Best Stud Finders 2026: Five Popular Models Put to the Test
We tested five popular stud finders on drywall, firewall, and lath and plaster surfaces to see which ones really find studs and avoid false readings.
Introduction
Finding a stud behind drywall should be simple, but not all stud finders handle every wall type equally. We tested five of the most popular models from Amazon, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Acme Tools. Each tool claims to detect studs behind standard drywall, and some promise more, including metal studs, live wires, pipes, and rebar.
To separate marketing claims from real performance, we built a test wall with three distinct sections. The top section used 5/8 inch drywall, which represents what most homes have. The middle section used two layers of 5/8 inch type X drywall, totaling 1.25 inches, which mimics a commercial firewall. The bottom section used lath and plaster, a dense and thick surface common in homes built before the 1950s or 1960s.
Behind the wall, we placed wood studs, metal studs, a PVC drain pipe, a water-filled half-inch copper pipe, live 12-2 Romex wire, and half-inch EMT conduit with live wires inside. This setup gave us a realistic picture of what each tool can and cannot detect.
How We Tested
Each stud finder was calibrated and moved across the wall following the same procedure. We scanned for wood studs, metal studs, and the various hidden elements. We noted how clearly each tool indicated the center of a stud, whether it gave false readings for electrical, and whether it could identify pipes and conduit.
A key part of proper stud finder use is calibration. After turning the tool on, you calibrate it against the wall, then move it across to find the center. It is important to move back, recalibrate, and bring it in again to verify the reading. This double-checking helps avoid false readings from hidden pipes, water lines, or wiring.

On the 5/8 inch drywall section, every tool detected both the wood and metal studs. The differences showed up in how accurately they indicated center and how often they produced false electrical readings.

