Introduction

The Franklin-Christoph Model 03 Sparkling Rock is a limited edition fountain pen available exclusively through the Italian retailer Stilo & Stile. Stilo & Stile has built a reputation for partnering with manufacturers to create distinctive limited edition models, and this collaboration is one of its more interesting efforts: a US-made pen whose material draws its inspiration from Italian green marble.

Unboxing and Presentation

The pen arrives in a standard Franklin-Christoph box, which includes a small card showing the team member who tuned your nib. Franklin-Christoph takes care to ensure every nib leaving its facility is smoothed and tuned before it ships. Also included is a herringbone-pattern zippered pouch, which comes in gray or blue depending on availability.

The Sparkling Rock material itself is the star. It was made by Turned, a small US-based artisan resin workshop run by Tim Crow in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The idea behind the material was to merge US and Italian craftsmanship with a resin that replicates the beauty of Italian green marble, using different shades of green and pearlescent white. No two pens in this edition will look exactly alike, which adds to the appeal for collectors who appreciate handmade alumilite resins.

Design and Details

The cap top is flat with a beveled edge, engraved with the Franklin-Christoph logo and four diamonds. One minor quibble: the engraving is not perfectly aligned with the clip, sitting at a slight angle. In practice it is hard to notice on this darker green material unless caught in the right light, so it does not detract much from the overall look.

The clip is rhodium plated with a slight bow, engraved with the same four-diamond motif, and slopes up at the end to ease use. It accommodates materials of varying thicknesses without trouble. There is no traditional cap band; instead the cap end is engraved with the company name and the model number, a cleaner look that suits this design.

Grip, Posting, and Filling

The section begins with blocky cap threads, an unusual placement. For writers who grip close to the end of the section this could be a concern, but the threads here are large enough that they act like a raised ring, effectively keeping the grip in place behind them. It works better than it sounds.

The pen is plenty long enough to use unposted, which is the more comfortable option. The cap does post securely and adds considerable length, but because the cap is fairly light, the balance does not suffer noticeably. This is a cartridge-converter pen that accepts standard international cartridges, and a converter is provided. With the barrel’s one-piece construction and lack of metal parts, it would also be a fine candidate for eyedropper conversion.

Nib and Writing Experience

The cap twists off with a single rotation, revealing a number six Jowo stainless steel nib. The pen is offered in extra fine, fine, medium, broad, and both 1.1 and 1.5 stub sizes. Franklin-Christoph’s specialty nibs are typically not available on retailer limited editions, so the standard lineup applies here.

As with all Franklin-Christoph nibs, the one on this pen performs very well, reflecting the care the company takes in tuning every nib before it leaves the facility. The broad nib in this example has a decent amount of ink flow, reverse writing is slightly sharp but gets the job done, and the feed keeps up comfortably with fast writing.

Size and Comparisons

For context, the Model 03 sits alongside other notable pens such as the Franklin-Christoph Model 66, the Visconti Millionaire, the Pelikan M805, and the Lamy Safari. It is a comfortable medium-large size that feels substantial without being oversized.

Limited Edition Details and Availability

The Sparkling Rock is a limited edition of 150 units, sold only through the Stilo & Stile website, and retails for about $230. It is limited but not numbered, and more than half of the edition is reported to have already sold. If this pen appeals to you, acting sooner rather than later is the safer bet before the edition disappears for good.

Performance and Writing Sample

Paired with a dark green ink with pleasant sheening behavior, the pen made a convincing writing sample. The ink pairing was well chosen, echoing the green marble theme of the resin.

For fast everyday writing, the nib and feed combination proved dependable, and the overall writing feel matched what you would expect from a carefully tuned Franklin-Christoph nib.

Conclusion

The Stilo & Stile Franklin-Christoph Model 03 Sparkling Rock is a thoughtful limited edition: a well-executed material concept, a reliably tuned nib, and practical everyday ergonomics. With more than half of the 150 units already gone, it is a pen worth considering quickly if the green marble resin speaks to you.
