Introduction

Some pens earn a second look before you ever hold one, and the Esterbrook SD Raven Oversize is one of them. The original SD Raven caught plenty of attention, but Esterbrook followed it up with an oversized version featuring a matte black finish, glossy black accents, and a filling system that sets it apart from the standard cartridge converter model.

This review covers the parts, features, sizing, and writing performance, along with what works and what does not, to help you decide whether this pen deserves a spot in your rotation.

Design and Finish

The pen arrives in a magnetic-closure box with a small card containing a QR code for warranty activation. Inside sits the pen itself: a matte black body paired with glossy black accents. The overall effect is striking in its simplicity. Rather than gold or silver trim, the glossy black rings keep the design cohesive, and that restraint suits the pen well.

The clip has a fair amount of flex, so it handles pocket materials of varying thicknesses without trouble. The cap end starts with a rounded tip and angles up significantly before straightening out in the last inch, and the Esterbrook engraving on the cap is clean and well executed.

The barrel begins with another glossy black ring, runs straight for about an inch, then slowly tapers toward a blind cap. The finishing touches feel deliberate throughout, with the black-on-black theme carried consistently across every component.

Nib, Section, and Filling System

The cap twists off in one and a half rotations to reveal a number six stainless steel nib with a black coating. The engraving on the nib is grayed out rather than left as bare silver-toned metal, which is a smart aesthetic choice that keeps the monochrome look intact. It is a JoWo nib available in extra fine, fine, medium, broad, and a 1.1 stub.

The section begins with a slight flare, angles up, and includes the cap threads plus a very generous ink window, followed by a medium-sized step up to the body. The pen is long enough to use unposted, which is fortunate because it does not post securely or deeply on the blind cap.

The main difference from the standard SD is the filling system. The Oversize uses a push-button filler: pressing the button creates suction that pulls ink past an internal tube, where it drops into the ink chamber. It works efficiently, drawing ink in almost immediately, and it is a welcome change from the usual piston filler.

Inking Up and Writing Sample

Testing with a black ink, the broad stainless steel nib performs smoothly with generous ink flow. Do not expect much line variation from the broad nib, but it is extremely smooth and enjoyable to write with. The feed keeps up nicely even during faster writing.

Reverse writing is a little scratchy, but it works and produces an extra fine line. The broad nib delivers a consistent, wet, comfortable writing experience that suits everyday note-taking and longer writing sessions alike.

Buying Advice

The full retail price for the SD Raven Oversize is $295, but general retail pricing sits just under $250, which feels like a fair range for an oversized pen of this build and design. Compared against other matte black pens, it holds its own comfortably.

For anyone drawn to matte finishes, oversized pens, or an alternative filling system, the value proposition at this price point is strong. The one design compromise worth knowing about is the unreliable posting, so plan to use it unposted.

Conclusion

The Esterbrook SD Raven Oversize delivers a sharp all-black aesthetic, a smooth broad nib, and an effective button filler at a reasonable price. It fits a specific taste well, and for readers whose aesthetic leans toward understated matte black pens, it is an easy recommendation.
