EcoFlow Glacier Classic 55L Review: A Big, Efficient Dual Zone Fridge Freezer

Introduction

EcoFlow has released a new version of its Glacier portable compressor fridge freezer, calling it the Glacier Classic. Despite the name, this is an entirely new design with no connection to the original icemaking model. The Glacier Classic comes in three sizes: 35L, 45L, and 55L. The 35L is a single zone model, while the 45L and 55L offer dual zone capability. This review focuses on the largest dual zone model, the 55L.

The 55L model is substantial. It weighs about 60 lb with the battery installed, and its dimensions are roughly 28 x 18 x 19 inches. That size allows it to hold up to 90 cans of 330ml beverage. There are no wheels, just a pair of foldout handles, so a two-person lift is recommended when the fridge has anything inside.

Design and Build Quality

The Glacier Classic 55L is a convertible dual zone design. It offers two separate compartments with a removable divider that turns the unit into a large single zone when needed. When you remove the divider, the display automatically changes to single zone controls, which is a thoughtful touch. Either or both sides can be set to fridge or freezer mode, with a minimum temperature setting of -4 degrees Fahrenheit, which is deep freezer territory.

A notable design feature is the lid, which can be opened from either side or removed entirely for loading and cleaning. The dual zone divider snaps neatly into the lid when not in use, and it can double as a cutting board. Inside, there are two lights, one in each compartment, so visibility in the dark is not an issue. A drain plug in the bottom helps with cleaning.

Controls, App, and Connectivity

The display is high quality, plenty bright, and easy to read, with physical buttons. It can be locked to prevent accidental changes. The fridge supports EcoFlow’s remote app, allowing control from anywhere as long as the unit has Wi-Fi. The app is entirely optional.

The fridge offers both eco and max modes. Eco mode runs the compressor slower and quieter at around 45 watts to save energy. In eco mode, the fridge has a wider temperature range for the compressor to cycle, up to about 5 degrees Fahrenheit. If that variation is a concern, max mode provides a much smaller 2-degree difference. For those using lead acid batteries, the fridge includes low, medium, and high settings for battery low voltage protection.

Performance Testing: Fridge Mode

Performance testing was conducted in a room held at a constant 76 degrees Fahrenheit, close to EcoFlow’s stated test conditions of 77 degrees. The fridge was set to 39 degrees Fahrenheit in max mode with the battery removed to measure pure DC power consumption.

From room temperature, the fridge reached 39 degrees in just 20 minutes, using only 19 watt hours. After resetting the meter, the fridge ran for a full 24 hours in eco mode at 39 degrees. The results showed 236 watt hours consumed, or 9.75 amp hours, averaging 9.8 watts. With the 298Wh battery, this translates to about 30 hours of run time under ideal conditions. This is slightly shy of the claimed 39 to 40 hours, but still impressive.

A thermometer placed inside overnight confirmed the fridge was holding around 38 degrees, which is close to the 39-degree setting. The internal sensor showed some fluctuation, which is expected in eco mode.

Performance Testing: Dual Zone Mode

A second 24-hour test was conducted in dual zone mode. One side was set to freezer at 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and the other side was set to 39 degrees Fahrenheit, both in eco mode. The results showed 368 watt hours consumed over 24 hours, averaging just over 15 watts. This means the internal battery would provide just over 19 hours of run time in dual fridge freezer mode.

That level of efficiency is on par with top-of-the-line competitors. The dual zone power consumption is almost double that of fridge-only mode, which is expected since freezers consume significantly more power.

Internal temperature measurements showed the freezer sidewall at 10 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, while the bottom of the freezer was warmer at around 8 degrees. The refrigerator side measured about 36 to 37 degrees at the bottom and sides. The small plateau area above the battery compartment, intended for dairy and eggs, ran warmer at around 49 degrees, which is by design to prevent dairy from freezing.

Noise Levels

The fridge is not a loud product. At a meter away, it measured 43 dB in max mode, which is its loudest setting. In eco mode, it is likely a bit quieter at around 41 to 42 dB. The compressor sound is not unpleasant and sounds like a typical refrigerator.

Known Issue: Battery USB-C Port

One problem was found during testing, though it may be specific to an early production model. The battery’s bidirectional USB-C port, which is supposed to allow charging and discharging, did not work. Testing involved a 100W power delivery charger, two different power banks, and three different cables. In all cases, the port did not charge or discharge properly. The battery itself powered the fridge fine, but the USB-C functionality was non-functional.

This is a notable issue because the ability to extend battery life by plugging in an external power bank or EcoFlow power station through USB-C would be a valuable feature. As tested, that capability did not work.

Buying Advice

The EcoFlow Glacier Classic 55L is a well-designed, well-built, and super efficient fridge. It can certainly compete with premium brands in the portable fridge space. The 2-inch insulation is a standout feature, and the Energy Star rating is a genuine advantage.

The 2-year warranty is somewhat underwhelming for a product in this category. The lack of a direct EcoFlow battery connector, such as the XT-150 used on their power stations, is also a missed opportunity. While the fridge can be powered through a 12V car port on a power station, a direct battery connection would allow for more flexible power options.

For those planning road trips, especially in hot weather, the thick insulation and efficient compressor make this a compelling choice. The dual zone capability adds versatility, allowing both fridge and freezer functions in one unit.

Conclusion

The EcoFlow Glacier Classic 55L is a fine fridge. It is efficient, well-built, and offers strong performance in both fridge and dual zone modes. The real-world battery life of about 30 hours in fridge mode and 19 hours in dual zone mode is impressive for a 298Wh battery.

The main drawbacks are the non-functional USB-C port on the battery, at least on this early production model, and the lack of a direct battery connector. The 2-year warranty is also shorter than some might prefer.
