Dominant Industry Kiyon Stationery Room 1 Serenity Review: A Fountain Pen With a Hotel Key Theme

Dominant Industry, known for small-batch inks, steps into fountain pens with the Kiyon Stationery Room 1 Serenity. Here is what works, what to consider, and whether the $115 asking price holds up.

Fountain pen with teal and gold translucent resin and a key-shaped clip on a concrete surface

Introduction

Dominant Industry built its reputation in South Korea on small-batch fountain pen inks with strong visual character, and the Kiyon Stationery Room 1 Serenity marks the company’s first step into making the pens themselves. The concept is a themed series inspired by an imaginary hotel: each pen is a room key with its own number, and each release is framed as a stay in a secluded mountain retreat. It sounds like a lot of marketing storytelling, but the execution on the pen itself is genuinely thoughtful.

This is a cartridge converter pen with a stainless steel nib, an ebonite feed, and a resin body that leans hard into the key-and-keyhole theme. At around $115 depending on conversion rates, it sits at a price point that makes the quality-to-theme ratio worth a close look.

Unboxing and Presentation

The packaging does most of the storytelling before you even reach the pen. The outer box carries the Kiyon Stationery name and a small keyhole graphic, and inside sits a second box with a metal lid, styled almost like a small chest you unlock with a key printed on the back.

Two extras stand out. The first is an illustrated collector’s card, a nice touch for anyone who keeps packaging. The second is a matching metal keyring engraved with the room name and number 0001, which is a genuinely different inclusion for a pen at this price. The wave graphic on the box side represents the delta wave, the brain wave associated with deep, restorative sleep, and it appears on every box in the series rather than changing per pen.

Design Details and Theme

The resin is described as ice crystal resin, with teal blue tones, milky translucent effects, and warm orange gold accents. In person it reads a little like crushed ice, and the overall look is reminiscent of a classic Pelikan with white caps, gold trim, and a colorful barrel.

The theme runs through every part. The finial is inspired by watch bezels, with rounded grooves around the top echoing the face of a luxury timepiece. The clip band carries small keyholes, and the clip itself is shaped like a key. The cap has dual bands, “Stationery” on the back, and the line name on the front. The barrel runs straight for about an inch before tapering to a bezel-like end with the logo and another keyhole. Even the breather hole on the nib is cut into a keyhole shape, with a key engraved on the nib itself. It is on the verge of being too much theme, but the execution keeps it on the right side of charming.

Nib, Feed, and Build Quality

The stainless steel nib is available in extra fine, fine, and medium. The review unit carries the medium, paired with an ebonite feed that shows off shimmery inks nicely. The cap twists off with less than one full rotation, which makes quick uncapping easy.

The section begins with a slight flare and then angles up before meeting metal threads and a very small step to the barrel. Importantly, the metal threads are neither sharp nor uncomfortable in hand. Where the metal-on-metal contact occurs, an O-ring is included to keep the seal tight, so the cap stays put unless you want it off.

Filling System and Everyday Comfort

This is a standard international cartridge converter pen, and a converter is included in the box. That makes it easy to run on cartridges for convenience or bottled ink for color variety.

Posted, the cap backweights the pen slightly. Not dramatically, but enough that unposted is the more balanced way to use it. Unposted, it is comfortable for longer writing sessions, and the small step between section and barrel stays out of the way.

Writing Performance

The medium stainless steel nib has a hint of feedback. It is not glassy smooth, but it is far from dragging or sharp. Line variation is minimal, ink flow sits on the medium side, and reverse writing produces an extra fine line cleanly. During faster writing the feed keeps up without issue.

Paired with Dominant Industry’s Milky Way Blue, a saturated blue with nice sheen and shimmer, the nib puts down an appealing line that suits the translucent resin. Anyone who already enjoys the company’s inks will find the pairing natural.

Buying Advice

At around $115, the value proposition is strong: well-constructed hardware, a distinctive theme executed with real attention to detail, and a nib that performs solidly. The hotel concept will not appeal to everyone, and if decorative storytelling is not your thing, this is easy to skip. But if you enjoy pens with personality and already have a shelf of Dominant Industry inks, this is a quality offering that justifies its price. With only two rooms released so far, Room 1 Serenity and Room 14 Cherishment, it is also an easy series to start or ignore, depending on how much of the theme you want in your collection.

Conclusion

The Kiyon Stationery Room 1 Serenity is a confident first fountain pen from an ink specialist. The theme is cohesive without being overwhelming, the build is solid, the nib writes with pleasant feedback, and the price is reasonable for what you receive. For themed-pen collectors and fans of the brand’s inks, it is an easy recommendation.
