inov-8 MudTalon Speed First Run Review: A Modern Mud Trail Shoe Worth a Close Look

First-run impressions of inov-8's new MudTalon Speed: specs, fit, construction, and how it performed on soft coastal trails.

Pair of aggressive-lugged trail running shoes on a concrete surface

Introduction

inov-8 has been busy refreshing its lineup, and the MudTalon Speed is one of the most interesting results: a brand new trail running shoe built specifically for soft ground, with updated materials and a foot-shaped design that is rolling out across the brand’s new models. After a first steady run on coastal trails, the early signs are very positive.

Specifications and Construction

The MudTalon Speed retails for £130 in the UK, which feels fair in the current market for running shoes. It weighs 278g in a UK 10, with a 26mm heel stack, 22mm under the forefoot, and a 4mm heel offset.

The upper uses a lightweight, highly breathable almost transparent fabric, with overlays wrapping the heel, midfoot, lace eyelets, and toe box for structure and durability. The gusseted tongue is well padded, a welcome change if you have found past inov-8 tongues too thin. The midsole uses lightweight Powerflow Pro foam, slightly softer than the brand’s usual material, paired with Boomerang footbeds. A flexible rock plate and a substantial toe bumper add protection on rocky trails while keeping the midsole very flexible.

inov-8 also offers the MudTalon Speed in two widths: a Precision Fit and a wide fit. The Precision Fit suits narrower feet, and there is still good toe box volume, so most foot shapes should find a workable option.

Outsole and Traction

The outsole is the reason the shoe exists. It features an aggressive 8mm lug design aimed at wet, muddy, and boggy conditions, with lugs shaped to shed mud so traction holds up over a run.

The sticky rubber compound has been slightly tweaked compared to previous versions, with the aim of better grip on rocky and wet rocky trails. Wet rock is where many lugged shoes struggle, so that is the condition worth testing before drawing final conclusions. There is no graphene grip on this shoe, just the updated sticky rubber.

First Run Impressions

Out of the box, the MudTalon Speed felt comfortable immediately. A mile of tarmac to reach the trails was no problem; the Powerflow Pro midsole and Boomerang footbeds take the edge off, and the aggressive lugs are noticeable but not punishing on harder surfaces.

On soft and mixed terrain the shoe really comes alive. It feels well connected underfoot, responsive, and lightweight, the kind of shoe that invites you to find the most technical section of trail and run it fast. Compared to the X-Talon 260 V2, it is nearly 40g lighter, more flexible, and comes with the Boomerang footbeds already included. The Precision Fit lockdown around the midfoot is excellent, and the heel feels dialed in without needing to crank the laces down.

Runner navigating rocky singletrack on the coast

The overall feel recalls a classic lightweight, grippy mud shoe: minimal enough for genuine ground feel, yet with enough cushioning and protection for rocky sections. The updated upper fabric feels light and airy, and the whole package reads as a noticeably more modern inov-8 product.

Who Should Buy the MudTalon Speed

If you want a lightweight, minimal, responsive, highly lugged trail shoe for genuinely muddy and boggy conditions, the MudTalon Speed deserves a serious look. Runners who preferred adding Boomerang footbeds to older inov-8 models will appreciate that they are now built in. If you need more width, the wide fit option makes this shoe accessible to a broader range of feet than the brand’s older models.

These are first-run impressions rather than a final verdict, and wet rock traction still needs more testing. But as an opening statement for inov-8’s new design direction, the MudTalon Speed is convincing.

Conclusion

The MudTalon Speed combines modern materials, a genuinely comfortable fit, and an outsole clearly built around soft ground. At £130 with both Precision and wide fits available, it is an easy recommendation for mud-focused trail runners to check out in more detail.
