A limited edition of 100 units built from custom Jonathan Brooks resin, paired with an exclusive Monteverde Headless Horseman ink. Here is what works and what to check before buying.

Delta Duna Sleepy Hollow fountain pen with swirled orange and black resin and gold trim

Introduction

The Delta Duna Sleepy Hollow is a limited edition fountain pen with a fun backstory. Delta, relaunched in recent years, is known for its iconic black and orange resin color scheme. This model takes that same idea and reinterprets it through custom resin from resin maker Jonathan Brooks, blending three different types of orange and three different types of black. The pen is sold as an exclusive set that also includes an exclusive Monteverde ink called Headless Horseman, leaning fully into the Halloween theme.

This is a limited edition of 100 units, priced at $199 for the pen and ink together. It is available through Pen Chalet. After spending time with it, here is how the parts, features, and writing experience hold up.

What Makes the Sleepy Hollow Different

The resin is the headline feature here. The black areas have a subtle texture with very faint gray coloration hiding inside them, while the orange side is a bit more swirly without being over the top. Compared side by side with the original Delta Dolce Vita, which used a crushed ice resin and a fairly straight black, the Sleepy Hollow keeps the iconic color scheme but gives it a noticeably different interpretation. Notably, the back piece on this model is orange rather than black, which works well in person.

Because each pen uses custom blended resin, the visual character feels more individual than a standard production run, and that is a big part of the appeal at this price.

Design and Build Details

The cap ends in a rounded coned tip and carries a Delta and Italy engraving, along with Sleepy Hollow and the individual limited edition number on the opposite side. The trim is gold colored, and the Delta rolled clip is a wheeled design. Wheeled clips tend to work well across a variety of pocket thicknesses, and this one performs nicely.

The cap profile has some nice shaping to it: the fattest part of the cap angles up, evens out near a gold ring, then angles down slightly before another ring at the start of the barrel. Right there is the ink window, which is generously sized without feeling too large. The barrel angles down at a fairly even rate of decline, a bit sharper than some other pens, and one final ring marks the start of the piston knob. The knob end is slightly more rounded than the cap.

Comfort, Posting, and the Piston Filler

The section is just very slightly concave, starting with a small flare and narrowing to its smallest point before transitioning into resin threads. The step up to the barrel sits far enough back that it does not impede your grip, and the rounded transition with its band minimizes any sharp edge. Even if your grip rests on the resin threads, it does not cause an issue. Overall, this pen is comfortable in the hand.

The pen is plenty long enough to use unposted, but it also posts deeply and securely without adding unwieldy length or back-weighting the pen, so posters and non-posters are both covered.

As a piston filler, the mechanism operates easily and offers a decent ink capacity. One practical tip: when uncapping, it is best to pull the cap off rather than twist it, because twisting a tightly seated cap can engage the piston mechanism and risk expelling ink.

Nib Options and Size Comparisons

Under the cap is a number six stainless steel nib engraved with the Delta logo. It is available in extra fine, fine, medium, broad, a stub, as well as flex fine, so there is a good range of choices depending on your writing style.

In terms of size, the Sleepy Hollow sits comfortably alongside other larger Delta models like the Dolce Vita and Dolce Vita Oversize. Next to non-Delta pens such as a Montegrappa Elmo, an Esterbrook SD, and an Aurora Optima, it holds its own as a full-sized pen without feeling oversized.

Writing Performance and the Headless Horseman Ink

The review unit came fitted with a broad stainless steel nib, and it is very pleasant to write with. It will not give you much line variation, but it is fairly smooth with generous ink flow. Reverse writing is a little sharp, though it lays down a nice fine line. For fast writing, the plastic feed has no trouble keeping up with the nib.

The included Monteverde Headless Horseman ink is a nice reddish brown, sitting on the warmer side of the brown family. Compared to similar shades, Diamine Ancient Copper leans a bit more red, and a copper-toned ink with more sheen also reads redder. The bottle itself has attractive Halloween and fall themed artwork featuring the Headless Horseman, and it makes a fitting companion to this special pen.

Buying Advice

At $199 for a limited edition of 100 units with an exclusive ink included, the Sleepy Hollow offers reasonable value for what you receive. You are getting a custom take on an iconic Delta model, a comfortable full-sized piston filler with a generous ink window, a well-behaved nib available in a wide range of widths including flex, and a themed ink to match. If you like Delta’s design language and want a version of it with a unique resin twist, this is an easy set to recommend. Just be aware that limited availability means it may not be around for long.

Conclusion

The Delta Duna Sleepy Hollow is a well-executed limited edition that reimagines one of Delta’s most recognizable color schemes through custom Jonathan Brooks resin. Comfortable in the hand, secure when posted, and backed by a smooth broad nib and an exclusive themed ink, it makes a strong case for itself at $199. For fans of Delta pens or anyone drawn to the Halloween theme, it is a charming and practical addition to a collection.
