, this shoe lives up to essentially everything it sets out to achieve, and for many soft-ground runners it will be an ideal pick.
Conclusion
The Inov-8 MudTalon Speed is arguably the best-balanced soft-ground shoe the brand has made. It combines the lightweight, racy character of the X-Talon range with a touch more cushion, protection, and fit flexibility, and its grip in mud and wet grass is exceptional. For runners whose trails turn to mush each winter, it delivers exactly what it promises.
