Introduction

Running poles have quietly become one of the most useful pieces of kit you can carry on long, hilly routes. Harrier Trail Running, a British independent brand, has entered the market with its first fixed-length carbon pole: the Hellvelyn Carbon Pro. We put a pair through extended testing in the mountains around Chamonix, including long training runs and the 145 km, 9,100 m of elevation of the TDS at UTMB, where they were in hand for the vast majority of a 39-hour race.

Why Running Poles Belong in Your Trail Kit

Running poles come in two main types: adjustable poles that extend to your preferred length, and fixed-length poles that fold down smaller and weigh less because there is no adjustment hardware. Fixed-length poles are the natural choice if you know your correct size, and most brands offer sizing guides to help you choose.

Carbon construction is a real differentiator. A carbon pole is stiffer than aluminium, so more of your power transfers into the trail when you are power hiking a long climb, and the material is strong yet very light. Aluminium poles flex under load, which costs you some efficiency on extended ascents.

Main Strengths

The Hellvelyn Carbon Pro is built from 100% 4K carbon, which delivers a rigid, efficient pole that also feels durable. At 125 cm, each pole weighs just 184 grams, among the lightest carbon poles we have used.

The Z-pole design folds into three sections, packing down to only 36 centimetres, which makes stowing them on a race vest or in a running belt genuinely easy. The inner wire system carries a protective coating for durability, and the mud basket at the tip doubles as a clip that holds the folded pole neatly together, a small detail that makes a big difference in daily use.

Comfort is where these poles truly separate themselves. The smooth contoured EVA grips stay comfortable for hours, paired with a plush, fleecy lined wrist strap. Over a 39-hour race with the poles in hand roughly 80% of the time, there was no discomfort, irritation, or blistering, which has not always been the case with other brands we have used over the years.

Things to Consider Before Buying

Because these are fixed-length poles, selecting the right size for your height is essential. They are available in six lengths from 105 cm up to 130 cm, which covers the vast majority of runners.

Carbon is stiff and efficient, but it has one inherent trade-off: if a carbon pole gets jammed between rocks, it can snap. An aluminium pole will typically bend and can be straightened out on the go, so if you regularly run very rocky, technical terrain, that is worth weighing up. For transport and use on tarmac or very rocky trails, rubber tip covers are included to protect the carbide tip.

Buying Advice

The Hellvelyn Carbon Pro retails for 89 pounds, which is remarkable value for a fixed-length carbon pole of this quality. Comparable carbon poles from established brands sit noticeably higher: at least 150 pounds from Leki, around 160 from Black Diamond, and roughly 135 from Mountain King.

Harrier also includes a protective storage case, rubber tip covers, and a one-year money-back guarantee. The poles were available to pre-order at the time of testing, with shipping expected around mid-October. If you are buying your first pair of poles or upgrading to something lighter, more compact, and made from carbon, this is one of the strongest options available. Harrier’s website also hosts a helpful beginner’s guide to running poles if you are new to the category.

Conclusion

The Harrier Hellvelyn Carbon Pro is an outstanding fixed-length carbon running pole: very light, stiff and efficient, exceptionally comfortable over long distances, and thoughtfully detailed with a compact fold and practical clip system. At 89 pounds, it undercuts most of the established competition while matching or beating them in performance, making it an easy recommendation for trail runners tackling long, hilly routes.
