Hoka Trail 2024 Lineup: Speedgoat 6 GTX, Tecton X3, and Torrent 3

Three trail shoes from Hoka's 2024 lineup, each aimed at a different type of trail runner, from everyday favorite to race-day weapon.

Introduction

Hoka’s 2024 trail range covers a wide spread of needs: a refreshed everyday favorite, a premium race-day machine, and a friendly entry point into trail running. Here is how the three shoes compare.

Hoka Speedgoat 6 GTX

The Speedgoat is one of Hoka’s most established trail shoes, and the Speedgoat 6 aims to be the lightest Speedgoat to date. The midsole compound has been updated for extra resiliency, weight reduction, and improved durability of the underfoot feel, while the lug pattern gets more bite, especially around the perimeter lug placement.

The upper moves to a lightweight textile with strong breathability and selective internal reinforcement for lockdown, addressing one of the main complaints about the Speedgoat 5. The GTX version adds waterproof protection for just a small price premium: the inline Speedgoat 6 holds at 155, while the GTX version is 160.

Hoka Tecton X3

The Tecton X3 is the spiciest shoe in the lineup, built with learnings from the prototype worn to win UTMB. The big change is a dual-layer foam setup top to bottom, replacing the previous EVA-based combination, and it feels especially good on trail sections where you can start to rip.

The parallel carbon fiber plate setup returns, with separate medial and lateral plates, but the plate wrap is now extended up the sidewall in strategic zones to enhance stiffness and torsional control, keeping your foot nested on the platform when cutting on technical terrain. More rubber coverage on the outsole adds underfoot protection and traction.

The Tecton X3 also adds an integrated knit gaiter built into the shoe, keeping debris out without the weight penalty of adding a separate gaiter. It is slightly heavier than the Tecton X2, priced at 275, and launched around UTMB in August. There is no gaiter-less option.

Hoka Torrent 3

The Torrent is Hoka’s first access point to trail running, and the Torrent 3 gives it a bit more Hoka attitude. It uses a foam compound similar to the Clifton for good resiliency, low weight, cushioning, and lifespan, with a strategic rubber wrap giving the outsole more bite for traction.

Stack height is slightly enhanced for extra cushioning, and the upper combines ripstop materials, closed mesh, and a built-in midfoot cage for lockdown. At 130 and launched on August 15, it is a strong-looking value pick for anyone starting out on trails.

Which One Should You Buy?

Pick the Speedgoat 6 if you want a proven everyday trainer made lighter and more breathable. Choose the Tecton X3 if you race on technical terrain and want carbon-plated performance with an integrated gaiter. Go for the Torrent 3 if you want an affordable, capable first trail shoe.

Conclusion

Hoka’s 2024 trail lineup gives runners three clear tiers: the refreshed Speedgoat 6 for daily mileage, the premium Tecton X3 for race day, and the Torrent 3 as an accessible entry point. Matching the shoe to your terrain and budget is the key to picking the right one.
