Introduction

A pen is just a pen, until it comes with a story. That is exactly what this custom fountain pen from Hooligan Georgia represents: a one-of-a-kind, completely handmade creation inspired by the film The Shawshank Redemption, built from materials with a direct connection to the movie itself. The result is less of a writing instrument and more of a cherished possession, and this review looks at what makes it special, where it excels, and what you should know before commissioning one.

Who This Pen Is For

Hooligan Georgia is the work of Tim Cullen, an artisan based in Canton, Georgia, about 45 minutes north of Atlanta. He does not sell pens off a website shelf. Instead, he collaborates with each customer over several weeks to design a one-of-a-kind piece, and each pen takes several months to complete. He is known for working with unusual materials, with past creations involving bog oak, copper Damascus steel, and even the tooth of a woolly mammoth. One of his pens resides in the Museum of Writing Instruments in Lake Winnebago country, Wisconsin.

So this pen is for someone who wants to be part of the making: you share ideas, approve materials, and even receive photos of the process, including the failures. Tim is a perfectionist who would rather start over than deliver something short of his vision. If you want a pen next week, this is not it. If you want a treasured possession, it very well might be.

The Story Behind the Materials

Every element of this pen carries symbolism tied to the film. The cap is made from a pearlescent grey resin by Jason Olen of Right Turnz, representing the prison walls of the fictional Shawshank State Prison. The barrel, however, is the headline act: it is made from stabilized wood taken from the prominent white oak tree featured in the movie, which stood in rural northern Ohio where most of the film was shot. The tree was damaged by storms in 2011 and 2016 and eventually had to be removed.

The wood arrives with a certificate of authenticity, complete with a photo of the tree and an ID number. Alongside that comes a letter describing the pen and its symbolism, details about the nib, and a quote card featuring the line “hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.” All of it is printed on thick, substantial paper stock that makes the documentation feel significant in its own right.

Main Strengths

The craftsmanship is the star. The stainless steel finial on top of the cap is hand engraved with a rock hammer, a key object in the story, set against a hand-dimpled texture background that makes the motif stand out. The solid stainless steel clip carries the prisoner number 37927 engraved in the exact font used in the movie, with a nickel silver clip ring for better spring retention. Hidden on the underside of the clip is the cursive name of the Mexican village central to the film’s ending, a fitting secret spot for a secret detail.

The cap band is a thick stainless steel ring reading “Brooks was here” on the front and “so was red” on the back, with the lettering replicating the handwriting carved into wood in the film. The text sits slightly off-centre, which initially looked like an oversight but ultimately matches the movie better. The grey resin extends about a quarter inch past the cap into the barrel, softening the transition and subtly echoing prison bars.

Inside, the pen uses a standard international cartridge/converter system, and a converter is included. Given the natural wood barrel, eyedropper conversion is not recommended. The cap twists off with two rotations to reveal the nib.

The Nib and Hardware

The nib is a handmade number 8 size nib created from Continuum, an alloy of sterling silver and palladium that feels somewhat like 14 karat gold: a touch stiffer than gold, but softer than steel. It is engraved with Jake the crow, another loaded symbol from the film, and the engraving sits deliberately off-centre, a choice that turns out to look better than a symmetrical layout would have. A number 6 on the underside marks this as the sixth of Tim’s custom handmade nibs, giving it a quiet provenance.

The nib was ground and tuned by Mark Bacas, and the ebonite feed was made by Joey Grassley of the Flexible Nib Factory. The section has a slight flare at the top, angles down, then rises to meet the resin threads. It offers a comfortable length and girth, and none of the pen’s edges are sharp, which speaks to the overall build quality.

Nib Performance and Writing Sample

The medium nib performs very well. Ink flow is decent and runs on the wet side, reverse writing is surprisingly smooth, and the ebonite feed keeps up comfortably during fast writing. It is not a flex nib and should not be pushed as one, but for everyday writing the tuning is excellent.

The writing sample used Robert Oster Bondi Buzzi blue ink, a saturated blue chosen for its beach connection to the film. In size terms, this is a fairly large pen, comparable in scale to a Pilot Custom Urushi, an ASC Bologna Extra Arco, and a Namiki Emperor. It is long enough to use unposted, and with a wood barrel and a heavy cap, unposted is the best way to use it: posting the cap risks stressing the wood over time.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The main consideration is patience. Each Hooligan Georgia pen takes several months, and the design process itself spans weeks of back-and-forth. Pricing starts around $900 and climbs depending on the concept and materials. There are also small, expected imperfections in the freehand engraving, which are part of the charm rather than a defect, but buyers expecting laser-perfect uniformity should know what they are getting.

Buying Advice

If you want a factory-precise pen delivered quickly, look elsewhere. If you want a collaborative, one-of-a-kind piece with genuine story value, handmade materials, and artisan-level detail work, reaching out to Tim is an easy recommendation. Come with a theme or material in mind, be flexible about letting the artisan make artistic calls, and be prepared to wait.

Conclusion

This Hooligan Georgia Shawshank Redemption pen is beautifully made, rich with symbolism, and backed by top-notch build quality from an extremely skilled craftsman. It is the kind of pen you never part with, and for anyone in the market for a custom creation with real meaning, it is a compelling example of what the category can deliver.
