Inov-8 Trailfly: First Run Impressions of a Comfortable All-Round Trail Shoe
A roomy toe box, softer Powerflow Pro foam and improved graphene grip make the Inov-8 Trailfly an easy shoe to like straight out of the box.
Introduction
The Inov-8 Trailfly sits in an interesting spot in the brand’s trail running lineup. After testing the aggressively lugged Mud Talon Speed earlier in the year, this shoe reveals itself as a very different tool, designed for drier and more compacted trails rather than deep mud.
Inov-8 has clearly been working hard behind the scenes: new branding, a refreshed logo, and meaningful design changes across its running shoes. The Trailfly benefits from a plusher, softer upper, a more foot-shaped anatomical fit, softer midsole foam, and even width options in some models.
Key Specs and Design
The Trailfly retails in the UK for a reasonable £130. It offers a 29mm stack height at the heel and 23mm under the forefoot, producing a 6mm heel offset. Weight comes in at 313g in a UK 10.
The upper uses a lightweight, breathable engineered mesh that feels noticeably softer and plusher than older Inov-8 designs. A well-padded, gusseted tongue addresses a long-standing comfort complaint with the brand’s older thin-tongue shoes, and the ankle collar is forgiving despite minimal bulk. Substantial overlays wrap the heel, midfoot, lace eyelets and toe box to add structure, and a solid toe bumper protects the front of the shoe.
The midsole uses Inov-8’s softer Powerflow Pro foam, paired with the brand’s Boomerang footbeds for an extra layer of underfoot comfort. Out on the trail, this combination delivered a genuinely nice balance of cushioning and ground connection: well cushioned across varied terrain, but not so over-cushioned that you lose feel for the surface beneath you.
Traction comes from a 4mm multi-directional lug pattern, with forward-facing chevrons on the forefoot and reverse-facing chevrons at the heel, all clad in an improved graphene grip rubber. Graphene is one of the world’s strongest materials, and Inov-8 claims this improved compound should provide better grip in wet conditions. A metaflex groove across the forefoot keeps the shoe flexible at the midfoot, so it feels responsive and nimble rather than stiff and planky.

First Run Impressions
Four miles into the first run in Haldon-style woodland shelter from a very windy Cornish day, the Trailfly felt genuinely good straight out of the box. In fact, it felt slipper-like. The shoe runs light despite the scale reading, feels balanced, and the flexible midsole keeps each stride lively.
There’s an obvious comparison lurking here: the foot-shaped, roomy toe box looks and feels remarkably like a certain well-known zero-drop trail shoe. The difference is that the Trailfly keeps a 6mm offset, which suits runners who want a bit of lift on tired legs without it ever feeling dominant. Compared with firmer, stiffer, heavier shoes tested recently, the difference was night and day. Where other first runs left hot spots and the urge to get home, this one invited extending the run well past ten miles.
By eight miles, with a big hill behind me, the shoe continued to impress. No rubbing, no irritation, and it felt like a pair already bedded in over a couple of months. That is always a great sign on a first run.
Fit and Sizing
Sizing is the one area where Inov-8 needs careful attention, because the brand has not been consistent in the past. Sizes ranging from a UK 9 to a UK 10.5 across different models is a real possibility, and the recommendation here is to go up half a size from your normal Inov-8 size. In this case, stepping from a usual UK 9.5 to a UK 10 delivered a perfect length fit.
The anatomical upper offers plenty of wiggle room in the toe box, then cuts in narrower at the midfoot, which allows a secure lockdown without cranking the laces tight. The heel, though soft and flexible, dials in well. For this foot shape at least, it is a genuinely well-fitting shoe.

Things to Consider Before Buying
Traction on wet and muddy ground was solid, with no slipping and sliding, and the graphene outsole coped well with everything on the run. The only real complaint came on patches where mud had started to dry and turn sticky: the outsole occasionally got clogged and did not shed mud as quickly as expected. On genuinely dry, compacted trails, this should not matter at all.
The shoe also feels similar underfoot to the popular G 270, but with a little more plushness, a more comfortable upper with a softer ankle collar and better-padded tongue, and the welcome addition of a 6mm offset over that shoe’s zero-drop platform. For longer training runs or races, that small lift should pay dividends.

Who This Product Is For
The Trailfly suits trail runners who spend most of their time on drier, compacted trails and want one comfortable, versatile shoe for daily training. It is especially appealing to runners who love the roomy, foot-shaped toe box trend but cannot get on with zero-drop shoes, and to anyone planning longer efforts where a modest heel offset and comfortable upper make a real difference. Runners who regularly tackle deep mud should look at more aggressively lugged options instead.
Buying Advice
At £130, the Trailfly represents good value in its category. Buy a half size up, consider the wide fit option if you need extra volume in the toe box, and treat it as your go-to for mixed, drier terrain. Early signs strongly suggest it will rack up plenty of miles in both training and racing, and a full in-depth review will follow once that mileage accumulates. A lighter racer sibling, the Trailfly Speed, is also on the way for those wanting something quicker.

Conclusion
The Inov-8 Trailfly makes an excellent first impression: comfortable out of the box, light on the foot, flexible underfoot, and secure in the midfoot. With the Mud Talon Speed also impressing earlier this year, Inov-8 appears to be having a strong run of form with its 2024 shoe designs, and the Trailfly looks set to be one of the standout all-rounders of the bunch.