DeWalt DW0150
The DeWalt DW0150 claims up to 1 inch of depth detection with wood studs, 1.5 inches with metal studs, and up to 2 inches for live wires. It sells for about $25.
On the 5/8 inch drywall, the DeWalt found the center of the wood stud and indicated AC when it detected the live wire. It did not find the steel stud. It gave a fault reading on the PVC pipe, showing AC and asking to move back and forth without giving a center reading. It triggered the AC symbol on the copper pipe, telling the user something was there but not identifying it as a water-filled pipe.
On the firewall section with two layers of drywall, the DeWalt found the studs and noted the AC. It detected the metal stud and sensed the AC behind it. It saw something on the PVC pipe but did not give a clear reading, and it did not see the copper pipe.
On the lath and plaster section, the DeWalt struggled at first but eventually locked onto a stud and showed a reading close to center. It found the edge of the metal stud but not the center. It did not see the PVC pipe or the copper pipe.
Franklin Sensors M210
The Franklin Sensors M210 offers 1.7 inches of detection depth, 13 built-in sensors, a live wire meter, and a 21 LED display that shows the edge and centers of studs. It sells for about $60.
On the 5/8 inch drywall, the Franklin clearly indicated the center of the wood stud, with edges also shown. It gave a false electrical reading near the stud. It found the center of the steel stud quickly but again showed a false electrical reading. On the PVC pipe, it showed electrical without identifying what was behind. On the copper pipe, it gave a false reading indicating a possible stud and electrical, though there was no power.
On the firewall section, the Franklin found centers but was not consistent. It took some work to lock onto the stud. It picked up power near the EMT conduit but did not give an accurate representation. On the PVC pipe, readings were all over the place. It gave no reading on the copper pipe.
On the lath and plaster, the Franklin could not get a good calibration. It showed what looked like Christmas lights everywhere and did not see the studs. It indicated power nearby but not where the stud was. It did not see the PVC pipe or the copper pipe with any accuracy.
JAX WQT H410
The JAX WQT H410 comes with an LCD display and is supposed to sense wood and metal studs, pipes, rebar, and live wires. It sells for about $23.
On the 5/8 inch drywall, the JAX instantly showed a power symbol when there was no power behind the wall. It found the center of the wood stud quickly. It also found the center of the metal stud without issue. It did not see the EMT conduit, the PVC pipe, or the copper pipe. The electrical symbol kept appearing even after recalibration.
On the firewall section in deep scan mode, the JAX marked the edge of the stud as the center, which would cause a user to miss the stud. It showed a center line before even reaching the stud. The electrical notification was always on, making it hard to trust. It did not see the PVC pipe or the copper pipe at all.
On the lath and plaster, the JAX gave false readings and did not find the center of the steel stud. It was not consistent on anything behind the wall.
Klein Tools ESF 150 LL
The Klein Tools ESF 150 LL is designed to find both wood and metal studs at depths of up to 1.5 inches. A cross line laser makes vertical or horizontal marking easy. It sells for about $65.
On the 5/8 inch drywall, the Klein found the center of the wood stud but gave a wide range, showing center when the user was actually on the edge. The beeping sound covered a large area, making it not entirely accurate. On the steel stud, it began beeping and showed center when it was not. It did not see the EMT conduit. It saw something on the PVC pipe but not accurately. It told the user there was a stud on the copper pipe when there was not.
On the firewall section, the Klein gave a wide band of what it was seeing and did not show an accurate center. It called out the edge of the metal stud as the center line. It saw something on the PVC pipe and suggested it might be a stud. It did not see the copper pipe.
On the lath and plaster, the Klein lit up but did not give a solid reading on what was center. It showed something where there was nothing. It did not see any of the hidden elements and gave error readings.
Zircon HD70
The Zircon HD70 stud sensor offers the ability to see both wood and metal studs, a deep scan mode, stud center detection, and a live wire warning. It sells for about $30.
On the 5/8 inch drywall, the Zircon showed a red arrow indicating the center of the stud, which was accurate. It showed electrical when there was power, which was correct. On the second stud, it showed electrical when there was none but still found the center. It sensed electrical behind the EMT conduit but did not say what it was. It did not see the PVC pipe or the water pipe.
On the firewall section in deep scan mode, the Zircon found the center of the first stud well. It had a harder time with the second stud, especially with power nearby. It found the metal stud more easily but gave an inconsistent reading, calling the edge the center. It showed power nearby when there was none. It did not see the PVC pipe, labeling it as power instead. It did not really see the copper pipe.
On the lath and plaster, the Zircon saw something but did not give a good measure of what it was. It saw an edge and said the center was toward the edge, which was not accurate. It showed power nearby. It did not see the metal stud very well. It saw the EMT conduit but did not tell the user there was power in it. It did not see the PVC pipe and said the copper pipe was power, which was not the case.
Overall Results
On the 5/8 inch drywall section, every tool detected both the wood and metal studs. Some gave false electrical readings and had trouble with the hidden pipes. The Zircon took the lead in this test, detecting studs accurately and avoiding false readings on the other items in the wall.
On the firewall section with two layers of drywall, all tools detected the two wood studs and the metal stud. Results were mixed when detecting live wires, which were stapled in the middle of the stud and therefore trickier to detect. The Franklin did the best job of detecting everything through the two layers of drywall.
On the lath and plaster section, which is an extreme test more difficult than most modern homes present, the DeWalt did the best job of seeing the studs despite its simple interface. Some tools were not able to detect anything at all through this surface.

Buying Advice
For overall performance across all wall types, the Zircon HD70 stands out. It has a user interface that is easy to read and understand, and it did a good job of detecting live wiring and hidden features behind the wall. It also avoided many of the false readings that affected other models.
If you primarily work with standard drywall and want clear center detection, the Franklin Sensors M210 offers a wide LED display and 13 sensors, though it was less consistent on thicker walls.
For older homes with lath and plaster, the DeWalt DW0150 performed better than the others, even if its interface is more basic.
The JAX WQT H410 is the most budget-friendly option at about $23, but its constant electrical symbol and inaccurate center readings on thicker walls make it harder to trust.
The Klein Tools ESF 150 LL adds a useful cross line laser for marking, but its wide detection range made it less accurate at pinpointing the exact center of a stud.

Conclusion
All five of these stud finders are top sellers from major retailers, and each one can detect studs on standard drywall. The differences appear when you move to thicker walls, older plaster surfaces, and hidden pipes or wiring. If you want a tool that performs well overall with a clear display and fewer false readings, the Zircon HD70 is the strongest choice. For those who need to work through lath and plaster, the DeWalt DW0150 is worth considering. Whichever model you choose, remember to calibrate, check, and double-check your readings to avoid drilling into something you did not expect.
