Delta Rouge Divine Review: A Stylish Return for a Classic Pen Brand

A limited edition piston-filler with a 14k gold stub nib, gold-plated trim, and classic Delta detailing. Here is what works well and what to weigh before buying.

Delta Rouge Divine fountain pen with burgundy and marble-pattern resin barrel and gold trim

Introduction

Delta has been around for quite a while, and after a period when the company went under, it is now being revived under new leadership. The Rouge Divine is one of its limited editions, and it brings back many of the details long-time fans associate with the brand: the little wheel on the clip, the ratchet piston filler, and a well-tuned gold nib.

Priced at 528 euros and 93 cents before taxes, this is not an inexpensive pen. But it is a limited edition of just 50 pieces, and the package includes a gold nib, a piston filler, and a generous presentation box. After spending time with it, we think it is a very nicely made pen and a very pleasant writer. Here is the full breakdown.

What Is in the Box

The presentation is genuinely luxurious. The pen arrives in a cardboard outer sleeve, inside which sits a fancy box that is a little difficult to open with one hand. Inside you get a pen sleeve, a small but attractive Delta booklet printed on very nice laid paper, and a bottle of red ink.

The box contents alone make it feel like a complete package rather than just a pen in a carton. If you are buying this as a gift or as a collector piece, the presentation will not disappoint.

Design and Build Details

The Rouge Divine is made of a burgundy biological material, possibly a cotton resin, combined with a beige-brown resin that looks remarkably like marble. The trim is 24 karat gold plated, and the detailing is where the classic Delta character really shows. There is the beautiful clip with its little wheel, a signature throwback that works well: it is stiff but not too stiff, and it functions nicely.

Our favorite visual detail is the way four gold-plated rings sit with burgundy material in between, giving a very refined, classic look. The burgundy material tops the cap, reappears on the barrel end, and forms the section, which tapers down and flares out slightly. At about the same length as a Metropolitan but noticeably girthier, the size works for a lot of people: a bit bigger and a bit thicker without being excessively huge. It also posts nicely for a pleasant writing experience.

Nib and Filling System

The nib lineup is strong. You can choose extra fine, fine, medium, or broad, plus a 1.1 mm stub, and even flex extra fine or flex fine, all in 14 karat gold. The review unit came with the 1.1 mm stub, which is laser engraved with Delta Italy and marked 14k 585 for the gold content.

The pen uses Delta’s ratchet piston filler. It is a special mechanism that draws ink up well and, thanks to the ratchet design, you cannot really overturn it. It is nicely designed, though you may find yourself double-checking the rotation direction at first. There is also an ink window, which we always appreciate on a piston filler because you can see how much ink is left. One detail to note: the threads are metal on what looks like resin, so it is wise not to unscrew and screw the pen shut repeatedly all day long.

Writing Performance

This is a delicious writer. The 1.1 mm stub in 14 karat gold is smooth, responsive, and delivers really nice line variation. Given how crisp that variation is, we would almost call it an italic nib rather than a stub, since stubs usually have slightly more rounded edges. Writing with light pressure produced a beautiful, crisp line with genuine character.

A couple of notes from testing. With a dry ink on coated paper, there were occasional small skips, but this issue did not occur on non-coated paper. And as with most stubs, fast writing can suffer if you misalign the nib ever so slightly with the paper. Reverse writing, which some enthusiasts enjoy, is usually not very successful with stubs, and this pen is no exception. If you want something that writes much more finely, get the extra fine nib instead. And if you want more line variation through pressure, buy the flex nib; do not press down on this one.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The price is the first consideration. At over 528 euros before taxes, this is a more expensive pen, though limited editions always carry a premium and you get quite a lot in return: a gold nib, a piston filler, a nice presentation box, and a run of only 50 pieces.

There is also one material wish we would add. The feed appears to be a plastic ABS-type material rather than ebonite, and Delta used to offer ebonite feeds on their number eight nibs. Those feeds have wonderful flow characteristics, so seeing an ebonite feed return one day would be interesting. It is a minor point, but worth knowing. Finally, the metal threads on resin-like material deserve gentle handling, and the ratchet piston rotation may take a moment of habit.

Buying Advice

This pen suits a buyer who wants a classic, well-made limited edition with real writing character rather than a discreet everyday workhorse. If you love stub or italic line variation, a girthier balanced size, and the piston filler plus ink window combination, this is a very appealing package.

If you prefer very fine everyday writing, choose the extra fine or fine nib from the available lineup rather than the stub. And if price is the deciding factor, remember that the limited edition of 50 pieces, the gold nib, and the full presentation kit are what justify the premium. There is even a 10% discount code available through the retailer for those who use it.

Conclusion

The Delta Rouge Divine is a fantastic writer with a beautifully tuned 14k gold stub nib, a balanced and comfortable size, and a well-executed ratchet piston filler with an ink window. The classic Delta detailing, from the wheeled clip to the gold rings and blind cap, gives it a refined look that feels true to the brand’s heritage. It is expensive, but you get a lot for the money, and it is genuinely good to have Delta back in such a wonderful way.
