Craft Storage
CreateRoom DreamBox Review: Is This Craft Storage Cabinet Worth It?
A hands-on look at the DreamBox craft storage cabinet, including assembly, organization options, and honest pros and cons.
Introduction
The DreamBox is a space-saving storage cabinet that folds open multiple times to reveal compartments for art and craft supplies. It has been heavily advertised to artists and crafters for years, and the pitch is simple: everything you own, organized in one piece of furniture that takes up far less room than scattered drawers, boxes, and closets.
This review is based on a fully stocked, real-world test. Every art supply in the house was pulled out of drawers, closets, and even garage boxes and organized into the DreamBox. Here is what stood out after two days of filling it, plus an honest assessment of whether it is worth the money.
Assembly: Easier Than It Looks, If You Pick the Right Version
The pre-built version arrived mostly assembled. Attaching the two doors, the feet, the handles, and the crown with the light took roughly an hour, and it does require two people. It is essentially impossible to do alone.
The pre-built version is a roughly $600 add-on. The non-assembled version ships as individual panels that have to be nailed and screwed together by hand, which would reasonably take much longer. If you have patience or someone willing to handle the build for you, skipping the pre-built upgrade is a legitimate way to save money.

Customization: Shelves, Totes, and a Lot of Options
The DreamBox is fully customizable. You can choose between acrylic container styles and sizes depending on what you need to store. The tested unit was configured with an 80-tote setup on one side, using every available small acrylic container, and a 40-tote configuration on the other side that leaves more room for larger products.
Installation of the rails is simple: plastic rails pop into pre-drilled holes on each side, and either an acrylic container or a shelf slides straight through. One small frustration: two of the fixed, built-in shelves line up with rail holes, so some shelf positions have to be rearranged to avoid them. It is a minor inconvenience rather than a dealbreaker.

One detail that shows the design was made by a crafter: small flexible plastic rods that you can adjust and move to stop items falling off shelves. Because they are not rigid, oddly shaped objects can simply bend them to fit. A touch-up kit is also included for fixing any scrapes that happen during moving.
Filling It Up: What Fits Inside
This cabinet is bigger than it looks. It held an entire household’s worth of art supplies and still had room left over. Paints by brand, markers, colored pencils, inks, watercolors, gouache, oil paints, sketchbooks, canvases, glue guns, and brushes all found their own compartments, and there was still spare space for future purchases.

Expect the organizing process to take time. Filling the unit took two full days, largely because the number of container options is overwhelming at first and the temptation to micro-organize everything is strong. A useful tip: start with a rough arrangement, use the largest containers to test what fits, then refine. You can always change the configuration later, and most people will.
Space and Flexibility in Small Homes
The unit sits on wheels, so it moves easily even when fully loaded without toppling or shifting the contents inside. When closed, it sticks out quite far from the wall, so you need a wall wide enough to open it fully. The table clips up out of the way when not in use, and the company offers an extended table version as an add-on if you want a larger work surface.
For people without dedicated craft rooms, the folded cabinet fits in a corner and opens out only when needed. That is the core appeal: all supplies in one organized spot, freeing up closet space that was previously unusable.

Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Holds an enormous amount of supplies with room to spare
- The pre-built version assembles in about an hour with two people
- Extremely well thought out details, like the flexible safety rods and the metal rungs for holding washi tape
- Includes a touch-up kit for minor damage
- Wheels make it easy to reposition even when loaded
- Made in the USA by an American-owned company, with build quality noticeably better than flat-pack furniture at a similar weight class
- Three color options, and you can skip the crown to lower the price
- Monthly payment plans are available
Cons:
- The pre-built upgrade costs around $600
- Base price is out of budget for many buyers; this is a luxury item
- Two fixed shelves block some rail holes, limiting configuration flexibility
- Doors may not magnetize shut if the hinges are not mounted exactly right
Is It Worth It?
Honest answer: it depends entirely on your budget. Seven years ago this would have been out of reach for many buyers, and it will still be for some. It is a higher-end piece of furniture, and part of the price reflects that it is manufactured in the USA rather than overseas.
Two things soften the cost. First, buying equivalent acrylic containers separately would easily run a few hundred dollars on its own. Second, compared with what furniture from mainstream home retailers costs, the price sits in a reasonable range for the quality. If you have a large collection of supplies and limited space, it genuinely solves a problem that cheap organizers do not. If your supply collection is modest, a drawer may still be all you need.
Conclusion
The DreamBox does what it promises. It turned two cluttered closets, several drawers, and two garage boxes of scattered art supplies into a single organized, mobile, and surprisingly beautiful piece of furniture. The build quality is a clear step above typical flat-pack furniture, the details show genuine understanding of how crafters work, and the space savings are real. The price is the only serious barrier, and for many buyers it will be a considered purchase rather than an impulse one. For artists and crafters with substantial collections and a real storage problem, it is hard to beat.
