Hoka Mach 6 Review: A Bigger, Bouncier Everyday Speed Shoe

The Mach 6 gets a full slab of supercritical foam, a new rubber outsole, and more stack. Here's what that means for your faster daily miles.

Introduction

The Mach line has been a favourite for runners who wanted a light, snappy, non-plated shoe for faster days. The Hoka Mach 6 continues that tradition but changes the recipe in a big way, and that has understandably split opinions. After spending real miles in it, this is a shoe that trades some of the old ground feel for a bouncier, more cushioned ride, and for most runners that trade is worth a close look.

Who This Shoe Is For

Hoka positions the Mach 6 as an everyday, non-plated speed shoe, ideal for daily miles and slightly faster runs. It works for easy-paced running at the quicker end, tempo work, and even impromptu races like a parkrun or a 5K. If your week includes faster easy runs and sessions, this sits comfortably in that space.

Key specs: 37mm stack at the heel, a 5mm drop, and around 276g in the tested UK size 12, which is impressively light given the added cushioning. It is a neutral shoe with an engineered mesh upper, available in regular and wide widths and four colorways. The tested UK size 12 ran true to size.

Main Strengths

Comfort is the headline. The lockdown is solid, the updated heel feels good with no slipping, and the upper is comfortable enough that it is easy to switch off and just run. The ride itself comes from a large chunk of Hoka’s supercritical foam, the biggest update in this version, and it delivers a fun, responsive feel that encourages you to pick up cadence and run a little faster.

The weight deserves praise too. Despite more stack height, more responsiveness, and a new outsole, the Mach 6 only gained a very small amount of weight over its predecessor. You genuinely feel like you are running with almost nothing underfoot, which is a strong result given how much has been added.

The new rubber outsole is the third big win. It is a first for the Mach line, adds a touch of stiffness and structure through foot strike, supports the soft midsole, and improves durability and grip. Dry-road grip is genuinely good; wet-weather grip is okay, somewhere around average for a shoe like this.

Things to Consider Before Buying

This is a very different shoe from the Mach 5. Fans of the older model should know that stack height has grown by roughly 7 to 8mm, and the full slab of soft supercritical foam plus the rubber outsole remove much of the ground-contact feel and ultra-responsive character the line was known for. The ride is more subdued and cushioned.

The fit also runs a bit narrow, in typical Hoka fashion, and slightly narrower than the outgoing version. If your feet are anywhere near wide, choose the wide option on the Hoka website. Finally, at recovery-run paces the shoe feels a little awkward; it is not a true do-it-all trainer, and that role still belongs to the Clifton.

Buying Advice

For anyone wanting a non-plated shoe for faster easy runs, tempos, sessions, or the occasional parkrun or 5K, the Mach 6 delivers very well and earns a place in a rotation. Its best range is the quicker end of easy pace up to 5K through marathon racing distances. Just be realistic: if you loved the old low-stack, ultra-responsive Mach character, you may prefer to stick with the previous version, while runners who want more cushion will find this the better all-round shoe of the two.

Conclusion

The Hoka Mach 6 is a genuinely enjoyable everyday speed shoe: supremely comfortable, impressively light for its stack, and consistently fun at faster paces. It loses a little of the niche, ground-feel-heavy personality of the Mach 5, but what replaces it is a more complete daily trainer that puts a smile on your face when the runs get done. Easy to recommend to friends, family, and anyone shopping in this category.
