Favorite Fountain Pens of the Year: 19 Standouts From Custom Makers and Artisans
A year-end roundup of the most memorable fountain pens of the year, from custom resin artisans to impressive budget-friendly Asian pens.
Introduction
Every year brings a fresh wave of discoveries, and this past twelve months delivered an unusually strong crop. Between artisan custom makers, new models from established brands, and a wave of impressive, reasonably priced Asian pens, there was no shortage of pens worth talking about. This roundup gathers the favorites: first a set of honorable mentions that deserved more attention, then the top picks of the year.
A few common threads run through the list: custom resin work done well, unusual materials, distinctive nibs, and pens that feel genuinely crafted rather than merely assembled.

Honorable Mentions
These pens were very much enjoyed and felt they deserved a bit more attention.
White Bear Pens Echo
The standout here is the resin, paired with a polar bear logo on the end cap and the maker’s logo on the nib. It is an overall solid offering from a small maker doing consistently good work. If you get the chance to pick one up, it comes highly recommended.
Little Hollow Customs Mistress Hybrid
The gem bronze trim is what really makes this pen. It is an antique-style bronze material with a subtle tactile element that is rarely used on pens, and it creates a lovely contrast against the blue body. The pen performs nicely as well.
Papa J Studios Jade Mermaid and Pine Cones and Petals
Two pens from Papa J Studios earned mentions, both built around custom resin. The Jade Mermaid is a green floral pen with flowers embedded in the resin and gold flake that makes the nib stand out beautifully. The Pine Cones and Petals takes it further, with feathers, pine cones, and gold leaf embedded in the body for a genuinely interesting material.

Edison Alysian
This brand-new Edison model is made from Jonathan Brooks primary manipulation material, but the shape is the real story. It posts incredibly deep, fits well in the crook of the hand, and offers a profile unlike anything else in the collection. Edison makes great pens overall, and this one is a nice example of that.
Jun Lee 930
A very large pen with a very large number nine nib that performs extremely well, all at a reasonable price. This was one of several less expensive Chinese-made and Taiwanese pens reviewed this year, and it was among the most impressive. Big pen, big nib, good performance, fair price.

The Top Pens of the Year
The main list, counting down through the pens that stood out most over the past year.
Mythic Pens VS3
A modern take on a classic look. The VS3 uses a Jonathan Brooks resin with fully handmade brass trim, giving it a real vintage feel despite being a thoroughly modern pen that performs very well. Mythic Pens has a number of fantastic models, and this one caught the eye immediately.
Vazir Meteor Shower
The Meteor Shower has interesting resin, but what really stood out is the unique nib engraving available on this pen. Distinctive nib engravings are always appealing, and this one is genuinely neat. If a “most beautiful nibs” list ever happens, this nib would be on it.
Vazir Horizon
Probably the largest pen in the collection, yet still reasonable to use. It carries a number six nib, which looks a touch small on such a big pen; a number eight would suit it better. Even so, the material is enjoyable, the large pen feels great in the hand, and the looks are stunning while it performs nicely.
Gravitas by Frost
A self-serving pick, as this was a personal project earlier in the year. The frosted resin with PVD-coated trim lets a rainbow show through, the clear converter knob hides the piston mechanism, and the PVD-coated nib completes the look. It turned out sharp, and a next project may arrive in February or March.
Hooligan Georgia Custom Blue Pen
Tim Cullen of Hooligan, Georgia is a master craftsman, and everything on this pen is handmade, from the nearly lapis lazuli-like Conway Stewart resin to the hand-engraved clip and even the nib itself, which he makes and numbers individually. For anyone considering a custom commission, his work is exceptional, and disappointments are essentially unheard of.
Rob’s Pen Works Wood and Resin Pen
One of the favorite artisan pens received this year. The resin follows the lines of the wood, giving the combination a natural flow, with just enough sparkle without too much flash. The natural features of the wood look fantastic, and the octopus logo on the section is a cool touch.
Asvine C2000
The favorite of the more affordable Asian pens reviewed this year. Stabilized wood looks fantastic, the large number eight nib is very cool, and the combination of nice material, strong performance, and a reasonable price makes this a standout. Makers like Asvine have genuinely stepped up their game.
Stanford Pen Studio Haunted House
Quite possibly the favorite custom artwork on any single pen received, this Halloween-themed pen features handmade pencil-drawing artwork: a young lady with astonishing facial detail down to her freckles, her cat, a spot of color on the lantern, a haunted tree, individual ghosts, and one final little ghost at the very bottom. The theme is cohesive throughout the entire pen, and the studio’s focus on local South African artisans shows in the quality.
5040 Titan Ultimum
A metal pen from a Scottish company with a lot to like: an interesting bulk-filler style filling mechanism, high-quality craftsmanship that recalls the best of small-batch metal pens, a large nib, and a low-profile ebonite section. The nib performs very well on top of everything else, and the future looks promising for this maker.
Lorett Stealth Thread
A new discovery from a Japan-based company, met at a pen show. The machined threads on the barrel are the star: the very light but sturdy cap glides on and off effortlessly, making capping and uncapping one of the most satisfying experiences of any pen. The section runs a little small, but the barrel grooves give a pleasant tactile feel without being sharp. Precision engineering throughout.
Black Robin Pens Skate Pen
A pen that would make a personal top three. Made from recycled skateboards as an annual limited batch, it has a unique look, a story, and unusual materials, all criteria that matter. The blue resin, chosen from the maker’s options, pops against the skateboard material and matches its colors beautifully. Getting on the list for next year’s batch is strongly encouraged.
Ark Layer Maze
The pen everyone was talking about at the show. This 3D-printed pen uses a high-quality printing method that avoids the visible layer lines of cheaper approaches, comes in a cool 3D-printed case, and offers several barrel designs. It was picked up at the show and is currently offered through a Kickstarter, so availability is limited to the campaign window.
Esterbrook x Bungubox Kachu Fugettu Kingfisher
Purchased on impulse at a Brooklyn stationery shop, this Esterbrook collaboration with Japan’s Bungubox uses a resin that truly captures a kingfisher: vibrant pearlescent blue, orange, and black. That blue is a long-standing favorite color, and the pen performs very nicely as well. The moment it was seen, it had to be owned.

Overall Buying Advice
Three takeaways from a year of testing. First, custom and artisan makers continue to justify their premiums with materials and craftsmanship that mass production cannot replicate. Second, the affordable end of the market, particularly Asian manufacturers, is producing pens with large nibs, interesting materials, and genuine performance at prices that make them easy to recommend. Third, unusual materials and stories, from recycled skateboards to embedded flowers, add real joy to a collection and are often worth the hunt.
Conclusion
From handmade brass trim to pencil-drawn artwork and 3D-printed barrels, this year’s favorites show how diverse the fountain pen world has become. Whether the draw is craftsmanship, material, story, or simply a beautiful resin, there is something here for nearly every collector. The coming year already looks promising.
