Craft CTM Ultra Carbon 2 Review: A Hybrid Trail and Road Racing Shoe

A lightweight carbon-plated hybrid that handles road miles and trail racing without compromising either.

Introduction

The Craft CTM Ultra Carbon 2 occupies a space few shoes attempt: a genuine performance hybrid that works as a trail racing shoe while still handling road miles comfortably. At 9.3 ounces for a men’s size nine, it is light for a trail shoe and about average for the road, and it manages to blend the two demands better than most dedicated shoes manage either one.

Who This Shoe Is For

This is a trail racing shoe first, especially over longer distances, but its real appeal is the hybrid concept. Most runners do not live next to a trailhead. If you have to run a mile and a half of pavement before you hit dirt, a shoe that optimizes performance on both surfaces without being too aggressive for either one is exactly what you want.

Outsole and Versatility

The outsole carries lugs for trail grip, but they are not so aggressive that the shoe cannot handle pavement. Half of the 100 test miles were on road and the outsole shows no significant wear, while the other half on trail proved it grips well on both surfaces.

On the Road

A full-length carbon fiber plate sits inside an EVA-based midsole, which gives the ride a slightly firmer feel on pavement. It still works fine for daily training and even a bit of up-tempo work, and the rockered geometry keeps the plate from feeling overly stiff underfoot.

On the Trail

Once you leave the pavement, the ride changes character. Things tend to pop a little more, which makes the shoe lively on dirt. It has handled trail workouts well, including uphill tempo runs and hill repeats, where the plate and rockered shape feel genuinely helpful.

Upper Fit and Comfort

The upper fits a little wider with more volume than typical race shoes, and it is very flexible, so you will want to lock the lacing down properly. The extra room pays off over longer efforts when your feet start to swell. It is also very airy, drains well, and has performed admirably in rain, which is not a given for a shoe this breathable.

Things to Consider Before Buying

The 10-millimeter drop is increasingly rare in trail shoes, so runners who need that geometry will appreciate it, and it felt comfortable over long trail runs for a tester with tight calves. The firmer road feel and the roomy, flexible upper are worth checking against your own preferences before committing.

Buying Advice

If your runs regularly mix road and trail, this shoe makes a strong case as a single-shoe solution. If you race long trail events and need to run or drive on pavement to get there, the CTM Ultra Carbon 2 removes the compromise. If you want maximum aggression on technical terrain or maximum cushion for pure road work, a dedicated shoe in those categories will still serve you better.

Conclusion

The Craft CTM Ultra Carbon 2 is a well-executed hybrid: light enough to race in on trails, durable enough to handle serious road mileage, and comfortable enough for long days out. For runners whose routes span both surfaces, it is an easy recommendation.
